"I Built My Adoptive Father’s $75 Million Company. He Chose His Real Son" Chapter 4
'm missing."
He looked toward the window, where the company logo reflected faintly in the glass.
"He's a Harper."
I waited.
Dad finally looked back at me. "Don't do this, Lisa."
"I'm a Harper too."
"Nobody said you weren't."
"You just explained why he should replace me, and that's the reason you gave."
Ethan pushed his chair back. "This is ridiculous. You're making it sound like we don't care about you."
"I'm asking why I should lose my position. Neither of you has given me a reason related to the job."
Dad's face flushed. "We took you into our home. We paid for your education. We gave you opportunities most children in your situation never get. Is it really so difficult to do one thing for this family?"
For a moment, I could smell the lemon polish in my childhood hallway. I could feel the weight of a suitcase I had been afraid to unpack.
At eight, I had thought a family was somewhere you could stop being afraid of being sent away.
At thirty-six, I was still being reminded who had let me in.
I put both hands flat on the desk.
"You raised me," I said. "That does not give you the right to give my work to your son."
"He is your brother."
"Then he can speak to me like his sister, instead of ordering my belongings out of my office."
Ethan reached for the resignation. "If you're determined to make this ugly, we'll deal with it at the board meeting."
"That's why it's scheduled."
Dad stood slowly. "I thought better of you."
I felt that sentence land. I let it hurt without reaching for a way to change his mind.
"I'll see you at two," I said.
They left. Paul waited until the door closed.
"Do you need a minute?"
I nodded.
He took his coffee into the outer office and shut the door behind him.
I did not cry. I sat with my hands on the desk until they stopped shaking, then called Claire to confirm the documents were ready.
At two, we gathered in the boardroom. Ruth and Daniel joined by video. Claire sat beside company counsel with the meeting materials open.
Dad took the chair at the head of the table. Ethan sat beside him, although he was attending as a shareholder, not a director.
"I'd like to formalize the transition I announced last night," Dad began. "Ethan will assume the chief executive role, with Lisa assisting during the handover."
"Lisa," Ruth said, "have you agreed to resign?"
"No."
Dad's fingers tapped the table. "We can resolve that as part of today's discussion."
Claire looked at him.
"Before the board considers any appointment, we need to correct the ownership and authority assumptions in the transition materials."
Ethan frowned. "What assumptions?"
Claire connected her laptop to the screen.
I watched Dad recognize the first page before it finished loading.
