"I Took Three Bullets for the Mafia Boss’s Son. He Called Me His Wife." Chapter 6
THE VOICE INSIDE THE ROBOT
Lorenzo opened his eyes when Sarah reached for the water.
He stood so quickly that he hit his knee on the table. The glass trembled. She caught it and began to laugh.
"You don't have to fight the furniture. I was thirsty."
Still half asleep, he rubbed his knee.
"That chair was a mistake."
"You could have gone to bed."
His gaze moved to her hand, resting on the blanket she had pulled over his arm.
"I didn't want to."
Sarah stopped laughing.
Before she could answer, Rosa knocked with breakfast. They drew apart like teenagers caught doing something forbidden. The housekeeper was kind enough not to smile.
Over the next few days, Sarah began looking for Lorenzo without meaning to. She recognized his footsteps. She saved something funny Leo had said to tell him later. When he was late for dinner, she watched the door.
It unsettled her.
The ring had started as a performance. The relief of seeing him come home was not part of their arrangement.
Toby noticed first.
"You brushed your hair before coming downstairs."
"People brush their hair."
"You complained when I brought the wrong brush."
She told him to go study. He left grinning.
By then she could walk short distances with the support her therapist recommended. One rainy afternoon, she settled by the sitting-room window while Leo spread his blocks across a low table.
The robot tipped over. He picked it up, pressed a button on its back, and waited.
Nothing happened.
"He never talks anymore," the boy murmured.
Sarah closed her book.
"Did he talk before?"
"He had Uncle Matteo's voice. There was a message for me."
The name brought back a photograph in the hall: Lorenzo beside a man who resembled him, both younger, laughing at something beyond the camera.
Leo kept pressing the button.
"Dad changed the batteries once. I didn't ask him again."
"Why not?"
He glanced toward the office door.
"He gets sad when I talk about my uncle."
Sarah felt an ache that had nothing to do with her stitches.
She asked Rosa for a small screwdriver, but she did not open the toy immediately. Instead, she called Lorenzo. He arrived holding his phone.
"Leo wants to hear a recording. Could you look at this with us?"
He saw the robot and hesitated.
Then he put the phone away.
They sat at the table. Lorenzo opened the compartment and removed the batteries. Sarah noticed a loose strip of plastic underneath, different from the rest of the casing.
"Did it come like that?"
Lorenzo touched the edge with the screwdriver. The false bottom lifted slightly, exposing a tiny object wrapped in tape.
He went still.
"Did you break him worse, Dad?" Leo asked.
"No. I found something."
Lorenzo called Bruno. He asked Rosa to take Leo to choose a snack, but the boy clutched the robot against his chest.

"Are you taking him away?"
Sarah saw impatience gather in his father's face and touched Lorenzo's wrist.
He took a breath before answering.
"I need to look at this little piece. The robot is still yours. Nobody is throwing him away."
Bruno photographed the compartment and secured the memory card hidden inside. The work took only a few moments. The expressions on the men's faces lasted longer.
Sarah understood that the discovery mattered before she understood why.
Leo agreed to leave after his father replaced the batteries and promised to try the button again. The little speaker crackled.
Then a man's voice filled the room.
"If you're hearing this, Captain Leo, your mission is to eat dinner before dessert. Your dad always tried to get out of that part when he was little."
The boy laughed.
The recording continued, a breath between the sentences.
"Take good care of our robot. When I get back, we'll finish the spaceship. I miss you, buddy."
The silence afterward was unbearable.
Leo pressed the button again.
Lorenzo stood before the voice returned. Sarah saw him brace a hand against the doorway. Bruno remained beside the table, uncertain whether to follow.
"I'll stay with him," Sarah said, indicating the boy.
Lorenzo nodded without turning around.
Later, after Leo tired of listening and went upstairs for his bath, Sarah found his father on the covered terrace.
He held the photograph of himself and his brother.
"May I sit?"
Lorenzo pulled out a chair and put a cushion on the seat. Even now, he had remembered.
Rain whispered through the garden.
"Matteo died four months ago," he said. "They called it a car accident. I didn't believe that, but I could never put all the pieces together."
Sarah did not question him immediately. She waited.
"He'd been reviewing records from a warehouse. He said he'd found something wrong. I was away. I told him to wait until I got back."
His thumb moved over the frame.
"He called that night. I was in a meeting. I didn't answer."
Sarah knew the cruelty of those memories. Her mother's last call. The loaf of bread her father had asked her to buy before he failed to come home.
"You think you could have stopped it."
"I should have listened."
She rested her hand over his. She did not try to pull the guilt out of him with a sentence. Lorenzo closed his fingers around hers and watched the rain.
When he finally spoke again, his voice was lower.
"The man I am put my brother near things that never should have reached him. Now they've reached my son. And you."
"I went into that ballroom to work. You don't have to pretend this was fate."
He looked up.
"I'm not trying to make it beautiful."
"I know. I just want you to keep telling me the truth, even when it's ugly."
He nodded.
That evening, Bruno called them into the office. A specialist had accessed the card without putting it into a household computer. It contained Matteo's documents, message copies, and payment records. The material pointed toward leaks inside the Caruso organization and contact with the group that used the serpent.
Sarah sat near the door. She would not have known how to distinguish evidence from an ordinary spreadsheet and did not pretend otherwise.
One message Matteo had obtained said he had left a warehouse carrying an object intended for his nephew. It did not identify the contents. Bruno explained that someone might have connected the secret with the gift without knowing exactly where to look.
"That's why Vincent asked about the toy," Sarah remembered.
Lorenzo looked up.
"I heard him, too. But I need more than a question to know whether he was worried or checking what was left."
Sarah understood his expression when he opened a photograph attached to another message.
It showed Leo leaving school.
Beside it were a time confirmation and details of a reserved service entrance at the Halston Hotel. The sender was not identified by name.
Bruno enlarged the preceding message. It referred to a family conversation about Leo, held over Sunday dinner.
Lorenzo slowly leaned back in his chair.
Sarah remembered Vincent's warm smile and the ease with which he had kissed the boy's forehead.
She did not announce that she had found the guilty man. She did not know that.
Instead, she touched the ring and felt the cold metal beneath her thumb.
Someone who ate at their table had helped point a gun at Leo.
