"My Stepbrother Hated Me—Until I Stopped Wanting Him" Chapter 8
A House Is Not an Answer
He called before I'd reached the bus stop.
I answered because ignoring him would have made the silence feel too much like a test.
"I'm sorry," he said.
"I know."
"I panicked."
"I noticed."
A bus passed, full enough that I was glad it wasn't mine.
"You shouldn't have had to leave," he said.
I watched a woman across the street rearrange a child's hat.
"I shouldn't have had to wonder whether I was allowed downstairs."
He was silent.
"I'm going back to Ben's," I said. "Please talk to Claire."
"I will."
I wanted to believe those two words without needing to inspect them.
I went back to the apartment and helped Ben finish the shelf. We put it against the wall. It leaned slightly to the left.
"Character," he said.
"Structural despair."
He glanced at me.
"Want to talk?"
"Not yet."
He handed me a book to put on the shelf.
We learned it could support at least one. It was a comforting amount of certainty.
On Monday afternoon, Mom called while I was leaving campus.
"Your stepfather left the folder for tomorrow's donor meeting in his study. Could you take it to the office? You're closer than I am."
I closed my eyes briefly.
"Yes."
"Thank you, sweetheart. And don't let Victor make you wait around. He's hopeless when he's busy."
The house was empty when I collected the folder. Nate had sent a message that morning saying Claire had been exhausted after her flight and wanted to speak properly on Tuesday. He said he'd already told her he couldn't continue with their plans.
I had replied, I hope you were clear.
He hadn't answered that part.
At Astra, the receptionist knew my name. She offered coffee and pointed me toward Victor's office.
He wasn't there.
His assistant accepted the folder, then asked if I could leave a smaller envelope with Nate on my way out.
It was such an ordinary request that refusing would have required an explanation I couldn't give.
I knocked on his door. A voice answered, but a phone rang in the outer office at the same moment, and I couldn't tell which voice I'd heard.
I opened the door a few inches.
Claire was standing very close to him. His hands were on her arms. Her fingers gripped his sleeve.
For one startled second, I couldn't move.
Then she said, "I'm fine. Stupid rug."
He let her go and turned toward me.
"Elliot."
I put the envelope on the nearest chair.
"For you. From your father."
"Wait."
I stepped back into the hall.
He caught up before I reached the elevator. He didn't touch me.
"She tripped. I caught her."
"I heard."
"Then why are you leaving?"
I pressed the elevator button.
"Because I delivered the envelope."
"Look at me."
I did.
He studied my face with a kind of alarm I would once have mistaken for a solution.

"I didn't kiss her."
"I know, Nate. I saw you let go. I'm not going to turn a rug into a conspiracy."
The elevator arrived. Two employees stepped out, greeting him.
He nodded to them. I waited until they were gone.
"What hurts," I said quietly, "is that she can walk into your office and everybody knows where she belongs. Yesterday, I was supposed to stay upstairs."
His face lost color.
"That's what I can't do," I said. "I can't keep being your private exception."
The elevator doors began closing. He put out a hand to hold them.
"Can you give me an hour?"
"For what?"
"I want to show you something."
I should have said no. Instead I looked at the unguarded hope in his face and said, "One hour."
He nodded.
"I'll come downstairs."
I waited in a cafe across the street. I did some reading. I answered Tessa's email. He arrived in fifty minutes, looking as though he'd spent all of them wishing they would go faster.
We drove out of the city without much conversation.
I recognized the road toward the coast. Then he turned down a quieter street and stopped outside a white house with a small garden and crooked steps.
It wasn't a mansion. That surprised me.
"I bought it last year," he said. "Before I moved back permanently. I kept meaning to do something with it."
He opened the gate.
I followed him to the porch.
Inside, there were boxes against the wall and sunlight across bare floorboards. Someone had recently painted the kitchen. A bookshelf stood empty beside a window facing a strip of sea.
"It's lovely," I said.
He watched me look around.
"I thought it could be ours."
The room seemed to go quiet around the word.
Ours.
I had imagined it so often that hearing it made me dizzy.
He opened a door off the living room. A small, bright room overlooked the garden. There was a desk by the window.
"You said you needed somewhere quiet to work. The placement isn't forever, and I thought—"
He stopped.
I was touching the edge of the desk.
"When did you put this here?"
"Friday."
The day before he'd come to the bakery.
I looked at him.
For a moment, I could see it. My books on the shelf. His coat on the hook. Groceries somebody had forgotten to buy. Him saying my name from another room because he expected me to be there.
I wanted it so badly that I had to step away from the desk.
"What happens when my mother asks where I'm living?"
He said nothing.
"What happens when your father wants to come over?"
"We would tell them."
"When?"
He looked toward the window.
There it was again. A beautiful answer with the difficult part left outside.
"I love this house," I said. "I could love living here. That's why I can't let it become another room I have to stay in until someone leaves."
His shoulders lowered.
"That's not what I want."
"Then finish what you started. With Claire. With your father. With me."
For a moment, he stood perfectly still.
Then he took the keys out of his pocket and placed them on the desk.
"You're right."
I was tired of being right. I wanted to be happy. I wanted him to ask me which shelf I wanted for my books.
He came closer, stopping before he reached me.
"I was trying to make something safe," he said. "I can see how it looks."
"It looks like you know exactly what you want when nobody else is watching."
He nodded once, as though the sentence had found something it needed to find.
"Come on," he said gently. "I'll take you back."
He didn't ask me to stay the night. He didn't show me the upstairs rooms.
On the way back to Ben's, my phone buzzed with a message from the research coordinator. I'd been shortlisted for the summer placement.
I read it twice.
"Good news?" Nate asked.
I told him.
His smile was immediate.
"That's wonderful, Elliot."
For once, he didn't ask where it would take me.
He just looked proud.
When he dropped me off, I kept my hand on the door handle for a moment.
"I didn't stop wanting you," I said.
He looked at me.
"I stopped thinking wanting you was enough reason to accept anything."
His fingers tightened around the steering wheel.
"I understand."
I hoped, at last, that he did.
