"My Sister-in-Law Framed Her Father. I Found the Footage" Chapter 6
What Margaret Kept
That night, I slept in the guest room.
Daniel stood outside the door holding my phone charger.
"I thought you might need this."
"Thank you."
He handed it to me without trying to come inside.
For six years, we had ended arguments in the same bed. Sometimes nothing was solved; we simply became tired enough to confuse closeness with agreement.
I couldn't do that tonight.
"I'm not leaving you," I said. "I need one night when I don't have to explain why I'm upset."
His face tightened, but he nodded.
"I'll be downstairs if Dad needs anything."
At two in the morning, I heard footsteps in the hall.
I opened my door a little.
Arthur stood outside Daniel's childhood bedroom with a folded blanket. Daniel had fallen asleep in the chair beside the stairs instead.
His father looked at him for a long moment.
Then he laid the blanket over his knees.
I closed the door quietly.
Eleanor arrived at nine with a wheeled case, a paper bag of breakfast rolls, and none of the hesitation people usually brought into a wealthy family's unpleasant business.
She put the bag on the kitchen table and kissed Arthur's uninjured cheek.
"You look tired."
"You look like your sister when you're angry."
"Good. It should save time."
He almost smiled.
She hugged Daniel next. He held on longer than she seemed to expect.
When she turned to me, she took both my hands.
"Thank you for not leaving him alone."
I couldn't answer immediately.
She squeezed once and let go.
The independent attorney joined us an hour later. Her name was Rachel Mercer. She asked Arthur whether he wanted Daniel and me present before opening her notebook.
He said yes.
She listened to the account of the previous morning, looked at the photographed documents, and asked who held the originals. Daniel handed over the envelope.
Rachel didn't declare anyone guilty. She separated urgent questions from the ones that would take work: Arthur's safety, preservation of records, disputed access, and the possibility of forged documents.
She arranged for the relevant institutions to be notified of his concerns and asked an outside accountant to review the company records with proper authorization.
For the first time since the scream, the situation felt less like a room Vanessa could rearrange by crying in it.
Then Eleanor opened her case.
Inside were folders with colored tabs.
Margaret had labeled some herself. Eleanor had added dates to the others.
"Your mother made copies when the Northbridge invoices worried her," she told Daniel. "She wasn't conducting a secret investigation into the entire world. She was trying to find out why her company had paid for work nobody could describe."
That sounded like the Margaret I remembered: direct, practical, and unwilling to accept an impressive explanation instead of an answer.
Eleanor laid out three invoices.
The amounts were different. The descriptions were nearly identical.

Each had been approved through a process Richard helped oversee.
"Arthur reimbursed the company," Eleanor said. "That restored money to the account. It didn't make these real services."
Daniel leaned over the table.
"I never saw these."
"Margaret asked Richard why the work couldn't be verified. He said Vanessa had used informal contacts and the paperwork needed improving."
"That's what he told me yesterday about the authorization," I said. "He wanted a private conversation instead of an answer."
Rachel wrote something down.
Eleanor opened another folder.
"She also found messages about a larger financing arrangement. Northbridge was borrowing against money it expected to receive from Bennett Holdings. Richard was advising both sides."
Arthur stared at the papers.
"He told me he'd cut ties with her company."
"He told Margaret that too."
The table went quiet.
I looked at the new authorization beside the old invoices.
The form Vanessa had brought gave her broad room to act for Arthur. Attached to it was a request concerning his personal investment account and his company interests.
"She wasn't trying to inherit early," I said.
Rachel looked up.
"What do you mean?"
"She needs access while he's alive. She wanted him unable to object while she moved something he wouldn't let her use."
Daniel read the attached request again.
"Collateral," he said. "She wanted permission to pledge assets."
Arthur's eyes lifted slowly.
Vanessa's insistence on signing now made a different kind of sense.
Whatever financial hole she was in, she couldn't fill it with another allowance.
Eleanor removed a small recorder from her bag.
"There's one more thing. Margaret sent me a voice message after your father agreed to make the repayment. I saved it because I was angry with him."
She looked at Arthur before continuing.
"I didn't imagine I'd ever play it like this."
He nodded.
Margaret's voice filled the kitchen.
I had forgotten how warm it was.
"Ellie, don't call Arthur tonight. I know you're furious. So am I. But if you shout at him, he'll spend the whole conversation defending Vanessa, and I need him to start thinking."
A breath. A small cough.
Arthur gripped the edge of the table.
"The money is back. Richard says the matter is closed. It isn't closed for me. Ness knew the invoices weren't real, and Richard knew more than he's admitting. I've asked for the underlying records. If I can't finish this, please don't let them tell you I changed my mind."
The message ended.
No prophecy. No instructions for a future catastrophe.
Just a woman trying to make sure an unfinished question remained a question.
Daniel covered his face.
Arthur looked at the chair Margaret used to occupy.
Eleanor wiped her eyes with the heel of her hand and closed the recorder case.
"She died before she got the records. I asked afterward. Richard said everything had been settled and further questions would upset Arthur."
"I let him say that," Arthur whispered.
Rachel asked permission to copy the message and preserve the original device. Eleanor agreed.
Then Rachel turned to Daniel.
"I need your correspondence with Richard and Vanessa about Northbridge, payment approvals, and the documents you signed at dinner. Complete threads, including anything you would rather not show me."
He stared at the invoices.
I expected him to say yes immediately.
Instead, he looked at me.
"There's an email," he said.
The room seemed to narrow around us.
"What email?" I asked.
He swallowed.
"From our bookkeeper. Last year. She asked why Northbridge was still being paid."
