"I Took Three Bullets for the Mafia Boss’s Son. He Called Me His Wife." Chapter 11
THE CHOICE TO STAY
"I don't want to decide tonight," Sarah said.
Lorenzo nodded, though she saw the effort it took.
"All right."
"Tonight, I want something to eat. I want to find out whether Leo can sleep without listening for the gate. Tomorrow we can start figuring out the rest."
He rested his forehead against hers.
"I can wait until tomorrow."
Sarah kissed him lightly. The surprise on his face made her smile despite her exhaustion.
"I said I didn't want to decide everything. I didn't say I'd stopped wanting that."
That night, the four of them ate Toby's slightly burned rice. Leo told the spaceship story twice. Lorenzo listened both times.
Then he took his son to bed in the house Sarah had chosen and did not return for almost an hour.
"Is he asleep?" she asked.
"He kept checking whether I was leaving. I stayed until he stopped asking."
Sarah made room beside her on the sofa. Lorenzo sat. She rested her head against his shoulder, and for the first time she did not lie there imagining what might happen after she closed her eyes.
The following weeks brought relief, but they did not erase everything.
A glass breaking in the kitchen still stole Sarah's breath. The night before her first formal interview, she barely slept. Some days, Leo did not want to get into a car. Toby began checking the lock twice.
They sought help and kept the appointments. Lorenzo learned not to dismiss fear he could not fix with another guard.
Sarah continued her recovery. Small victories deserved enormous celebrations: washing her own hair, putting on a shirt without crying in frustration, walking all the way to the end of the garden.
One afternoon, Lorenzo appeared with two cups and waited on a bench without offering his arm before she asked.
She reached him breathless and pleased.
"You look very proud of yourself," he observed.
"I walked all the way here. I'm entitled to be unbearable for half an hour."
"I'll ask Rosa to set a timer."
Sarah stole a sip from his cup to punish him.
News of Vincent filled the screens for several days, then made way for other stories. The case continued long after the headlines. Lorenzo appeared when summoned, answered what he needed to answer, and lost contracts he once would have considered untouchable.
He did not become a simple or harmless man. Sarah still noticed how people measured their words around him. But she no longer had to extract information about her own life from conversations in the hallway.
When a decision affected him and might affect her, he came to tell her.
Sometimes she disagreed. Sometimes he did, too.
Neither of them mistook the end of the immediate danger for the end of every difficulty.
The Halston Hotel addressed its obligations with the assistance of a lawyer Sarah chose herself. She received the payments due to her and decided not to return to carrying trays before she was ready. She did not have to choose an entire future all at once.

Toby went back to school and began complaining about exams with an energy that restored some of his sister's peace. His medical care settled into a steadier routine, with practical help from Lorenzo that did not give him the right to make every decision.
One evening, Toby appeared with an invitation to play basketball on Saturday.
"Will you be okay without me for the afternoon?"
Sarah pretended to consider it.
"I might sit by the door crying until you come back."
He rolled his eyes.
She caught his shirt before he could leave.
"Go. I want to hear whether you actually play as well as you claim."
When the door closed, Sarah watched it with a small smile. Caring for Toby also meant letting him have a life that did not revolve around being afraid to lose her.
That same week, she went back to the apartment.
Lorenzo asked whether she wanted company. Sarah preferred to go with her brother. They opened the windows, threw out what had spoiled, and replaced the kitchen lightbulb.
The place seemed smaller, but it was still theirs.
Toby found a photograph of their parents inside a book. They sat on the floor to look at it. Sarah cried a little and laughed at a memory her brother told incorrectly.
There was no guard inside the living room. There was no ring on her hand.
She could stay there.
That certainty went with her when she left.
Lorenzo was in the main estate's garden with Leo when she returned. By then Sarah had begun spending some nights there again because she wanted to, keeping her own room until she was ready to change that.
The little boy ran toward her and stopped one step away.
"Can I hug you hard yet?"
Sarah opened her arms.
"You can hug me. I'll tell you if it hurts."
He threw himself at her with a care that did not diminish his joy. Lorenzo watched them, and Sarah saw his expression change when she looked up at him.
After dinner, she asked him to join her on the terrace.
She carried the ring box.
Lorenzo recognized it. He did not try to open it.
"I went to the apartment today," she said.
"Toby told me you replaced the lightbulb."
She smiled.
"It was such a little thing. I put it off for weeks because I was tired when I got home. Today I felt like I had to do it before deciding anything."
Sarah placed the box in his hand.
"I want to return this. I didn't like the first time I was given it."
Lorenzo closed his fingers around the box. For a moment, the restrained hurt on his face nearly cost her her courage.
She continued before he could hide it.
"But I like you. I like how you come home and look for Leo before looking at your phone. I like that you learned to let me finish a sentence. I even like you when you're being difficult, although I have no intention of stopping the complaints."

His chest rose on a deep breath.
"I'm counting on the complaints."
Sarah moved closer.
"I don't want to stay to raise your son for you. I want to stay with you both. And when we call ourselves a family, I want it to be because I got to choose, too."
Lorenzo touched her face.
"I love you, Sarah. I should have found a better way to begin, but I don't want to waste the chance to keep going."
She covered his hand with hers.
"I love you, too. That's why leaving hurt so much."
He kissed her with a tenderness that lasted only until she caught his shirt. Then they were laughing, much too close to pretend either of them had any composure left.
Lorenzo put the old box in his pocket.
"I have a question. You don't have to answer just because you came out here tonight."
Sarah tilted her head.
"Can you manage to ask without negotiating?"
He smiled and lowered himself onto one knee.
There was no second box. Only his warm hands holding hers.
"Sarah Miller, will you marry me? For real, with your brother complaining about his suit and my son trying to choose the cake?"
She laughed through tears.
"Yes. But it has to be real chocolate."
Lorenzo pressed his forehead to her hands before standing.
A small voice interrupted the kiss that followed.
"I heard the part about cake."
Toby stood behind Leo in the doorway, making an unsuccessful attempt to look innocent. Rosa appeared a moment later and made no attempt at all to hide her smile.
Sarah opened one arm to the boy. Lorenzo extended the other.
Months later, on a bright morning, the old robot lost its arm again.
Leo examined the piece on the floor, indignant at the repeat failure.
"He's getting really old."
Lorenzo set his coffee on the table and sat on the rug.
"Show me what came loose."
The boy settled beside him. Sarah stood by the window with damp hair and a new wedding ring on her finger. Toby was shouting from the kitchen that someone had eaten the last piece of cake.
Lorenzo looked up at her guiltily.
Sarah did not betray him.
On the rug, father and son worked on the joint. Leo talked quickly, inventing another mission. Lorenzo listened, asked questions, and made room for the small hands trying to help.
When the robot stood whole again, the boy celebrated as though they had saved the world.
Sarah brought her cup over and sat down carefully out of habit, though she did not need quite so much care anymore.
Lorenzo slipped an arm around her waist. Leo put the toy between the three of them.
She rested her head on the shoulder of the man who had once called her his wife before he knew how to love her.
This time, when he kissed her temple, Sarah stayed because she wanted to.
