"My Daughter Exposed the Billionaire’s Fake Fiancée" Chapter 6
The Woman Who Knew
On Friday morning, Sophia asked to see me.
I nearly refused. The last time a Bellini had wanted a private conversation, I had ended up accused of taking twenty-five thousand dollars.
"Vincent knows I'm here," she said through Mrs. Russo's phone. "He said it was your decision."
I agreed to meet in the conservatory, with Marco outside and the door open.
Sophia wore jeans and an expensive gray sweater. Without the careful clothes and the audience, she looked younger than she had at the meeting.
"Thank you for agreeing," she said.
I sat opposite her.
"What do you want?"
She flinched. I did not soften the question.
"To apologize for what my father did."
"You can apologize for what you did."
Her gaze fell to her hands.
For a moment, I thought she would leave. Then she nodded.
"I knew I wasn't pregnant."
The admission sounded smaller than the damage it had done.
"When did you know?"
"The day of the test. I thought I might be before that. I'd already told my father. He said the timing would save us."
"Save you from what?"
"The company is failing. Worse than Vincent knows. My father needed the investment in that agreement."
She looked past me at the wet garden.
"When I told him the test was negative, he said I could keep Vincent interested until the agreement was signed. Then we would explain that I'd lost the baby."
My fingers tightened around the chair arm.
"You were going to let him grieve a child who never existed."
Sophia covered her mouth.
"I know."
"Did you know he bought a crib?"
Her eyes filled immediately.
I had not meant to tell her. The words had come from the part of me that remembered the little yellow hat.
"I wanted him to want me," she whispered.
"Then you knew this wasn't only your father's plan."
She nodded again, crying now.
I let her cry. I did not reach for her hand.
"Why are you telling me instead of Vincent?"
"Because you looked at him as though you could see what I'd done. Everyone else keeps discussing the agreement."
I thought of Vincent standing alone in that nursery.
"He is going to hear the truth from you," I said. "Including what you planned to tell him afterward."
"He'll never forgive me."
"That is something you should have considered before you let him buy things for a baby."
She wiped her face with a tissue.
When she could speak again, she took a folded page from her bag.
"My father sent this to Reed. I found it in an email thread he forwarded by mistake. I gave a copy to the independent lawyer this morning."
I did not touch it.
"What is it?"
"Instructions for the second report. The wording he needed. The date."
"Why show me?"
"Because he said your daughter was confused. She wasn't."

There was no satisfaction in hearing it. Only a cold certainty about how close Lily had come to being silenced by adults who knew she was right.
Vincent heard Sophia's confession that afternoon. At his request and mine, I stayed. The lawyer sat near the door, taking notes with Sophia's agreement.
She told him everything she had told me.
He did not interrupt.
When she described the planned miscarriage, he leaned back slowly. I watched him place both hands flat against his knees.
"Were you going to let me choose a name?" he asked.
Sophia began crying again.
"I don't know."
"You knew when to send the photographs. You knew when to let me speak to your father about the nursery."
"I'm sorry."
"The engagement is over. The agreement will not be revived."
She nodded, tears sliding down her face.
"I'll give them everything I have."
"Do that because it's overdue," he said. "Don't do it expecting me to take you back."
After she left, he remained sitting.
I waited until the lawyer had gone before moving beside him.
"Would you like me to leave?"
He shook his head.
I sat on the arm of the chair. When I put my hand over his, he turned it and held mine tightly.
We stayed like that until his phone buzzed.
The accountant had identified irregular transfers involving an old Moretti family company. The same dormant company named on the forged authorization Daniel had brought in.
Vincent asked two questions and listened for a long time.
When he ended the call, he looked at the framed photograph of his mother.
"Arthur had authority over one of her accounts. My father asked him to administer it after she died."
"Did you know?"
"I knew he handled some old family matters. I didn't know that arrangement was still active."
He rubbed a hand across his face.
"The agreement included a settlement of outstanding dealings between the families. Arthur's lawyers wanted those accounts accepted as closed."
"So the investment wasn't the only thing he needed."
"No."
He looked suddenly furious, but this time I knew the anger was not aimed at anyone in the room.
That evening, I put on the green dress I had bought for a wedding two years earlier and never worn again.
Mrs. Russo offered to watch Lily. My daughter inspected me from the sofa.
"You look like your picture."
"What picture?"
"The green triangle."
I decided to accept that as praise.
Vincent waited in the small dining room. There were two places set, no staff hovering, and a bowl of peonies on the table.
He stood when I entered.
For several seconds, he said nothing.
"Please tell me the dress isn't wrinkled," I said.
"The dress is making it difficult to remember what I was going to say."
Heat climbed my neck.
Dinner was unexpectedly easy. We argued about music, discovered a shared dislike of sweet wine, and talked about everything except Arthur Bellini.
Afterward, Vincent walked me to the garden doors.
"I don't want this evening to become something you offered because I had a bad day," he said.
I stepped closer.
"I said yes before today."
His gaze moved to my mouth.
"I remember."
"Then stop looking as though you're waiting for me to take it back."
He touched my cheek. I caught the front of his shirt and rose onto my toes.
His first kiss was careful. Mine was not.
When he drew me closer, the house behind us seemed to disappear.
For once, nothing between us needed a signature.
