"The Cartel Boss’s Son Wouldn’t Let Anyone Touch Him—Until He Chose Me" Chapter 2
A Promise Until Morning
The plan began with a kitchen clock and ended with a very ugly drawing.
"That's me," Valeria explained, pointing to the figure she had sketched on the back of an envelope. "Coming through the kitchen door tomorrow."
Mateo studied it suspiciously.
Alejandro stood beside the counter. "It looks like a spider."
"I clean. I never claimed to be an artist."
She realized who she was teasing a second after the words left her mouth. But Alejandro only looked at the picture again.
"A punctual spider, I hope."
"Eight o'clock."
She drew two hands on a circle and showed Mateo the kitchen clock. Socorro wrote a large eight beneath it. The boy took the envelope, folded it badly, and kept it.
He cried when Valeria left. She heard him from the path outside and nearly turned back.
Alejandro was sitting on the kitchen floor beside him when she glanced through the window. He wasn't pulling the envelope away. He wasn't trying to carry him upstairs. He simply stayed close enough to be seen.
Valeria made herself keep walking.
At home, Gabriel took one look at the ice pack beneath her uniform and set down his spoon.
"Please tell me you fought a rich person's dog."
"A four-year-old."
"Did you win?"
"No. He has better connections."
Gabriel's smile disappeared when she described the horse. He was seventeen, tall and too thin, with their mother's stubborn eyebrows. On good days he could make her forget how carefully he paced himself. On bad days she listened for his footsteps between rooms.
"You're not going back."
"I am."
"Val."
"They paid for the doctor. Tomorrow we'll discuss the work."
"That isn't what I meant."
She sat opposite him. Their mother was on the late shift at a packaging warehouse. The small kitchen smelled of rice and the onions Gabriel had burned while pretending he hadn't been cooking.
"He was terrified," she said.
"You can care about him without getting hurt."
"I know. I intend to."
Gabriel looked at her for a while, then pushed the bowl toward her.
"Eat. Apparently you need strength to lose fights."
She caught the worry under his joke and reached across the table. He let her squeeze his hand once before complaining that she was making it emotional.
The next morning her bus stopped behind a broken-down delivery truck.
At seven forty-six, Valeria began sweating. At seven fifty-two, she called the number Socorro had given her. No answer.
She got off and hurried the remaining distance to the estate, one hand pressed to her bruised side. The guards made her wait while they checked her name. By the time the service door opened, it was seven fifty-nine.
Mateo stood in the kitchen in mismatched socks.
He held the envelope in both hands.
Valeria leaned against the doorframe, catching her breath.
"Good morning. The spider has arrived."

The boy crossed the kitchen and took her hand.
Behind the breakfast counter, Alejandro looked at the clock. His coffee sat untouched beside him.
"You ran."
"Your neighborhood is inconveniently large."
"You could have called."
"I tried."
Socorro looked down at the silent phone beside a bowl of fruit.
Alejandro held out his own phone. "Put your number in. I'll send you mine."
Valeria hesitated before taking it. Having his number felt stranger than standing in his kitchen.
Later, while Mateo arranged toy cars beside them in the sitting room, Alejandro laid a written offer on the table.
"I would like you to work with him. During the day. You would no longer be responsible for cleaning."
She read the salary twice.
"Is that monthly?"
"Yes."
"I wanted to check before I embarrassed myself."
"What experience do you have with children?"
"My cousins. Neighbors. My brother, although he would object to being included. No qualifications."
"You were honest about that yesterday."
"I'm being honest again because you look like a man who might forget when he wants something."
His gaze lifted from the contract.
She almost apologized. Instead she kept both hands around her water glass.
"I can't promise to make him better. I can be here, and I can learn what helps. Those are different things."
"I understand."
"Do you?"
Mateo rolled a red car into Alejandro's shoe. Both adults looked down. The boy retrieved it before his father could move.
Alejandro watched him return to his line of vehicles.
"I'm trying to," he said.
They agreed on hours, paid rest for her injury, and a trial period. She would meet the child specialist already involved in Mateo's care rather than replace her. She could go home. Changes to the schedule would be discussed with her.
"And if he hurts you again?" Alejandro asked.
"Then we stop whatever we're doing and make it safe. I won't keep accepting it to prove I care."
He nodded once. "Good."
"I'd also prefer fewer guns in the rooms where he plays."
The words came out less firmly than she intended.
Alejandro glanced toward the guard outside.
"They can remain beyond the family rooms."
It wasn't a transformation of the entire household. She knew that. But when the guard moved away from the open door, Mateo's shoulders lowered.
That afternoon she learned that he liked lining his cars against straight edges. He disliked bananas with brown spots. He kept a stuffed brown dog tucked behind a cushion and checked on it whenever he crossed the room.
"Does he have a name?" she asked.
Mateo held the dog against his chest.
"All right. Private information. I respect that."
He watched her for a moment, then placed one of the cars beside her knee.
At three, the sitting-room door opened.
"There he is. My favorite nephew."
The man in the doorway resembled Alejandro enough that she knew who he was before Socorro said his name. Younger, leaner, with a friendly smile and a bottle-green shirt. He smelled faintly of cedar and something sweet.
"Daniel Ríos," he said. "You must be the miracle worker."
"Valeria. And I'm not."
He laughed. "Modest too. My brother will like that."
Beneath the table, a car struck the floor.
Mateo had disappeared under the low polished wood.
Valeria looked down. He was wedged against the back leg, both hands over his mouth.
Daniel sighed sympathetically.
"Still having a difficult day, little man?"
Valeria moved her chair enough to put herself between them.
She had been with Mateo for seven hours. She couldn't explain every silence or every flinch.
But ten seconds earlier, he had been about to hand her his dog.
