"The Cartel Boss’s Son Wouldn’t Let Anyone Touch Him—Until He Chose Me" Chapter 8
The Cost of Silence
Valeria put the photograph on the sideboard.
"We need to tell him together."
Socorro shook her head. "He'll send me away."
"He might."
The older woman looked at her in wounded surprise.
Valeria wanted to offer comfort. Then she remembered Mateo beneath the table with both hands over his mouth.
"I can't promise you what he'll do. But you can't keep this to yourself because you're frightened of the answer."
Socorro sat heavily on the hallway bench.
"I thought I was keeping the household together."
"Tell me what happened."
"Not to you," Socorro said after a moment. She lifted her chin with visible effort. "To him."
They spoke in the study while Mateo had his afternoon session. Valeria sat near the door. Socorro remained standing until Alejandro told her to sit.
For years she had accepted Daniel as an extension of his brother. When Alejandro was away, Daniel gave instructions. He settled staff problems. He had helped arrange the household after Lucía's death, when Alejandro could barely remain in a room long enough to eat.
"He said Mateo had to stop reminding you," Socorro said. "That you couldn't bear it. I thought he meant the crying."
"And then?" Alejandro asked.
"I heard him in the bathroom. Mateo was crying and he said, 'You remember what happens when people don't listen.'"
Alejandro's face went still.
Socorro began twisting a handkerchief.
"I opened the door. He told me to leave. Later I said I would speak to you."
"You didn't."
"He said my son would lose his position at the warehouse. That I would lose the house your mother let us live in. He knew about my grandson's school."
Alejandro's voice was very quiet.
"So you left my son alone with him again."
Socorro cried then. She did not deny it.
Valeria's stomach hurt. She had known hardship could make people accept terrible things. She hadn't expected to see the cost sitting across from her in a neatly pressed black dress.
"I tried to stay near them after that," Socorro said. "Not always. Not enough. I told myself he wouldn't really hurt him."
"Did he say anything about Lucía?"
Socorro reached into her handbag and placed an old phone on the desk.
"A message. From before the attack. She had asked me to keep her studio clear because she was meeting someone about documents. Daniel called while I was shopping. I didn't answer."
Alejandro waited while she found the recording. Her thumb shook so badly Valeria asked whether she wanted help. Socorro shook her head and tried again.
Daniel's voice emerged from the tiny speaker, irritated and unmistakable.
"Lucía needs to stop pulling the transport files. Tell her I will deal with the discrepancy. And don't let her take those copies out tomorrow. My brother doesn't need another problem."
The recording ended.
"She left the next day," Socorro whispered. "She didn't come home. Afterward, when I mentioned the message, he said people would ask why I hadn't warned anyone."

Alejandro closed his eyes.
Valeria had never seen him look so completely without defense.
He opened them and called Rafael. The phone and its message would be preserved. Socorro would give a full account to the lawyer, including every threat and every date she could remember.
Then he turned back to her.
"You won't be alone with Mateo again. Your employment here ends today. My lawyer will speak to you about the rest. The house and your family's work are not yours to bargain with me for silence. No one is to threaten them."
Socorro bowed her head.
"I loved his mother."
"I believe you," Alejandro said. "It doesn't change what you allowed."
After she left with Rafael, Valeria remained by the door.
Alejandro stared at the old phone.
"I put him in charge of everything because I couldn't stand hearing about sheets and meals and who's covering a shift. I called it trusting my family."
"He chose what to do with that trust."
"And I stopped looking."
She crossed the room. He looked up when she placed a hand on his shoulder.
He did not ask her to tell him he had done nothing wrong. She respected him for that.
Two days later, Gabriel went for his additional assessment.
Valeria took leave to accompany him. Alejandro had offered a car, and this time they accepted after Gabriel inspected the arrangement as though choosing transport for a visiting head of state.
The driver parked outside the hospital entrance. Gabriel complained about fasting for the tests. Valeria bought him a sandwich afterward, and they argued over whether he deserved two desserts.
Her phone vibrated while he was choosing a drink.
Unknown number.
A photograph showed Gabriel beside the hospital sign, his face turned toward her. It had been taken that morning.
Below it was a message.
You should concentrate on keeping your brother alive. Let my family handle its own problems.
Valeria's hand went cold around the phone.
She looked through the glass doors. People crossed the pavement. A woman balanced a baby against her shoulder. A man argued with a parking attendant.
Any of them could have been watching.
For several seconds she could not move.
Then Gabriel turned with two bottles of water.
"What?"
She wanted to say nothing. She wanted to get him home, pack their things, and disappear before anyone noticed she was frightened.
He saw the screen before she could hide it.
His face drained.
"Val."
"We're staying inside."
She guided him to a staffed reception desk, called the driver, then called Alejandro.
He answered on the second ring.
"Where are you?"
She told him. Her voice sounded surprisingly steady until she read the message aloud.
"Stay with the staff," he said. "Rafael will call your driver. I'm coming."
"Don't do something before you talk to me."
A beat of silence.
"I heard you."
She held the phone tighter.
"I need you to hear it now. I'm scared, Alejandro. I can't manage being afraid of what you might do as well."
His next breath came slowly.
"Then we'll decide the next step when I'm with you."
Gabriel sat beside her, holding both water bottles in his lap. She took one from him because his fingers had begun to shake.
They waited together beneath the hospital's bright, indifferent lights.
