"The Cartel Boss’s Son Wouldn’t Let Anyone Touch Him—Until He Chose Me" Chapter 9
The Truth He Couldn't Say
Alejandro arrived without the noise Valeria had been dreading.
He crossed the waiting room, crouched in front of Gabriel, and asked whether the tests had tired him. Only after Gabriel answered did he turn to her.
"May I see the message?"
She handed him the phone.
His face changed very little. She had learned that was sometimes when he was angriest.
"I want copies preserved," he said. "Then I want to get you both somewhere you choose, with people you trust."
Gabriel looked at him. "And after that?"
"After that, I speak to my lawyer."
"You have other people you could speak to."
Alejandro held his gaze. "Yes."
Valeria appreciated the absence of a comforting lie.
"We're asking you not to," Gabriel said.
Alejandro looked at her, then back at her brother.
"I know."
They chose a small apartment near the hospital that their mother could reach easily. Rafael arranged protection without turning the hallway into an armed camp. Valeria went with Gabriel, helped him put his things away, and sat with him until he admitted he wanted to sleep.
In the kitchen, she finally let herself shake.
Alejandro stood by the window. He didn't touch her until she reached for him.
She pressed her face against his chest. His shirt smelled clean, faintly of soap. The ordinariness of it nearly broke her.
"He watched my brother," she said.
"I know."
"I kept thinking if I hadn't taken the job—"
"Daniel sent that message. You didn't make him do it."
She gripped his shirt harder.
"Don't let me make excuses for him either," Alejandro said. "He's good at giving people reasons to blame themselves."
She drew back enough to see his face.
"Is that what he did to you?"
His mouth tightened. "For two years."
They did not kiss. He held her until the shaking eased, then made tea so badly she asked him to stop helping and hand her the kettle.
He obeyed.
Over the following days, Valeria learned the rest in pieces, always from someone who could answer her questions. Alejandro's lawyer explained that the threat, the recording, and the security files were being provided to investigators. A second inquiry into Lucía's death had begun.
The transport documents mentioned in Daniel's message were still in the studio, filed among receipts for a community art program Lucía had supported. She had been a shareholder in one of the family's legitimate businesses. She had noticed payments that didn't match the company's records and asked to see more.
Alejandro told Valeria himself what the discrepancies meant.
"Daniel was selling access to our routes to people who wanted leverage over me. Lucía found the payments. She was going to bring the copies to me."
"Why didn't she tell you first?"
"She had asked questions before. I told her I would handle it. Then I passed it to Daniel."

His shame was plain. He did not ask her to turn away from it.
The new review also reached a former member of Lucía's escort. He had survived the attack, left his job afterward, and received money through a company Daniel controlled. Rafael had found that company among the questionable payments.
The man now gave an account of orders to change the route and separate the vehicles. His account would have to be tested. It was still more than a frightened child's words carrying the weight alone.
On Thursday, Daniel agreed to come to the estate with his lawyer. Alejandro's counsel would be present. The meeting would be recorded openly. The investigators knew it was taking place.
Valeria learned about it when Alejandro came to the apartment.
"You don't have to be there," he said.
"Is Mateo staying at the house?"
"No. Dr. Salcedo will see him here tomorrow afternoon, if you and your family are comfortable with that. He knows where I'll be."
"I want to hear what Daniel says about the threat."
Alejandro's first reaction showed in the set of his shoulders. Then he nodded.
"You can leave whenever you want."
"So can you. You don't have to get the answer from his mouth for it to be true."
For a moment he looked very tired.
"I know. I still need to look at him."
Daniel arrived wearing a gray suit and the expression of a man inconvenienced by other people's emotions.
Valeria sat beside Alejandro, their chairs close but not touching. The lawyers sat across from each other. Rafael remained near the door.
Daniel saw her and smiled without warmth.
"I wondered who would be advising you today."
Alejandro laid a printed photograph on the table. Gabriel outside the hospital.
"Did you send this?"
Daniel's lawyer leaned toward him. Daniel waved him off.
"I told her to keep her priorities straight. Nobody touched the boy."
Valeria's hands went cold again.
"You wanted me to think someone would," she said.
Daniel looked at Alejandro. "This is what you've reduced us to? Explaining ourselves to an employee?"
Alejandro did not raise his voice.
"You threatened her brother because she heard my son asking for help. Answer the question in front of you."
His lawyer put the preserved voicemail on the table. Then the dates. The payments. The escort's new statement.
Daniel's expression changed as each item appeared. By the time the recorded voice said Lucía's name, he had stopped leaning back in his chair.
"She didn't understand what she was looking at," he said.
Alejandro's fingers curled against the tabletop.
"Then you could have explained."
"You think you would have listened? Your wife waved papers and suddenly everyone else was disposable."
"What did you tell the men on that road?"
Daniel's lawyer spoke sharply. "Don't answer that."
Daniel turned on him. "I told them to stop the car and get the documents. I didn't tell them to shoot her."

The room became so quiet that Valeria heard the air conditioner switch off.
Alejandro stared at his brother.
"You knew Mateo was with her."
Daniel looked away.
"You knew."
"It wasn't supposed to happen that way."
Valeria watched Alejandro stand. Rafael shifted beside the door, but Alejandro did not cross the table.
"And afterward you went into his bedroom. You put your hands on him."
Daniel said nothing.
"He was two years old."
The last words broke in Alejandro's throat.
For the first time, Daniel seemed unable to find a useful answer.
"He recognized your voice," Alejandro said. "He heard you in this house and you realized he remembered enough to be frightened."
Daniel rubbed his mouth.
"Children repeat things. He would have made everything worse."
Valeria stood too. She could no longer bear being seated while he said it.
"You made him believe his father would die if he spoke."
Daniel's eyes moved to her.
"You should have stayed in the kitchen."
Alejandro stepped beside her.
"The meeting is over."
His counsel collected the papers. Daniel began to object, but his lawyer caught his arm and spoke urgently into his ear.
Rafael opened the door. The investigators waiting beyond it took charge of what happened next.
Valeria kept her eyes on Alejandro as Daniel left. She had imagined rage would fill the room when the truth came out.
Instead Alejandro sat down with both hands pressed against his mouth.
She moved her chair beside his.
For a long time he couldn't speak. When he finally did, his voice was almost unrecognizable.
"I told him not to upset his uncle. I said it to my son."
Valeria took his hand.
"You can tell him something else now."
That evening, back at the apartment, Mateo stood in the sitting-room doorway holding his dog.
Alejandro knelt.
"Daniel won't be visiting you. The grown-ups are dealing with what he did. You didn't cause any of it."
Mateo studied his face.
"Daddy go?"
Alejandro shook his head.
"No. I'm staying tonight. Your blanket is already here."
The boy looked toward the bag beside the sofa, then came forward slowly.
His father waited until the small arms went around his neck.
Valeria turned away just long enough to wipe her face.
