"I Took Three Bullets for the Mafia Boss’s Son. He Called Me His Wife." Chapter 5
THE FIRST NIGHT HE STAYED
The next morning, Lorenzo saw the ring on her finger and said nothing.
His restraint was so unexpected that Sarah spent breakfast waiting for a remark. He asked about her pain, listened to the answer, and handed her the toast she could not reach.
Leo, however, examined the ring closely.
"That was Grandma's. She used to let me play with the box."
Sarah stopped stirring her tea.
"Do you miss her?"
"She lives far away now. Dad forgets to call."
Lorenzo looked up from his plate.
"I don't forget."
The boy regarded him with the merciless calm of a child.
"She said you do."
Toby lowered his head to hide a smile. Sarah bit the inside of her cheek.
For the first time, the huge table seemed occupied by people instead of positions.
The following days revolved around medication schedules, physical therapy, and the exhausting work of doing small things. Sarah learned that being unable to tie back her hair could ruin an entire morning.
Rosa helped without making her feel helpless. Toby sometimes came in to complain about school and ended up sitting on the floor, describing classmates until his sister fell asleep.
Lorenzo worked in a room nearby. Across the garden, Sarah could hear his voice: few words, long pauses, an authority that did not need volume.
One afternoon she saw him end a call the moment Leo came in.
The boy carried his robot and a box of building blocks.
"Can you build the garage? Rosa made it fall down."
"Not now."
Leo stopped.
Lorenzo looked at his son, then at Sarah, who was pretending to organize a magazine.
"I'll finish this call and meet you in the sitting room. Twenty minutes."
"Clock minutes?"
"Clock minutes."
He arrived in nineteen.
Sarah said nothing, but she remembered.
That night, a scream traveled down the hallway shortly after two.
She woke with her heart pounding. For several seconds she could not tell whether she was back in the ballroom. The bathroom light was on. There was no blood on the sheet.
Another cry came from Leo's room.
Sarah pressed the call button and asked for help getting up. The night attendant wanted to fetch the nurse, but Sarah only needed help into her chair.
By the time she reached the boy's room, Lorenzo was sitting on the bed.
"You're home. Stop screaming, son. Look at me."
Leo struck his father's chest with his palms, sobbing.
"She's still there! You left her on the floor!"
Sarah's stomach clenched.
Lorenzo caught the boy's wrists to stop him from hurting himself. His expression held a desperation he was struggling to conceal.
"Leo, I need you to stop."
"Lorenzo," Sarah called softly.
He saw her in the doorway.
Leo immediately tried to scramble up.
"I'm here," she said. "You can see me from there. You don't have to jump."

His father released his hands. The boy breathed in broken gasps, looking from Sarah to the bed as though he needed to compare the two realities.
She asked the attendant to bring her chair closer.
"Was it a really bad dream?"
Leo nodded.
"The man was coming back. Dad couldn't hear me."
Lorenzo bowed his head.
Sarah laid her right hand on the blanket.
"He can hear you now. You can tell him, too."
It took time. Leo described a door that would not open, people stepping on the robot, blood that would not come off his hands. Lorenzo listened without correcting him.
When the boy asked whether his father had been scared, a long pause followed.
"I thought I'd lost you," Lorenzo answered. "I was more scared than I knew how to show."
Exhausted, Leo leaned into his chest.
Sarah waited until the small breaths grew even. Only then did she realize her own pain had increased. The chair, the effort, and the missed medication were catching up with her.
Lorenzo noticed her fingers gripping the armrest.
"You should have called someone sooner."
"I did. That's how I got here."
He let out a breath that was almost a laugh and settled Leo against his pillow.
Back in Sarah's room, the nurse assessed her pain, gave the prescribed medication, and helped her find a better position. Lorenzo waited in the hallway during her care. Sarah asked him to come in afterward.
"You don't have to stand there like you're waiting to be sentenced."
He pulled up the chair.
"I'm bad at this."
"Sitting?"
"Knowing what to say when my son is frightened."
Sarah looked at the ceiling.
"I didn't know what to say to Toby when our mother died. Sometimes I talked about school so he wouldn't ask about her."
Lorenzo rubbed his hands together slowly.
"After Elena died, I started checking everything. The car, the food, everyone who came inside. He went quiet, and I thought that was better than watching him cry."
"His silence wasn't supposed to make things easier for you."
Sarah regretted her tone when she saw his face. But he nodded.
"I understand that now."
The pain came in waves. She tried to follow the conversation so she would not have to concentrate on it, until she lost track of a sentence halfway through.
"You don't have to keep talking," he said.
"I'm afraid I'll fall asleep and wake up there."
It was the first time she had admitted it.
Lorenzo moved the chair closer without touching her bandages.
"Would another light help?"
She nodded.
He switched on the lamp, placed water within reach of her good hand, and sat down again. He did not promise that nothing would happen. He did not tell her to calm down.
Sarah watched his shirt tighten across his forearm. A dark mark showed near his wrist, perhaps a tattoo hidden by his cuff. In another life she would have thought him handsome and crossed the street to avoid him.
Now she did not want him to leave.
"Can you stay until the medicine works?"
He rested his elbow on the chair.
"Of course."
She reached out. He took her hand, careful of the IV.
"I got scared afterward," she confessed. "On the floor, when I'd already done it. I thought about Toby, and I was angry with myself."
"You don't owe anyone an apology for wanting to stay alive."
Tears slid into her hair. She could not wipe them away without letting go of his hand.
Lorenzo picked up a tissue and waited for her permission before touching her face.
When the pain finally eased, Sarah closed her eyes. She could still feel him beside the bed, the warmth of his fingers around hers.
She woke near six.
Lorenzo was asleep at an awkward angle in the chair, his head against the wall, one hand still within reach.
Sarah watched him for a while.
Then she drew the edge of her blanket over his arm.
