"Her Family Stole My Father’s Legacy. I Bought Theirs" Chapter 8
No One Would Take the Blame
Adrian brought emails.
Elaine took copies and asked for the underlying messages through his representative. I listened while he explained how a consultant's fee had become a production charge, how Henry had wanted certain expenses kept out of family discussions, how the arrangement had been understood between them.
He used the word understood six times.
"Did you provide the manufacturing services described?" Elaine asked.
He looked at the table.
"Not in those exact terms."
"Then explain the actual terms."
For the next hour, she let him speak without making promises.
When he left, I felt no satisfaction.
Not yet.
The satisfaction came on Wednesday, when the three of them sat together in the conference room and discovered that they would not be allowed to tell three incompatible stories without hearing one another.
Elaine chaired the meeting. Marcus sat beside her. Henry and Adrian had advisers with them. Victoria came alone, carrying a cream handbag that she placed upright on the table like a barrier.
We began with the recent work.
Marcus put the internal production records beside the external invoices.
Helen's team had made the pieces. The supposed outside manufacturing charges remained unsupported. Adrian's emails described the payment arrangement. Henry's replies approved it.
Henry read one exchange and set it down.
"This was presented to me as a standard advisory structure."
Adrian leaned forward.
"You asked me to split the payments."
"I asked for properly documented services."
"You said the family couldn't afford another visible distribution."
Victoria turned toward him.
"What distribution?"
Henry didn't answer her.
"We are not discussing family finances."
"You're discussing company payments," I said. "And you approved these."
His adviser murmured something to him. Henry sat back.
Elaine moved the meeting on before their argument could swallow it.
She explained the decisions already taken by the board: Henry's remaining operational duties were ending, Adrian's contracts were being terminated, and the unsupported transactions would be pursued through the appropriate channels.
The family retained whatever economic interests remained under the acquisition agreement. They did not retain the right to run the house as a private account.
Victoria looked from one man to the other.
"You told me the sale was temporary."
Henry closed his eyes briefly.
"Victoria, please."
"You said it was financing. You said you were still in charge."
For one moment, I saw the child she might once have been, trained to believe her father could decide what was true.
Then she turned to me.
"You should have introduced yourself on Friday."
The room went quiet.
I looked at her.
"Would that have protected Lucy?"
"I wasn't talking about Lucy."
"I am."
Her lips pressed together.
Elaine placed Lucy's written account on the table, along with the records of Victoria's calls after the incident and the earlier employee complaints.
"Your role with the company is ending," she said. "Staff communication will go through management. You are not to contact employees about these matters privately."

Victoria's eyes filled.
She looked at Henry.
He was busy whispering to his adviser.
For the first time, nobody in the room hurried to make her tears useful.
I set my father's sketchbook on the table.
Henry stopped whispering.
"We have also completed the independent archival review," I said.
Elaine distributed Naomi's report.
Nobody had to take my word for it. The drawings, workroom entries, photographs, and correspondence supported one another.
Henry turned several pages too quickly.
"Daniel was a skilled man," he said.
The sentence made something inside me tighten.
"You told him none of his designs had been selected."
I placed a copy of the rejection letter before him.
"This was sent months after the collection was shown."
He stared at the paper.
"The business was in difficulty."
"So was his."
"There were obligations you don't understand."
"I understand that he hired help to finish work you promised to pay for. I understand that you sold it while telling him you hadn't used it."
My voice had risen. I let it.
"He took a job pressing suits after his shop closed. You put his coat in your flagship window."
Henry looked toward the door as though another room might offer a more convenient version of events.
"What do you want?" he asked.
I had imagined that question in angry moments all week. In those versions, my answer had been longer.
Now it was simple.
"His name. On the work. In the archive. In the story this company tells about that collection."
"And compensation?"
"The financial claims are being reviewed separately. You don't get to buy an incorrect history as part of a settlement."
He leaned toward me.
"If you expose this, you diminish the brand. You bought the Delacroix name. Why would you make it worth less?"
I looked at the photograph Naomi had included: a model wearing the coat, Henry smiling beside her, my father's name nowhere.
"Because I didn't buy the right to keep lying about him."
Henry's face hardened.
"You will regret making this personal."
I closed the sketchbook.
"It was personal when you sent that letter to our kitchen. I just wasn't old enough to read it yet."
After the meeting, Victoria caught me in the corridor.
"He lied to me too," she said.
Her mascara had smudged beneath one eye.
"Then you can take that up with him."
"You think I'm the same as him."
"I think you slapped me. You threatened Lucy. Then you tried to make other people repeat a story that excused you. Those were your choices."
She looked away.
I went back to the workroom.
Helen was marking a hem. She stood when she saw my face.
"Are you all right?"
I wanted to say yes. Instead, I sat on an empty stool.
"Could you show me how he finished that collar?"
She put down the chalk.
For the next twenty minutes, she showed me something my father had made beautifully.
It was the first part of the day that didn't feel like a fight.
Before I left, Helen put the sample into my hands.
"Feel underneath the fold."
There was a tiny reinforcement, almost invisible.
"He added that after the first fitting. He said a woman shouldn't have to keep adjusting something she paid that much to wear."
I held it a little longer before giving it back.
