"The Mafia Boss Could Buy Anything—Except My Trust." Chapter 10
What He Could Not Command
Their first date was windy and cold.
Tessa's scarf blew into his face twice. The paper around the fish grew transparent with grease. A gull stole a potato from her hand, and she called it something that made Damian laugh so hard he had to sit down.
"You're taking that bird's side," she accused.
"It showed initiative."
"You would respect that."
He held her hand while they walked back from the ferry terminal. She took off her glove so their fingers could touch.
In December, she began visiting the house again.
The first time, she arrived with a book and a bakery bag. Mrs. Alvarez greeted her at the front door. Damian stood on the landing, trying not to make his relief visible to the whole household.
His mother did not recognize her.
Tessa's smile faltered. Damian saw it before she sat down.
"I've brought something ridiculous to read," she said. "There's a rich man in it who thinks everyone should listen to him."
Beatrice looked at Damian.
"How tiresome."
Tessa laughed, and after a moment so did he.
Later, in the corridor, she leaned against him with her eyes shut.
"That hurt more than I expected."
He held her carefully.
"It does."
She stayed for dinner because he asked her, and afterward she went home because she had an early shift. The next weekend, she stayed because she wanted to.
He found her in his bedroom looking at the severe furniture and the bare wall opposite the bed.
"Do you actually sleep here?"
"Occasionally."
"It looks like a hotel room someone was afraid to unpack in."
He put his arms around her from behind.
"You could help."
"I've seen what you pay people to decorate. You can't afford my opinions."
He kissed the place beneath her ear. Her head tilted against his shoulder.
"I missed this," she whispered.
"Insulting my bedroom?"
"You."
He turned her in his arms.
There was no camera, no screen, no report that could have told him what to do with the trust in her face. He kissed her until she forgot the wall, and she pulled him toward the bed with both hands.
In the morning she stole his shirt and ate toast while sitting on his kitchen counter.
Rosa took one look at her and put down two mugs without comment.
Damian had to turn away to hide his smile.
He did not become easy overnight.
Once, when Tessa missed a call for forty minutes, he was halfway to asking Paul to locate her before he stopped. She called back from a crowded pharmacy, irritated about a prescription mix-up, and listened while he admitted what he had almost done.
"That sounds like a very stressful forty minutes," she said.
"It was."
"I was buying toothpaste, Damian."
He laughed reluctantly.
She did not always make it easy, either. Sometimes she insisted she was fine until fatigue turned her sharp. Once she snapped at him for offering dinner and called later to explain she had been embarrassed about overdrawing her account.

He learned to ask whether she wanted him to listen or help.
Sometimes she said both.
By February, Beatrice slept more than she stayed awake.
There was no single morning on which the house understood that the time had changed. Small things gathered. An untouched tray. A visit from the physician that lasted longer than usual. Leah no longer suggesting they save a conversation for a better afternoon.
Damian had known his mother was dying in the distant, useless way everyone knew it. Now people were speaking to him about keeping her comfortable, and the future had become a corridor with fewer doors.
He listened. He asked questions. He spoke to the physician again the next day because he needed to hear the same answers in daylight.
Then he called Tessa.
"Is she in pain?" she asked.
"They're managing it. She's mostly asleep."
"What do you need?"
His eyes closed.
The question was so simple that he had no prepared defense against it.
"I wanted you to know," he said. "You don't need to leave work."
"Damian. What do you need?"
He looked at his own hand on the desk, at the faint old scar across his knuckle.
"I'd like you here."
"I'll ask Jo to cover the last hour. I'll come as soon as I can."
She arrived carrying her work bag, still smelling faintly of coffee. He met her in the hall and she put her arms around him before he said a word.
He bent his head into her neck.
For several seconds he could do nothing but breathe.
In the bedroom, his mother's face looked smaller against the pillow. Tessa greeted Leah, pulled up a chair, and took Beatrice's hand without expecting a response.
Damian stayed near the window.
After a while Tessa looked up at him.
"Come sit with us."
He took the other chair.
Outside, the bare branches moved against a pale sky. His mother had once insisted that tree be cut down because it blocked the sea. Then birds had nested there, and she had threatened to dismiss anyone who touched it.
He told Tessa that.
She smiled. "Of course she did."
His mother stirred.
Damian leaned forward immediately.
"Ma?"
Her eyes moved beneath her lids. Her fingers shifted against his.
He waited for recognition with a desperation that made him feel twelve years old.
It did not come.
Tessa's hand rested lightly on his back.
He looked down at the hand he held. His mother had worn rings every day of his childhood. The knuckles were too thin for them now.
"You used to make me practice what to say to visitors," he began.
His voice sounded strange.
"You said I muttered. You said no one would ever listen if I kept my eyes on the floor."
He swallowed.
"You got your wish. Everyone listens."
A breath caught in his chest. He tried to force it down and could not.
Tessa moved closer. She did not finish the thought for him.
"I don't know what to do when you aren't here," he said.
The words came out raw.
He bent over his mother's hand. He had been wounded in rooms with no clean water. He had buried his father before the people who killed him were cold. He had taught his face to reveal nothing because someone was always waiting to use it.
Now he could not stop crying.
Tessa knelt beside his chair and held him. He caught the sleeve of her coat like a child catching someone before they left.
"I'm here," she said.
He let her see all of it.
Later, after Leah checked his mother and dimmed the lights, Tessa went to fetch water. Damian remained beside the bed.
"I'm sorry I stayed away," he whispered. "I was afraid you wouldn't know me. I should have come anyway."
His mother's breathing continued, uneven and quiet.
He pressed his mouth to her fingers.
"I love you, Ma. You don't have to remember anything for that to be true."
When Tessa returned, he held out his hand to her.
She took it and sat beside him.
Near midnight, as the room settled around them, he looked at her tired face and understood how much he had not yet said.
"I love you," he told her.
Her eyes filled.
He waited, his heart beating with a fear that had nothing to do with death.
"I love you, too," she said.
Then she leaned against his shoulder, and they stayed with his mother until morning.
