"The Mafia Boss Saw the Bruises I Hid." Chapter 7
The Woman He Saw
For two days, Damen was present in every practical way and absent in the ways Hannah had begun to rely on.
He asked about her shoulder. He remembered that she needed a ride earlier on Thursday. When she came into the study, he put down his phone and gave her his attention, but something remained behind his eyes that he would not bring into the room.
She knew what withheld thoughts looked like. She had spent too long mistaking them for things she could fix by becoming easier to live with.
On Friday evening, she opened her mother's box again.
Beneath a packet of photographs lay an envelope marked with Sophia's name. Inside was an address written on a torn sheet of clinic stationery. The old photograph had been stored with it; on the back, in different ink from her mother's caption, someone had written four words.
He must never know.
Hannah checked the date on the folded note. Nine years ago, not twenty-eight. Her mother had written beneath the address: S. arrived Tuesday. No visitors. Call D. if she asks.
She sat on the bed, holding the paper while pieces moved without settling. Then she took everything downstairs.
Damen looked up from his desk. The change in his face when he saw the envelope told her he understood more than she did.
"I found this," she said. "I need you to tell me what you know."
He stood. "Come and sit down."
"I would rather you answered first."
He stopped beside the desk. "Your mother helped Sophia shortly before she died. We have confirmed a call made from the clinic where Lillian worked. Sophia was there."
"When did you confirm it?"
"Two nights ago."
The answer hurt with an intimacy she had not expected. She had kissed him goodnight on both those nights.
"You said you would tell me."
"I was trying to understand what happened before I frightened you with it."
"You let me sit here wondering whether I had done something wrong."
His expression changed. "Hannah, you did nothing wrong."
"I know that now. I would have liked to know it yesterday."
He came around the desk, then stopped when she took a small step back. The restraint was familiar and suddenly painful. He had been so careful about where he placed his hands, and much less careful about what he withheld.
"Tell me about her," she said.
Damen sat on the edge of the desk, as though standing had become an effort. He told her Sophia had been eleven years older, the person who made sure he ate when their father became absorbed in business, the person who could still make him feel seventeen with a single look.
He told her about the accident, the bruises discovered afterward, the voicemail.
"When I saw your wrist," he said, "I remembered hers."
Hannah looked down at the photograph. The woman in it was smiling at a baby, unaware of everything that would happen afterward.

"Was that why you came to the hospital?"
"It was part of it. I will not lie to you."
She nodded, swallowing against a tight throat. "And the rest?"
"I wanted to know whether you were all right. Then you spoke to me as though I was a man who had brought the wrong breakfast, and I wanted to stay."
She wanted so badly to let that answer be enough.
"Did you have Marco investigate me?"
He did not evade it. "Yes. After the first night."
"Before you asked me to dinner."
"Before you called."
She looked away, remembering how carefully she had explained her budget while he already knew her address, her job, her mother's death. She could understand his reasons and still feel exposed by them.
"How much of my life did you know while I was deciding what to tell you?"
"The basic facts. Cole's business connections. Nothing that gives me the right to claim I knew you."
"But enough to decide what was best for me."
He flinched slightly. She had never seen that before.
The question she dreaded had been gathering beneath everything else. When she finally asked it, her voice was quiet.
"When you look at me, do you see me, or the woman you could not save?"
Damen got to his feet. "I see you. I see the woman who steals my coffee and complains that it tastes burned. I see someone who falls asleep reading and loses her place because she refuses to fold a page. I want you beside me when nothing is wrong. That has nothing to do with Sophia."
Tears filled her eyes. His answer reached her; that made the hurt more difficult rather than less.
"Then you have to let me know you," she said. "You cannot keep standing between me and every difficult thing, including your own thoughts."
"I do not know how to do this well."
"Neither do I. I thought we were learning together."
He looked at the papers in her hand. "What do you need?"
She remembered the hall on her first night, how relieved she had been when he asked that question. Tonight the answer cost more.
"I need to stay with Rebecca for a couple of days. I need to think without worrying that every room belongs to you."
His jaw tightened. She could see how much he disliked it, and for a moment she was afraid he would turn the request into an argument.
Instead, he nodded once. "I will arrange a car. Marco will speak to her about security before you arrive, if she agrees."
"You can ask her."
"I will ask her."
Upstairs, she packed the clothes she had brought and left the book beside his chair. She did not know whether she meant it as a promise or simply could not bear to take everything.
When she came down, he stood beside the door.
"I will bring you what we have tomorrow," he said. "You will hear the whole of it."
She wanted to touch his face. Instead, she held her bag with both hands.
"I am not leaving because I am afraid of you," she said.
"I know."
He looked as though that made it worse.
At Rebecca's apartment, Hannah barely managed to explain before her friend put a mug of tea into her hands and sat beside her. She did not tell Hannah what she ought to do. She simply listened.
Her phone lit up while the tea was cooling.
The message came from Evan, accompanied by a grainy photograph of her mother beside Sophia outside a brick building. Underneath it he had written: Ask Moretti what your mother was hiding. Then ask why he did not tell you.
Hannah stared at it, recognizing exactly what he wanted: a frightened woman, alone with a secret he could offer to explain.
She forwarded it to Damen.
This came from Evan. Bring everything tomorrow. I want to hear the truth with you, not from him.
His reply arrived less than a minute later.
I will be there at ten.
