"The Cartel Boss’s Son Wouldn’t Let Anyone Touch Him—Until He Chose Me" Chapter 3
The Man He Hid From
"Give him a minute," Valeria said.
Daniel looked from her to the table.
"Of course. He has always needed time with new people."
"You're his uncle."
"And you're new."
He said it pleasantly. She felt foolish for hearing a warning in it.
Alejandro arrived with a folder tucked under his arm. "I thought you were coming tomorrow."
"My meeting finished early. I wanted to see how he was doing."
Daniel crouched. Mateo pushed farther into the narrow space.
"There's no need to hide from me."
Valeria set a small car on the carpet, well away from Daniel's hand.
"You can stay there," she told Mateo. "I'll be right here."
Alejandro studied his son, the crease between his brows deepening.
"He's tired," Daniel said, straightening. "Don't make an occasion of it."
The brothers went to the study. Socorro followed with coffee.
Only after the sitting-room door closed did Mateo take his hands from his mouth.
Valeria sat on the carpet until he crawled out. He pressed his back to her knee. His shirt was damp with sweat.
"I saw," she said quietly. "You don't have to come out for anyone."
He rubbed his cheek against her sleeve.
She did not ask him what Daniel had done. She didn't know that Daniel had done anything. But she remembered the change in his breathing and told Alejandro about it before leaving.
He listened without interrupting.
"My brother visits irregularly," he said. "Mateo struggles when the routine changes."
"Maybe. I still thought you should know."
"Thank you."
It was a complete answer. It also closed the subject.
Over the next week, Valeria began to understand the shape of the house. The staff moved quietly because Alejandro disliked disruption. Meals appeared without anyone asking whether he was hungry. People accepted instructions even when those instructions contradicted yesterday's.
Mateo lived inside all that careful obedience and could make almost nothing happen except by screaming.
Valeria offered small choices. Blue cup or yellow. Garden or sitting room. Door open or halfway open.
He pointed. Sometimes he changed his mind. Once, after she peeled an orange he had selected, he shoved it off the table.
She stared at the fallen fruit.
"That was my best peeling work."
His eyes flicked up.
"You don't have to eat it. But I'm keeping my orange."
She retrieved it, washed it, and ate a segment. For an instant his mouth twitched.
Alejandro saw from the doorway.
"Was that a smile?" he asked too quickly.
Mateo's expression closed.
Valeria waited until the boy was busy again before saying, "You don't have to catch it every time."
Alejandro's jaw tightened. She thought he might tell her to remember who employed her.
Instead he looked toward the little table.
"I'm afraid I'll miss it."
That evening he put aside his phone and sat on the rug. Mateo's cars formed a long line between the sofa and the window.

Alejandro picked up a blue one.
Mateo snatched it away.
"Right," his father said. "That one is working."
Valeria pretended to read the picture book in her lap.
Five minutes passed. Alejandro remained on the floor, doing nothing useful with his hands. Another five.
Mateo pushed a scratched yellow truck toward his knee.
Alejandro looked at Valeria.
She turned a page with exaggerated concentration.
He pushed the truck along the edge of the rug. Mateo watched. When the truck reached the corner, the boy moved a car out of its way.
Valeria had seen men receive money with less care than Alejandro received that battered toy.
Later, when Mateo was asleep, Alejandro found her by the kitchen sink.
"You were right."
"That sounds important. Could you write it down?"
His laugh was brief and unexpected. It changed his face enough that she looked away.
"About waiting," he said.
"It was hard for you."
"Extremely."
She smiled. He looked at her a moment longer than necessary, then noticed her hand against her ribs.
"Still sore?"
"Only when I laugh. Your sense of humor has been very considerate."
He stepped closer but stopped before touching her.
"Tell me if the work is too much."
"I will."
"I suspect you won't."
"Then perhaps we both have something to practice."
That Friday, her mother took Gabriel to an evening appointment. Valeria agreed to remain until nine so Alejandro could finish a call overseas. Mateo had begun accepting Socorro at bedtime if Valeria explained beforehand. Tonight he wanted the brown dog and the door open.
At eight forty, she went downstairs to get water.
Daniel was in the entrance hall, speaking quietly to a guard.
"Alejandro knows I'm here," he said when she approached. "I left some papers."
She nodded. He lifted his briefcase, went toward the study, and she returned to the kitchen.
When she came upstairs, Mateo's bed was empty.
The dog lay on the pillow.
She checked the bathroom, then the sitting room. A light showed beneath the north-wing door.
A man's low voice traveled down the corridor.
"We have talked about this. There's no reason to upset your father."
Valeria rounded the corner.
Daniel stood beside the open door, holding Mateo's wrist. The boy was leaning backward, heels sliding on the runner.
"Let go of him."
Daniel turned. His smile appeared a moment late.
"He wandered out. I'm putting him back to bed."
"His bedroom is behind me."
The grip on Mateo's wrist shifted.
Valeria crossed the remaining distance. "Mateo, come here."
"Don't interfere," Daniel said, no longer smiling.
Alejandro's voice came from the stairwell.
"What is happening?"
Daniel released the boy at once.
Mateo ran into Valeria so hard she caught herself against the wall. He clutched her skirt with both hands. Alejandro stopped in front of them, his gaze moving from the open door to his brother.
"Daniel. Why are you in that room?"
"He wanted to see his mother's things. I thought—"
Mateo made a small, strangled sound.
Valeria knelt. His fingers caught beneath her chin, forcing her to look at him. His mouth worked once, twice. She felt his terror in the trembling pressure of his hands.
Then he said, clearly enough for all three adults to hear:
"Don't let him take me in there again."
