"The Baby Who Remembered Me" Chapter 7

The Man Who Stayed

For three days, Matteo avoided being alone with Noah.

He did it so carefully Liana could almost pretend not to notice.

He answered calls during bath time. He asked Mrs. Bell to bring the high chair into the kitchen, then left before breakfast. When Noah reached for him, he offered a toy first.

The baby accepted none of these explanations.

On Thursday evening, Liana found Matteo in the library looking at a photograph on his phone.

He locked the screen when she knocked.

"You don't have to hide him from me," she said.

Matteo glanced down at the phone.

"I wasn't trying to."

"I know."

She came farther into the room. Noah was asleep upstairs. Mrs. Bell had promised to call if he woke.

"Was that Nico?"

Matteo nodded.

After a moment, he unlocked the screen again.

The photograph showed a smaller baby lying on Matteo's chest. Both were asleep. Elena's hand appeared at the edge of the picture, one finger touching the baby's bare foot.

Liana sat beside him, leaving space.

"He had her mouth."

"Yes."

Matteo enlarged the image with two fingers.

"I used to think he looked like me because everyone said so. Elena said people were afraid to tell me otherwise."

His mouth moved, almost a smile.

"She wasn't."

They looked at the photograph together.

"I loved the wrong child for three weeks," he said.

Liana turned toward him.

"You loved the child who was there."

"And mine was in a grave with someone else's name."

She could feel the answer he wanted to punish himself with. She had spent twenty-five days doing the same thing.

"I was the one standing at that grave," she said. "I didn't know either."

"You recognized Noah."

"After I held him. After I doubted myself. After the necklace and the records and the test. Please don't turn my happiness into proof that you failed."

He looked at her then.

The silence was less guarded than it had been.

"He reaches for me," Matteo said eventually. "And for a second, before I remember, I think he's mine."

Liana pressed her hands together in her lap.

She could not offer him motherhood as a prize for being kind. She could not promise what her life would become because she was frightened of causing more pain.

But she could tell him what she had seen.

"He doesn't understand the reports. He remembers who walked with him when he couldn't sleep."

Matteo's eyes shone.

"I don't know how to hold him without missing Nico."

"You might miss him while you're holding Noah. I think that can be allowed."

A small sound came from the monitor on the desk.

They both turned.

Noah whimpered again, then began to cry in earnest.

Matteo stood automatically.

This time, he didn't stop himself.

Liana followed him upstairs.

In the nursery, he lifted Noah from the crib. The baby pushed both fists into his shirt and buried his face against his chest.

Matteo closed his eyes.

Liana watched his hand settle, broad and careful, across her son's back.

She had been afraid of how much Noah needed him. Now she could admit that the sight comforted her too.

Later, she found them asleep in the rocking chair.

Matteo's head rested at an awkward angle. Noah lay against him, one damp cheek pressed to his shirt. Liana woke Matteo gently and took the baby while he stood.

"Your neck will hate you tomorrow," she whispered.

"It already does."

She smiled.

He looked at her smile as though he hadn't known it existed.

After Noah was settled, they went downstairs. Matteo made tea badly, forgetting the bags until Liana pointed at them beside the kettle.

"You employ an entire house," she said. "How are you losing an argument with a teapot?"

"I wasn't aware it had become adversarial."

She laughed.

The sound surprised them both.

He gave her the stronger cup by mistake, and she traded without comment. At the kitchen table, he loosened his collar and asked about the yellow blanket she had brought from home.

She told him she had knitted it while pregnant. It was crooked because she had learned from online videos and refused to start over.

"Noah used to get his toe through that hole," she said. "I kept promising to fix it."

"Don't."

She glanced up.

"He'll find another way to torment you. At least you know this one."

She smiled into her cup.

Outside the kitchen windows, rain began falling across the terrace.

There was no file between them. No report. No one asking her to remember the worst night of her life.

Matteo noticed a rough place on her thumb.

"You keep catching that on your sleeve."

She looked down.

"I wash my hands too much."

He brought a small tube from the drawer beside the sink. Mrs. Bell's hand cream, he explained, offered with the solemnity of stolen medicine.

Liana held out her hand for it.

Instead, he paused.

"May I?"

She nodded.

He worked a little cream into the cracked skin with his thumb. It was such an unhurried touch that she felt it everywhere.

Her breathing changed.

His hand became still.

"Liana."

She looked up.

There was no uncertainty about what he wanted. Only about whether he was allowed to want it now.

She moved closer first.

His mouth met hers gently, giving her time to turn away. She didn't.

For a few seconds she was not a bereaved mother, or an employee, or a woman being watched for signs of falling apart. She was herself, wanting someone who was holding her as though that mattered.

When they separated, Matteo rested his forehead against hers.

"I don't want you to feel you owe me this."

"I don't."

He let out a breath.

"And I don't know what happens next," she added.

"Neither do I."

She touched his face, feeling the roughness along his jaw.

"But I wanted that."

This time, when he kissed her, she was already reaching for him.
