"The Mafia Boss’s Missing Wife Was Me" Chapter 1
The Word That Stopped Him
The little boy bit the man reaching for him, and every gun in the room seemed to move at once.
"Enough!" his father thundered.
The guards stopped. The boy didn't. He folded himself beneath the restaurant table, pressed his hands over his ears, and screamed until he ran out of air.
Marco caught my wrist before I could leave the service station.
"Clara, don't. That's Rico Moretti."
I knew the name. Everyone in Brooklyn knew the name.
I also knew that the child beneath his table wasn't looking at the armed men. He was staring at the broken plate beside his shoe as though it might get up and hurt him.
"Then Mr. Moretti can tell his people to stop crowding him."
Marco's fingers tightened. "Do you want to lose your job?"
Rent was overdue. My left shoe leaked. There were forty-one dollars in my checking account, and my last decent bra had been drying over the radiator for two days because I couldn't afford another.
I looked at the boy's white knuckles.
"Ask me in five minutes."
I slipped free.
Moretti turned when I approached. He was tall enough that I had to tilt my head, his black shirt open at the throat beneath an expensive coat. A small crescent of blood marked the back of his hand.
"Stay back," he said.
"I will. Could you ask them to do the same?"
His gaze landed on my face.
Something happened to it.
Not softness. Not recognition exactly. His expression emptied, as though someone had struck him hard enough to stop him feeling it.
"Sir?"
The boy knocked his forehead against the table leg.
Moretti looked down. "Leo, stop. You're hurting yourself."
He bent, and Leo scrambled farther away.
"Please don't reach for him again," I said.
The nearest guard shifted. Moretti raised his uninjured hand without looking at him.
"Everybody back."
I crouched near the next table, leaving the boy room to get past me.
"Hi, Leo. My name's Clara. That was a loud crash, wasn't it?"
His breath caught. His eyes stayed on the shards.
Behind me, someone started sweeping.
"Could that wait?" I asked.
The broom stopped.
"Thank you."
I put both hands flat on my knees. There was a tiny burn on my thumb from the coffee machine. Leo looked at it, then at my face.
"Nobody's going to pick you up," I told him. "You can stay there for a minute."
His father made a sound behind his teeth.
I glanced up. "Is he allowed milk? Any allergies?"
"No allergies." Moretti's voice had changed. "He likes it warm."
"Then I can manage that."
I stood slowly. When Leo's breath hitched, I stopped.
"I'm going to the counter. You can see me the whole time."
I warmed a little milk, tested it against my wrist, and poured it into a small handled cup. Marco watched me as though I were carrying a bomb.

"You should have let security handle it."
"They were handling him. That was the problem."
I took the cup back and set it on a low chair near the table. I didn't offer it directly. The boy was working hard enough without having to please a stranger.
"It's there if you want it."
I sat on the floor. My skirt pulled at my knees. Somewhere behind me, an elderly diner quietly set down her fork.
Leo stared at the cup.
Then he looked at his father.
Moretti lowered himself into a chair. It seemed to cost him something to sit still.
"I'm right here, buddy."
The endearment sounded rough, almost unused.
Leo crawled out. He took the milk in both hands and drank a cautious mouthful.
No miracle followed. He was still shaking. A tear slid down his nose, and he wiped it on his sleeve.
I breathed out slowly, watching the brass foot of the table instead of demanding that he watch me.
After a while, he sat beside his cup.
"That was a lot," I said.
He nodded once.
The tiny movement hurt more than the screaming had.
His father leaned forward, then caught himself. He rested his injured hand on his knee.
"You're doing fine, Leo."
The boy picked up the cup again. Milk left a pale line above his lip.
Without thinking, I lifted my hand toward my own mouth to show him. He watched me, rubbed his lip, and then stepped closer.
I stayed still.
He smelled of clean wool and the rain outside. A small scar divided his left eyebrow. His eyes were gray-green, solemn and far too watchful.
He touched my cheek.
Not a quick pat. His fingers spread over my skin, searching.
A strange pressure rose beneath my ribs.
"Hi," I whispered.
His mouth trembled.
"Mom."
A chair scraped violently behind him.
I couldn't look away from the child.
"Oh, sweetheart. My name's Clara."
His face crumpled. He caught my collar in his fist, and I put my arm around him before I could think about it.
The right way to hold him came to me so easily that it frightened me. His weight against my left shoulder. My palm between his shoulder blades. My cheek above his hair.
"I've got you," I murmured.
He began crying then. Quiet, exhausted sobs that shook his whole back.
Moretti stood over us. His eyes moved from my forehead to my jaw, stopping at the thin scar below my right ear.
"What did you say your name was?"
"Clara Vance."
"Who gave you that name?"
I looked up sharply. "My parents, I assume."
He flinched.
It was such an unexpected reaction from a man like him that my anger stumbled.
"You look like someone I lost," he said.
Leo tightened his fist in my collar.
I swallowed. "His mother?"
Moretti nodded.
For the first time I noticed how tired he was. Not ordinary tired. The kind that settled into a person's bones and stopped expecting sleep to fix anything.
"I'm sorry," I said.
He stared at me as if those were the worst words I could have chosen.
"How old are you?"
"Twenty-eight. Why?"
A muscle worked in his jaw.
The boy's sobs faded against my shoulder. I rubbed his back, counting without meaning to. Three slow strokes. A pause. Three more.
Moretti watched my hand.
Then he crouched in front of us, carefully enough not to frighten his son.
"Clara," he said, "I need to ask you something, and I need you to understand that I'm not trying to scare you."
That was a terrible beginning.
"Do you remember your life before eighteen months ago?"
My hand stopped moving.
I had told no one in that restaurant about the accident.
