"My Sister-in-Law Framed Her Father. I Found the Footage" Chapter 4
The Man Who Helped Her
Daniel called Richard before Vanessa could answer.
He put the phone on speaker and laid it beside the document.
"Richard, did you witness my father sign an authorization naming Vanessa?"
A pause.
"Good morning to you too, Daniel."
"Your name is on the page. Dad says he never signed it."
Richard's voice lost its warmth.
"I think this conversation would be better conducted privately."
Arthur leaned toward the phone.
"You told me yesterday that you hadn't seen these papers. You were lying."
Vanessa reached for the phone. I moved it out of her reach.
"Nobody is leaving this house on the strength of that document," Daniel said. "And nobody is destroying it."
"Be careful about what you're implying," Richard replied.
"I'm not implying anything. I'm telling you what happens next."
Marcy returned from the doorway.
"Our office has canceled the trip," she said. "Mr. Bennett, I'm sorry we disturbed you."
Arthur nodded once.
The transport man opened the front door.
Vanessa took a step after them.
"You can't just abandon this."
Marcy stopped with her hand on the frame.
"Your father has declined transportation. We won't carry him out of his home because you disagree with him."
She gave Arthur a card with the company's number and left.
Vanessa watched the van reverse down the drive.
Richard was still on the speaker.
"I'll come over," he said.
"Not yet," Arthur replied.
"Arthur, this is serious."
"I noticed when your arrangements arrived at my door."
He ended the call.
For several seconds, no one moved.
Then Vanessa turned on me.
"You have no idea what you've done."
I took out my phone.
"I know what you did."
I played the saved clip.
This time I watched her face rather than the screen.
At first she looked irritated. Then her eyes narrowed, searching the image. When her recorded hand struck her cheek, she stopped breathing through her mouth.
Arthur stood beside me.
He didn't flinch when the door hit him on the video.
He flinched when Daniel ran past him.
My husband saw it.
He looked down.
I let the recording continue until Arthur turned toward the stairs. Then I stopped it.
Vanessa folded her arms.
"You filmed a monitor. That isn't the original."
"It shows what happened."
"It shows what you want it to show."
Daniel looked at her.
"Did you hit yourself?"
She said nothing.
"I watched you do it. I'm asking whether you're going to keep lying to my face."
Her eyes filled.
"I was desperate."
Arthur sat down on the bench beneath the staircase.
She moved toward him immediately.
"Daddy, I didn't mean for this to get so far."
He raised his good hand.
She stopped.
"You meant for me to leave," he said. "That much was clear."
"I needed you to listen."
"So you told my son I was dangerous."
Her tears slipped down her cheeks.

"He always listens to you."
Daniel gave a disbelieving laugh.
"He asked me to believe him this morning, and I didn't. You stood right there and let me do that."
"You were supposed to help me."
"Help you do what?"
She pressed both hands to her face.
For once, nobody rushed to comfort her.
I thought the silence might finally make her answer.
Instead, she lowered her hands and looked at Arthur with open hatred.
"Tell him about the harbor property."
Arthur's face changed.
Daniel turned.
"What property?"
"The one Dad sold," Vanessa said. "Ask him where the money went. Ask him how much he knew before he started playing the helpless old man."
"Don't call him that," I said.
"Then stop treating me like I'm the only liar in this house."
Arthur removed his glasses.
"We will discuss the property," he said. "After I've had my wrist examined and spoken to someone who doesn't work for Richard."
Vanessa stared at him.
"You're going outside the family?"
He looked at the phone in my hand.
"You brought strangers here to take me away. I think we're past that objection."
Daniel called an urgent-care clinic. I rang the security company's published office number, using the installation invoice rather than a contact Vanessa offered.
The owner, a man named Paul, listened while I described the remote session. He sounded angry by the time I finished.
"Keep the recorder powered and disconnected from the network," he said. "Don't run any recovery tools. I'll come with a technician."
"Could changing the monitor layout switch off a camera?"
"No. Did someone tell you it could?"
I looked at Vanessa.
She looked away.
"I think someone counted on it."
Paul asked me to preserve the phone clip and the photographs. I sent copies to a second personal account while he was still talking.
The footage had already left the room. Vanessa could no longer make it disappear by taking my phone.
Arthur went upstairs for his coat. Daniel followed, but his father asked for a minute alone.
My husband remained on the bottom step after the bedroom door closed.
"Claire," he said.
I kept photographing the documents.
"I should have listened to you."
"Yes."
He waited for something softer.
I didn't have it ready.
"I thought I was keeping everyone from fighting."
"You weren't neutral. You asked your father to leave and told me to stop asking questions."
His face tightened.
"I know that now."
"I needed you to know it before I could put a video in your hand."
He looked toward the living room, where Vanessa had retreated with her bag.
"I don't know how to fix this."
"Start by not asking us to make you feel better about it."
Arthur came down wearing the brown raincoat Margaret had bought him. Daniel offered to help with the sleeve over his injured wrist.
His father hesitated, then let him.
It was a small permission.
Daniel treated it carefully.
As we reached the door, Vanessa spoke from the living room.
"If you start digging through the accounts, he won't look innocent for long."
Arthur turned back.
His face looked older than it had an hour earlier, but his voice was steady.
"Claire knows you lied about this morning. That's enough for her to help me today."
Vanessa's mouth tightened.
"And tomorrow?"
He gripped the door handle.
"Tomorrow she'll know what I did to keep you from facing what you had done."
