"My Daughter Exposed the Billionaire’s Fake Fiancée" Chapter 1
The Man Across the Table
"You told the doctor to lie about the baby."
My daughter said it with one small finger pointed across Vincent Moretti's conference table.
Twelve adults stopped moving.
Arthur Bellini's fountain pen hovered above a cream-colored document. Beside him, his daughter pressed her hand against her perfectly flat stomach.
Lily held her rabbit beneath one arm and a crumpled sheet of paper in the other. She was four, wearing the blue dress I had ironed before dawn, and standing in the one room I had specifically told her not to enter.
I reached the doorway with a tray of coffee burning my palms.
"Lily, come here."
Arthur smiled. I had seen that smile directed at waiters who brought the wrong wine.
"Your child appears to have quite an imagination, Elena."
Lily looked at me, uncertain now.
"But I heard him, Mommy."
At the head of the table, Vincent Moretti set down his pen.
He did not speak. He did not need to. The lawyer beside him immediately stopped turning pages.
I put the tray on the sideboard before I dropped it.
"I'm sorry she interrupted. Mrs. Russo was watching her, but—"
"Then perhaps Mrs. Russo should have been more attentive," Arthur said. "Take her downstairs. We're discussing something important."
His voice remained pleasant. His eyes did not.
I crossed the room. Lily reached for my skirt, then hesitated, looking at the paper.
"He said the baby paper had to say yes. But the doctor said there wasn't one."
Sophia Bellini's chair scraped backward.
"That is enough."
I knew very little about the agreement on the table. Only that Mr. Moretti was marrying Sophia, that a baby was expected, and that everyone had spent the morning behaving as though a family could be assembled with enough lawyers.
I had worked in his house for eleven months. I cleaned bedrooms and polished things more expensive than my childhood home. My daughter attended preschool three subway stops from our apartment.
That morning, a broken water main had closed the school. Mrs. Russo had told me to bring Lily rather than lose a day's pay.
It had seemed like kindness.
Now I could feel my job disappearing beneath my feet.
Arthur extended his hand.
"Give me that, sweetheart. Someone has frightened you with something you don't understand."
Lily backed into me.
"You were in the blue room. The doctor had the shiny bag."
Arthur stood.
"Elena. Control your daughter."
I put my arm around her.
"She is frightened. Please stop reaching for her."
His smile vanished.
"I have been exceptionally patient with an employee who has allowed her child to wander into private rooms. You should be thanking me."
He stepped around the corner of the table.
Vincent moved first.
His chair pushed back, and suddenly he was between Arthur and Lily.
He wore a black shirt with the sleeves rolled over tattooed forearms. I had seen men twice my size become careful around him. Until that moment, I had never been grateful for it.

"You can speak from there," he told Arthur.
"Vincent, surely you aren't allowing this absurdity to derail—"
"I haven't asked you anything yet."
The room went silent again.
Vincent crouched in front of Lily, keeping enough distance that she did not have to step away.
"Is that the paper you found?"
She nodded.
"May I look at it?"
She glanced up at me.
I wanted to take her into my arms and leave. But Arthur was watching her hand with a concentration that frightened me more than his anger.
"You can show him, sweetheart."
She handed it over.
Vincent unfolded the sheet against the table. His gaze moved down the page, then returned to the top.
"Sophia. This has your name on it."
"There must have been a mistake."
"It is dated six weeks ago."
Dr. Reed shifted in his chair near the windows.
Arthur noticed. So did Vincent.
"The first test was inconclusive," Sophia said.
Vincent turned the paper toward her.
"That isn't what this says."
I could not read it from where I stood. I could see Sophia's face, though. Her lipstick made her look suddenly pale.
"My daughter is carrying your child," Arthur said. "You have the confirmation. The rest can be clarified after we finish."
Vincent closed the folder containing the unsigned agreement.
"We aren't finishing anything."
"You gave your word."
"And you brought a doctor into my home."
Vincent looked directly at Reed.
"Tell me why."
The doctor wet his lips.
"Miss Bellini's medical information is private."
Sophia stared at the table.
"Then she can authorize you to discuss the documents she supplied for this agreement," Vincent said. "Or we can stop here and arrange an independent review. Either way, the pen stays down."
Lily tugged my skirt.
"Am I in trouble?"
I knelt immediately.
"No. You should have stayed with Mrs. Russo, but you aren't in trouble for telling the truth."
"That is a generous assumption," Arthur said.
I rose with Lily against my side.
"She told you what she heard. If she misunderstood, you can explain it without frightening her."
My voice shook. I hated that it shook.
Arthur looked me over, from my cheap shoes to the small bleach mark on my sleeve.
"You would be wise to remember whose house this is."
"It is mine," Vincent said.
Arthur turned.
Vincent did not raise his voice.
"And I've heard enough about her employment."
For the first time, Arthur had nothing ready to say.
Mrs. Russo appeared in the doorway, breathless, with Marco behind her.
"Elena, I'm so sorry. I went to answer the delivery bell, and she was looking for—"
Lily lifted the rabbit.
"Button fell."
Mrs. Russo pressed a hand to her chest.
Vincent looked at his security chief.
"Please take Elena and Lily to the library. Stay outside the door."
My stomach tightened.
"Are we being kept here?"
He turned fully toward me.
"No. You're being given somewhere quiet while I deal with this. You may leave whenever you want."
There was a difference. I had not expected him to understand it.
Lily studied his face.
"Is the library the room with the ladder?"
"Yes."
"Can I climb it?"
"You will have to negotiate that with your mother."
I almost laughed. The feeling vanished when I saw Arthur staring at us.
Vincent saw that too.
"Mrs. Russo, would you bring them something warm?"
"Of course."
"Lily likes hot chocolate," I said before I could stop myself.
"With little marshmallows," Lily added.
Vincent gave her a solemn nod.
"Then it should have little marshmallows."
I took her hand. At the doorway, she looked back once, puzzled by the adults who had become so quiet.
Dr. Reed was already standing, his leather bag clutched against his chest.
"I have patients waiting," he said.
Vincent laid the crumpled report on top of the unsigned agreement.
"Before you go, Doctor, you are going to explain why the test you signed says she was never pregnant."
