"The Cartel Boss’s Son Wouldn’t Let Anyone Touch Him—Until He Chose Me" Chapter 5
The Father Outside the Door
The next morning Mateo threw his breakfast plate.
It broke against the wall, leaving scrambled egg on the wallpaper. Valeria stood still until the last piece stopped moving.
Alejandro reached the kitchen before Socorro had fetched a broom.
"What happened?"
Mateo had climbed beneath the counter.
"The spoon fell," Valeria said. "It startled him."
"He was talking last night."
She knew what he meant. She had secretly hoped it too: that hearing the truth would somehow loosen everything the child had been holding.
Instead Mateo refused the yellow cup he had used all week. He would not let Socorro take his dog to wash it. When Alejandro's phone rang, he screamed until his father turned it off.
By eleven, Alejandro wanted the family moved to another property.
"Different staff. New rooms. No access for anyone I haven't approved personally."
He said it to Rafael in the sitting room while Mateo stacked blocks beside Valeria.
At the word moved, the boy's hands stopped.
"Not in front of him," Valeria said.
Alejandro looked down, saw the rigid little back, and sent Rafael away.
"Nothing is happening today," Valeria told Mateo. "We are having lunch here. Then the garden, if you want."
He pressed the blocks together so hard one corner bent.
Dr. Elena Salcedo came that afternoon. She had been seeing Mateo for several months, although sessions had been interrupted by changing caregivers and the family's travel. Valeria expected irritation when Alejandro introduced the cleaner who had managed to reach his son.
Instead Dr. Salcedo asked, "What helped him feel able to come toward you?"
"I stopped trying to make him."
"Then let's help the rest of his day make that same sense."
She listened to what had happened in the corridor. She did not ask Mateo to repeat his words for an audience. Later, while he drew beside Valeria, she explained to Alejandro that no one should keep testing whether he would speak again.
"We need him to feel safe answering us," she said. "Including when his answer is no."
Alejandro looked toward his son.
"And if he won't come near me?"
"You can still be his father from six feet away."
After she left, Valeria found Alejandro in the empty dining room, looking at a place setting nobody had used.
"You haven't eaten," she said.
"Neither have you."
"I ate half a piece of toast while standing in a cupboard. Very luxurious."
He pulled out a chair. She sat, mostly because her legs were tired.
For a while they ate soup in silence.
Then he said, "He used to wake me by putting his feet on my face."
Valeria lowered her spoon.
"Before the attack?"
"Yes. He would crawl over his mother because he knew she'd make him lie down again. I would get up. He understood which of us was easier."
A small smile passed over his mouth and vanished.

"Now he looks at me as though I'm someone arriving to take something."
"You always arrive with something happening behind you. A guard. A phone call. A decision."
He pushed his bowl away.
"I'm trying to keep him alive."
"I know."
"No, you don't."
His voice sharpened. She felt herself sit straighter.
He saw it. His expression changed.
"I'm sorry. That wasn't fair."
Valeria set her spoon down.
"I don't know what it is to be you. But I know what it feels like when someone decides that because you're frightened, they should decide everything for you."
"Your brother?"
"Doctors talking over his head. Relatives telling him what he can manage. Me doing it too, when I'm scared. He hates it."
Alejandro rubbed his palms over his face.
"What if he never needs me the way he needs you?"
The question came out low and rough.
She had expected jealousy from this man at some point. She had not expected him to name it so plainly.
"Then you keep showing up anyway," she said. "You don't have to win every day."
His eyes met hers. There was no order in them, nothing demanding that she produce the right answer.
"You make it sound possible."
"Today you sat on the floor for twenty minutes to push a truck. It already is."
That night Alejandro tried to help with the bath. Mateo shrank away as soon as he entered the bathroom.
The disappointment crossed his father's face before he controlled it.
"All right," he said. "I'll be outside."
He sat against the wall beyond the open door while Valeria helped the boy into pajamas. His phone vibrated twice. He silenced it without looking.
Mateo stood beside his bed, watching the gap.
"Daddy there?" he whispered.
"Yes," Valeria said. "You can look."
The boy leaned around the doorframe.
Alejandro looked up. "I haven't gone anywhere."
Mateo retreated.
Valeria tucked the blanket around his feet. A few minutes later he pointed at the doorway.
"Light."
"You want more light?"
He nodded. She switched on the small lamp outside. It illuminated one of Alejandro's shoes and the edge of his sleeve.
Mateo settled onto the pillow.
"Can he sit in the chair?" Valeria asked.
The boy considered. Then he nodded once.
Alejandro rose slowly, as though any sudden movement might cancel the invitation.
He sat in the chair by the bed. His hands rested on his knees. When Mateo extended the dog toward him, he took it with both hands.
"He's tired," Mateo said.
"Then I'll be quiet."
Valeria stood in the doorway and watched the two of them breathe in the small pool of lamplight.
For the first time since arriving, she could imagine leaving the room without taking all of its peace with her.
At the stairs, Alejandro caught up.
"Your car is waiting."
"Thank you."
His gaze moved over her tired face.
"You can come later tomorrow."
"Tell him before breakfast."
"I will."
He reached out, hesitated, then brushed a loose thread from her shoulder. It was such a small, unnecessary gesture that she felt it more sharply than she should have.
"Good night, Valeria."
She carried the sound of her name all the way home.
