"The Cartel Boss’s Son Wouldn’t Let Anyone Touch Him—Until He Chose Me" Chapter 4

Behind the Locked Door

Alejandro stepped between his brother and his son.

"Go downstairs, Daniel. Wait in the study."

"You're taking this seriously? He's frightened. He doesn't understand—"

"I understood him."

Daniel's face hardened. Alejandro called for the guard at the stairs without looking away from him. Only when his brother had gone did he turn toward the open room.

Valeria could see an easel beneath a white sheet, shelves of painted bowls, a child's wooden chair. A photograph stood on the desk: a laughing woman holding Mateo on her hip.

Mateo pointed at the chair.

"He said sit."

Alejandro's hand tightened against the doorframe.

"We don't have to go inside," Valeria told the boy.

"Daddy goes away."

"I'm here," Alejandro said.

Mateo shook his head, frustrated now. "If I tell. Daddy goes away too."

Valeria felt the cold spread down her back.

Alejandro lowered himself to the floor. He stayed outside the boy's reach.

"Someone told you that?"

Mateo pressed his face against Valeria's shoulder.

She shook her head slightly at Alejandro. Enough. The child was trembling again.

Alejandro swallowed whatever he had been about to ask.

"I'm staying in this house tonight," he said instead. "No one is taking you into that room."

Mateo peered at him. "Promise?"

It seemed to cost Alejandro something to answer without reaching for more.

"Tonight. I promise."

Valeria carried Mateo to his room. He was heavy, and her side protested, but when she tried putting him down he clung harder. Alejandro brought the dog and sat in the doorway until his son fell asleep.

Only then did Valeria notice that her own hands were shaking.

Socorro appeared with a glass of water.

"I didn't know he was upstairs," she said.

"He had a key."

The older woman looked toward the north corridor.

"It used to be his sister-in-law's studio. He helped clear it after the funeral."

"Mr. Ríos asked why he was in there. Doesn't that mean he wasn't supposed to be?"

Socorro's fingers tightened around the glass.

"I thought all the keys had been returned."

Alejandro rose from the bedroom doorway.

"So did I."

For the first time, Socorro looked old to Valeria. Not dignified or severe. Just tired and frightened.

Alejandro asked her to sit outside Mateo's room while Valeria accompanied him downstairs. He did not order Valeria to explain. He waited until she nodded.

Daniel stood when they entered the study.

"Finally. We need to talk without your staff listening."

"She was there," Alejandro said. "She stays."

"I was trying to help him remember Lucía. You keep that room locked as though she never existed."

Lucía. Valeria had not heard anyone say the name aloud before.

Alejandro remained beside the open study door.

"Why did you tell my son I would disappear if he spoke?"

"I didn't."

"Then what did you tell him?"

"That upsetting you wouldn't bring his mother back. He's confused. He's four."

Valeria heard the quiet scrape of Alejandro's shoe as he moved forward.

"Don't explain his age to me."

Daniel held up both hands. "You're grieving. You're exhausted. This girl gets a few words out of him and suddenly you believe—"

"I saw you pulling him into that room," Valeria said.

"You saw a child resisting bedtime."

"I saw him trying to get away from you."

Daniel looked at her. His expression suggested he had finally decided she was worth remembering.

Alejandro turned to the guard. "Take his house keys. All of them."

"You're making a mistake," Daniel said.

"You won't visit Mateo. You won't call the staff about him. You won't enter this property. If there is an explanation I can accept, my lawyer can bring it to me."

"I'm your brother."

"I know."

The words landed harder than a shout.

Daniel placed his keys on the desk, one at a time. The last had a thin blue ribbon tied through the ring.

Alejandro looked at it, and Valeria watched something in his face shut down.

After Daniel left, he picked up that key.

"Lucía tied that on because she kept losing it among the others."

Valeria said nothing.

"I sealed her studio after the funeral. I told myself it was until I could bear to go through her things."

He closed his hand around the ribbon.

"Two years."

The head of security arrived carrying a tablet. His name was Rafael, a broad man with a scar beside one eyebrow. He spoke in the careful tone everyone used with Alejandro.

Daniel's family access had never been removed. His arrivals did not require Alejandro's personal approval. The hall cameras showed him entering the north corridor on previous visits. Twice, Socorro had been nearby. Once, Mateo had followed behind him with his head lowered.

There were no cameras in the bedrooms or studio.

"He said he was showing him photographs," Rafael explained.

Alejandro set the key on the desk with extraordinary care.

"Send me the dates. Keep the original recordings. Change the access arrangements tonight."

When Rafael left, Valeria realized her nails had marked her palms.

"You believe him?" Alejandro asked.

"Mateo? Yes. I don't know everything he's trying to tell us. But I believe he's afraid of your brother."

"And you think that means more than what we heard tonight."

She looked toward the hall, where Daniel had smiled at her days before.

"I think we should listen without making him tell it all at once."

Alejandro nodded. He appeared to be holding himself together by the force of standing still.

"Will you stay until he wakes? Not because I expect it. I'll pay the additional hours. I'll send someone for anything you need, and take you home whenever you ask."

"I'll call my mother."

"Thank you."

She was at the door when he spoke again.

"You told me something was wrong when Daniel visited."

Valeria turned.

"Yes."

"I should have listened differently."

She could have softened the admission for him. Everyone else in this house would have.

"You can start now," she said.

Upstairs, Mateo slept with one hand open on the sheet. Valeria sat beside him while Alejandro took the chair by the doorway.

At midnight the boy stirred.

"Daddy?"

Alejandro leaned forward, eyes suddenly wet.

"Here."

Mateo looked at him, then at Valeria. His shoulders eased. He went back to sleep without saying another word.

Neither adult moved for a long time.
