"The Cartel Boss’s Son Wouldn’t Let Anyone Touch Him—Until He Chose Me" Chapter 11
The Home We Chose
On Monday, Valeria arrived with Oso, a bag of groceries her mother insisted were better than anything the mansion bought, and no idea what to wear to dinner.
Mateo met her in the kitchen.
"You came."
"I said Monday."
He took the dog, checked both ears, and tucked him beneath his arm. Then he hugged her around the knees.
Alejandro stood behind him, looking absurdly proud of having survived a weekend that involved one broken cup, an unsuccessful pancake, and a very long explanation about why the moon couldn't be brought inside.
"How were the pancakes?" she asked.
Mateo wrinkled his nose.
"We don't need to discuss everything," Alejandro said.
That evening he took her to a small restaurant where she had once eaten with Gabriel after a good hospital appointment. The tables were close together. Someone in the kitchen was arguing about a missing delivery. Alejandro's car did not fit into the first parking space.
Valeria watched him assess the second one.
"Don't even think about buying the building."
He looked at her with offended dignity.
"I was thinking about walking."
"A promising development."
Over dinner she learned that he hated olives but had spent years accepting them because his mother believed they were sophisticated. He learned that Valeria had once failed a driving lesson by arguing with the instructor about a direction she had misunderstood.
He laughed until the waiter came to check whether they needed anything.
For two hours they were not discussing a locked room, an unpaid bill, or a child who couldn't sleep.
When he drove her home, she invited him inside for coffee. Gabriel opened the door before she found her keys.
"Ten minutes," he told Alejandro. "We have standards."
"Your sister kept me out past my bedtime."
"Her influence is terrible. Come in."
The ordinary happiness of it caught Valeria by surprise. She stood in the little kitchen while Alejandro helped her mother find clean cups, and for once she didn't feel as though she were waiting for life to begin after the next emergency.
The emergency still came.
On the morning of Gabriel's surgery, she sat between her mother and Alejandro, her hands cold no matter how tightly she folded them. The operation took longer than the first estimate. Every opening door made her look up.
Alejandro did not tell her it would be fine. He brought water, answered the calls she couldn't bear to answer, and let her crush his fingers.
When Gabriel's surgeon finally appeared, Valeria rose so quickly that the room tipped. Alejandro steadied her elbow. They listened together. The operation had gone as intended. The next days would matter. They could see him when the recovery team was ready.
Valeria sat back down and began to cry.
Her mother held her on one side. Alejandro held her on the other.
Later, when Gabriel was awake enough to complain, his first complaint was about everyone looking at him.

"I spent all that time unconscious and you're the ones who look terrible."
Valeria laughed through the fresh tears on her face.
"Try being a more relaxing patient."
His recovery had difficult days. There were medicines to remember, appointments, unexpected fatigue. But gradually he began walking farther. He grew bored enough to become unbearable. Their mother called that the best sign yet.
During those weeks, Valeria let the trial agreement end.
Alejandro hired a regular caregiver who had time to build her own relationship with Mateo. Valeria introduced them slowly, then stopped hovering over every game. The boy protested some mornings. On others he was too busy making a bridge for his cars to notice she had gone to the kitchen.
She spent more evenings at the estate, but they were evenings she chose. When she needed to go home, she went. When Alejandro asked her to stay, he asked as a man who wanted her beside him.
The first night she stayed in his room, she lay awake after he fell asleep, listening to the unfamiliar quiet.
Then he stirred, found her hand under the sheet, and pulled it against his chest without opening his eyes.
She stopped counting the reasons she should be frightened long enough to sleep.
Months passed in imperfect, ordinary increments.
Daniel remained in custody as the case against him moved forward. His threats and his part in the attack had become matters for adults to answer for. Socorro gave further statements. Her family was left alone, but she did not return to the house.
Valeria sometimes thought of her while passing the bench in the hall. She could pity the fear that had trapped the older woman and still remember who had paid for her silence.
Alejandro closed two warehouses and withdrew from routes that had once made people lower their voices. The losses angered men who were accustomed to getting what they wanted from him. There were tense calls, long meetings, and decisions he brought home looking older than when he had left.
Valeria asked questions. Sometimes she disliked the answers. He answered anyway.
He did not pretend a few signatures erased the life he had built. She did not pretend loving him meant she had stopped seeing it.
But the house changed in ways she could touch.
The guards no longer stood outside Mateo's bedroom. Family meals happened at the small table near the garden rather than beneath the enormous chandelier. Phones stayed outside during them, unless the hospital called about Gabriel.
Lucía's photographs returned to the shelves.
Her studio opened on an afternoon when Mateo asked to see the big hat.
Alejandro found it in a cupboard, slightly crushed beneath a folded cloth. Mateo tried it on. The brim covered his eyes.
Valeria laughed before she could stop herself.
Mateo pushed the hat up and looked at his father.
Alejandro was smiling through tears.

"Exactly like a mushroom," he said.
The boy did not understand the joke, but he laughed because they did.
They kept the room for painting. The north door stayed open when anyone was inside. On the first visit Mateo lasted three minutes. On the next, he helped wash a brush. No one called either visit a failure.
There were still nights when he woke frightened.
One evening, rain struck the windows hard enough to rattle the old frame. Mateo knocked over his cup and began to cry before anyone could reach him.
Alejandro stopped a few steps away.
"I'm here. Do you want me close?"
Mateo shook his head.
"All right. I'll sit on the rug."
Valeria fetched a towel. She wiped up the water without making a spectacle of the broken cup. Across the room, Alejandro waited while his son caught his breath.
After a while the boy went to him.
Valeria stood by the kitchen door with the wet towel in her hands, watching Alejandro rub his son's back. Nothing extraordinary had happened. There had been no brave speech, no sudden revelation.
They had known what to do, and the child had known where to go.
On Mateo's fifth birthday, Gabriel brought an enormous cake decorated with a crooked yellow truck. He had helped choose it and insisted the uneven wheels gave it personality.
Valeria's mother brought food for twice as many people as had been invited. Dr. Salcedo stopped by briefly with a book. The new caregiver hung paper flags with Mateo's solemn supervision.
Alejandro stood on a ladder in the garden while his son criticized the placement of every balloon.
"Higher, Daddy."
"I'm running out of ladder."
"Be taller."
Valeria laughed so hard she had to put down the plates.
Later, after the cake, Mateo brought her a folded sheet of paper. It showed three people beside a brown animal. One person wore a vast hat, apparently because his father's drawing skills were no better than hers.
"That's us," the boy explained.
She touched the little figure beside him.
"You gave me very long arms."
"For hugs."
Her eyes filled before she could answer.
Alejandro came to stand beside her. He looked at the drawing and slipped his hand around hers.
Mateo considered them, then took the picture back and placed it carefully beneath a plate so the breeze wouldn't carry it away.
From inside the house, Gabriel called that someone needed to rescue the remaining cake from their mother.
"She's packing it for a siege!"
Valeria turned toward the kitchen. Mateo caught her other hand.
A familiar tightening passed through her chest. She looked down, ready to explain where she was going and when she would return.
But he was smiling.
He reached for his father's hand too, linking the three of them beneath the paper flags.
"Come on," he said. "We're missing the cake."
Valeria looked at Alejandro over the boy's head. His thumb moved once across her knuckles.
Then they went inside together.
