"The Baby Who Remembered Me" Chapter 5
The Child in the Grave
Evelyn Grant arrived at the independent solicitor's office carrying a canvas bag with one broken handle.
Liana recognized her before she removed her coat.
At the cemetery, Evelyn had stood near the path in an ill-fitting black suit. Liana remembered a handkerchief pressed into her hand and a woman saying she wished she could give her something better than sympathy.
She had thought it was another stranger trying to be kind.
Now she watched that same woman struggle to sit down.
"You knew," Liana said.
Evelyn's eyes went to Noah, asleep in the carrier beside her.
"I suspected before the funeral. I knew more afterward."
Matteo did not sit.
"Start before either of those things."
Evelyn placed a notebook and a sealed envelope on the table. Their solicitor, Rachel Shaw, asked permission to record the conversation. Everyone agreed.
"I was the overnight discharge nurse," Evelyn said. "Your boys were in adjacent rooms. Similar ages, similar admissions. Your son was improving, Ms. Graves. Mr. Varric's son had developed complications."
Matteo rested one hand on the back of an empty chair.
"Mercer told me he was improving too."
"I know."
Evelyn swallowed.
She had gone off duty briefly to deal with an emergency on another floor. When she returned, Nico had died. Mercer was already in the room. The medication chart had been replaced, and another nurse was crying in the supply closet.
"I didn't see the original administration," Evelyn said. "I can't tell you what happened from my own observation. But the chart I had signed before leaving wasn't the chart he put in front of me afterward."
She had asked questions.
Mercer had told her there was a documentation issue and instructed her to prepare a child for discharge to Matteo's household. Nico's agency nurse had been sent home. His father, delayed by weather on a return flight, had been told the baby would be waiting at the estate.
"Why didn't you call me?" Matteo asked.
Evelyn's hands shook.
"I should have."
"That's not an answer."
"He looked different when he came home," Matteo said suddenly.
Evelyn went still.
"I asked Mercer about it. His cheeks, the way he slept. Mercer said illness could change his appearance, and that he'd lost weight."
Liana remembered being told the same thing about a dead child.
Matteo stared at the table.
"I believed him because I needed to believe my son was better."
"He relied on that," Rachel said quietly.
Evelyn twisted the broken handle of her bag.
"He told me the wrong medication had been given under my login. He said I would be blamed, and that nobody would believe I hadn't administered it. I had left the workstation unlocked. I thought I could lose everything."
Matteo's knuckles whitened against the chair.
"So you let someone else lose his child."
Evelyn bowed her head.
Rachel waited until she could continue.

At the end of the shift, Evelyn had been handed paperwork stating Noah Graves had died. She had signed the nursing portion of the post-death record. The physician's certification was Mercer's. Later, when Mercer claimed she had witnessed the child's final deterioration, she understood how her signature would be used.
"I did not see Noah die," she said. "I saw him awake that evening. I saw him leave in the transport carrier."
Liana felt her stomach turn.
"You watched them take him away."
Evelyn nodded.
"He was crying for you."
Liana pushed back her chair.
Matteo caught its edge before it hit the wall.
She walked to the window, fighting the urge to make a sound she would never be able to stop.
Twenty-five days.
He had been alive for every one of them.
Someone had known.
Behind her, Evelyn began crying.
"Please stop," Liana said without turning. "I can't comfort you."
The crying quieted.
Evelyn explained the pendant. It had been separated from Noah's belongings before the funeral. She had taken it while searching for anything that connected the living child to his mother.
She had entered the estate using an old agency contact's identity. She had thought she could take a photograph, find Matteo alone, say something. Instead, fear and shame had followed her into the nursery. When she heard security approaching, she hid the star where routine cleaning might eventually uncover it.
"You left a necklace where someone might find it," Liana said. "Then you let me go home to an empty crib."
"Yes."
"Don't tell me you were protecting me."
"I wasn't. I was protecting myself."
For the first time, Liana believed every word she said.
Evelyn had contacted Mrs. Bell after learning the estate needed household staff. She had known Liana needed work through the hospital bereavement office. The referral had been another cowardly attempt to bring the truth within reach without speaking it herself.
"I kept thinking if you saw him, you'd know," she said.
"I thought I was losing my mind."
Evelyn closed her eyes.
Rachel asked about the envelope.
Inside were copies of the original shift notes, a dispatch stub Evelyn had kept, and messages in which Mercer directed her to stop questioning the infant records. They were leads to verify, Rachel cautioned, not a complete explanation by themselves.
Matteo finally sat down.
"And the child Liana buried?"
Evelyn looked at him.
"I believe that was Nico."
His face did not change.
That frightened Liana more than if he had shouted.
"You believe it," he repeated.
"Yes."
"Then we establish it. Properly. I won't bury him on somebody's guess."
Rachel nodded. She would coordinate the necessary steps with the authorities and the families' representatives. The records and the remains would require independent examination.
Matteo listened, asked two precise questions, and thanked her.
In the car afterward, he took a call from Daniel. He sounded like a man discussing a security repair.
Liana sat beside him with Noah against her chest.
At the estate, Matteo helped her out, touched the baby's sock once, then walked toward the garage instead of the house.
She found him there ten minutes later.
He was sitting behind the wheel of a parked car, holding a small blue shoe.
"It was in the diaper bag," he said when she opened the passenger door. "He'd kicked it off before I took him to the hospital."
Liana sat down.
Matteo stared at the shoe.
"I was angry that morning. He wouldn't let me put it back on. I kept checking the time."
His thumb pressed into the sole.
"I thought I'd have another morning."
She had no words that could repair that.
She placed her hand over his.
He held himself rigid for a few seconds. Then his breath broke.
He turned his face away, but there was nowhere in the narrow car to hide.
Liana stayed.
When he finally gripped her hand, it hurt.
She did not move it.
