"I Took Three Bullets for the Mafia Boss’s Son. He Called Me His Wife." Chapter 10
THE MAN ACROSS THE TABLE
Leo arrived at the smaller house on the morning of the meeting with a backpack that looked too large for his shoulders.
It contained pajamas, two shirts, the robot, and a framed photograph of his mother.
Sarah lifted the frame carefully. Leo watched her.
"I always bring it when I sleep somewhere else."
"Where would you like to put it?"
He chose the bedside table. Sarah moved the lamp to make room.
Lorenzo watched from the doorway. When his son went to find Toby, he approached the photograph. Elena was smiling on a beach, holding Leo as a baby.
"He has her smile," Sarah said.
Lorenzo nodded.
"I spent so much time being afraid of losing what was left that I almost stopped looking at what was still here."
She touched his arm.
"He's letting you get close."
He covered her hand with his. He did not try to turn the moment into a grand farewell. Sarah was grateful, and at the same time wanted to shake him until he admitted that he was as frightened as she was.
In the sitting room, Leo asked his father to come back before bedtime.
"I'll do my best," Lorenzo said. "If I'm late, I'll call. You'll be with Sarah, Toby, and Rosa."
The boy studied him.
"Are you going to fix the fight with Uncle Vincent?"
"I'm going to stop it from hurting our family anymore."
Leo hugged him around the waist.
Sarah turned away to give them a little privacy. Lorenzo sought her out before he left. He stopped in front of her with empty hands, as though he did not quite know what to do with so much fear out in the open.
She caught his lapel.
"Don't give me a beautiful speech. Just come back when you can."
He pressed his mouth to her forehead.
"I'll call as soon as it's over."
The car disappeared beyond the gate.
The following hours consisted of small, unbearably ordinary things. Toby made rice and burned it onto the bottom of the pan. Leo wanted to give the robot a bath. The nurse changed a dressing. Sarah did her exercises, counted repetitions, and lost count.
At four, her phone vibrated.
It was the same number Vincent had used.
Sarah called the guard posted near the sitting room. Following the instructions given after Vincent's first message, she reported the contact. She answered only once the team knew about the call. Rosa took the boys into another room.
"Sarah," Vincent said pleasantly. "I'm here with your husband."
The word sounded different in his mouth.
She glanced at the guard. He nodded while listening to an update through his earpiece.
"I know you had a meeting arranged."
"Then you know we're trying to settle a family matter. Lorenzo has been upset by incomplete documents. People outside the family don't understand how these things work."

In the background, a chair moved.
"Leave her out of this," Lorenzo said clearly.
Vincent continued.
"You seem like a sensible young woman. Your brother has needs. You're facing months of recovery yourself. Think about what happens if the family loses everything because one man can't control his anger."
Sarah went cold. She recognized that tone. Her supervisor used it when he said she could be replaced at any time. This version was simply larger, more expensive, and more dangerous.
"I don't control Lorenzo's decisions," she replied.
"But you can remind him how much he has to lose."
Lorenzo's voice came closer to the phone.
"The files are already out of my hands, Vincent. There isn't an agreement that can undo that."
The silence was brief.
When Vincent spoke again, the pleasantness had vanished.
"You actually did it? You handed over your own name along with mine?"
"I handed over what Matteo found."
There was a flat sound, like a hand striking a table.
"Your brother never knew when to stop."
Sarah gripped the phone until its edge hurt her palm.
Lorenzo took time to answer.
"And that's why you decided he wouldn't come home?"
Vincent laughed without humor.
"You think you built anything by yourself? I kept this family standing while you played businessman. You wanted the contracts, the ships, the speeches. You wanted everyone else to handle the dirt."
"My son was at that table."
Lorenzo's voice was low, almost unrecognizable.
"You needed to understand what was at stake. I sent someone to recover what Matteo left with the boy. You chose to bury everything behind your protection."
"You sent an armed man to retrieve a toy at a party," Lorenzo answered. "He shot to kill. Don't try to call it something else."
Nausea rose in Sarah's throat.
From the other room came Leo's laughter. The sound nearly made her lose her balance.
"He's six," she said.
Vincent seemed to remember the call was still connected.
"You should have kept carrying trays."
The guard beside her lifted a hand, indicating she could end it. Sarah had nothing left to say to that man.
Before she touched the screen, another voice sounded in the background, firm, identifying itself and issuing an instruction. Chairs scraped. Vincent protested.
The call ended.
Sarah stared at the dark screen.
The guard received confirmation that the team responsible was on site. He asked her to remain in the house, as agreed.
She nodded. Her legs were shaking. She sat slowly, before anyone had to help her.
She had not seen a gun that afternoon. Her body seemed convinced she was back on the hotel floor anyway.
Toby appeared in the doorway.
"Do you want me to stay?"
Sarah looked at her brother and, for the first time in a long while, answered without pretending to be fine.
"Yes."
He sat beside her and let her hold his hand.

Lorenzo called seventeen minutes later. Sarah had counted every one.
"I'm all right," he said before anything else.
She closed her eyes.
"I heard what he said."
"I know. I'm sorry he called you."
"You didn't put those words in his mouth."
Lorenzo went quiet. Sarah heard distant voices and a door closing.
He explained what he could. Vincent was in custody. The documents, together with the independent checks, had made intervention possible. The man who had fired at Leo had been located the previous evening, a development they had been unable to disclose before the meeting.
Sarah's throat tightened.
"He's under arrest?"
"He is. You don't have to keep waiting for him to walk into your room."
She began to cry before realizing how long she had needed those words.
Lorenzo waited. When she could breathe again, he explained that there would still be interviews and other proceedings. The businesses would be affected, too. He did not promise a clean world by the following morning.
"You said you handed over your own name," Sarah remembered.
"Some things I controlled won't belong to me anymore. People will want answers. I won't ask you to pretend you don't know that."
She wiped her face.
"Don't hide the price from me just so you can look invincible."
"I won't."
It was dark when he arrived.
Leo ran to him, and Lorenzo lifted him without hesitation. The boy clung to his neck, complaining that he was late. His father accepted the complaint with his face buried in the child's hair.
Sarah waited until Leo went to show Rosa the spaceship he and Toby had finished.
Lorenzo found her by the window. He looked exhausted. She touched his face, searching for an injury that was not there.
He held her hand and kissed her fingers.
"You can end this now," he said. "The marriage story. The house, the name, everything. I'll honor what I owe you without asking you to stay near me."
Sarah looked at the man who had come back.
She did not answer immediately.
This time, he did not try to fill the silence for her.
