"I Took Three Bullets for the Mafia Boss’s Son. He Called Me His Wife." Chapter 4
A WIFE WITH AN EXPIRATION DATE
"Until I can get you out of their sights," Lorenzo answered.
Sarah searched his face for embarrassment. She found exhaustion and a determination that irritated her even more.
"And you decided that while I was sitting right here?"
"Vincent wanted to move you somewhere I couldn't control the security. I needed to end the discussion."
"You could have said no."
"He would have kept pushing the others. A witness staying here can be treated as a problem. My wife is someone he has to acknowledge publicly. It makes touching you more costly. It won't stop a secret attempt."
"So I became your wife to make my murder inconvenient?"
Lorenzo dragged a hand over his face.
"I wish you hadn't understood it that way."
"I wish I'd been included in the decision."
He fell silent. For the first time since the hospital, Sarah thought he did not know how to arrange the situation with an order.
Her shoulder throbbed. She shifted in the chair, trying not to wince.
Lorenzo moved to help.
"Ask first," she said.
He stopped.
"Can I fix the cushion?"
Sarah took a careful breath.
"Yes. The one behind me is folded."
He adjusted it gently. His closeness brought the faint scent of soap and the absurd memory of his hands holding hers in the ballroom. Sarah was annoyed with herself for noticing in the middle of an argument.
"Do you think your uncle is involved?"
Lorenzo rested both hands on the back of the other chair.
"The serpent belongs to a group that fought my family over port business. That party had a staff list. My team checked access. Someone opened a door. Until I know who, I won't hand you over to anyone, including someone with my last name."
Sarah studied his tense jaw. There was a particular pain in saying that aloud.
"What about your son? Did you think about what he heard?"
The question struck him. He glanced toward the door.
"I'll talk to him."
"Don't tell him I'm his mother."
"I wouldn't do that."
"And don't use Toby to make me agree. His treatment, his school, everything we discussed stays in place even if I'm furious with you."
"It stays. Sarah, you can hate me, and I'll still protect your brother."
She lowered her eyes. She did not hate him. That was an irritating part of the problem.
She wanted a list of conditions because lists had always given her the illusion that something remained under control. Lorenzo fetched paper, and the ordinary nature of that gesture disarmed her for a moment.
Sarah required information whenever a threat involved either of the Miller siblings. No one would question Toby without her knowledge. No photographs would be released without a conversation. She would keep her phone, her documents, and access to her own money.
"Did you imagine I'd confiscate your identity?" he asked.

"I didn't imagine you'd announce a marriage. My ability to predict you has suffered."
He accepted the hit with a small nod.
Lorenzo added that the story should stay within family circles for now. If it leaked, they would have to deal with the press. There would be no forged marriage certificate. He had made a claim and would stand behind it in front of his people.
"What about a ring?" Sarah asked, looking at her empty hand.
He took a small box from his pocket.
She stared at him.
"You already had that?"
"My mother keeps some jewelry here. I asked Rosa to find something after I heard Vincent was coming. I hoped I wouldn't need it."
"That is not improving your explanation."
He opened the box. Inside lay a simple ring with a small stone.
An unexpected sadness caught Sarah off guard. When she was younger, she had imagined receiving a ring. Never in a room arranged around her injuries, after surgery, while negotiating her survival.
Lorenzo noticed her expression change.
"You don't have to wear it."
"I need to think."
He closed the box immediately.
Later, Toby came in and pushed the door shut with his foot.
"Do I have to call him my brother-in-law?"
Sarah covered her face with her hand.
"Please don't start."
He sat on the edge of the bed. The humor left his eyes when he saw hers.
"Do you want me here when he's around?"
"He hasn't hurt me. He's just used to being in charge."
"So are you. This should be interesting."
Sarah laughed despite herself. She told him the truth. Toby listened without interrupting, then made her promise not to hide any more messages or threats.
She promised.
Early that evening, Lorenzo returned with Leo. He sat beside his son instead of standing behind him.
"I talked to Leo," he explained.
The boy held his robot in his lap.
"Dad said you're doing a grown-up thing so nobody can send you away."
Sarah chose her words carefully.
"He's trying to keep us safe. I'll be here while I get better."
"Are you going to sleep in his room?"
Toby began coughing in the doorway. Sarah gave him a look that sent him retreating into the hall.
Lorenzo answered before she had to.
"Sarah needs this room because she's hurt. You saw the support for her leg."
Leo nodded. His fingernail worried at the toy's elbow joint.
"When Mom went to the hospital, they said she needed rest. Then she didn't come back."
The room went quiet.
Sarah saw Lorenzo close his hand over his knee. She did not try to answer for him.
"I wish I'd explained it better then," he said, leaning toward his son. "Your mom was very sick. Sarah is recovering from something different. Her doctor is checking on her."
"But she can leave when she's better."
Sarah felt the question reach her before the little boy turned his head.
"Can you tell me first? I don't want to look for you and find the bed empty."
She offered her good hand.
"I'll tell you. I won't disappear without talking to you."
Leo came closer and rested his forehead against her fingers, satisfied with that small promise. To Sarah, it already felt enormous.
Then he asked his father to help him brush his teeth.
Lorenzo lingered by the door.
"Thank you for not promising what he wanted to hear."
"I know what it's like to wait for someone to come back."
He nodded, and she knew he understood.
Alone again, Sarah opened the ring box.
She slipped the ring onto her left hand. It fit a little loosely.
It did not look like a solution. It looked like a question she did not yet know how to answer.
From the hallway came Lorenzo's voice, patient for the first time since her arrival, explaining why toothpaste could not be used as fuel for the robot.
Sarah left the ring on for a few more minutes.
