"I Hid My Name—Then Got Pregnant by the Mafia Heir" Chapter 3
Your Father Knew Mine
I pushed back so hard the chair scraped the floor.
"How do you know that?"
Alessandro stood, then stopped when I lifted my hand.
"My father hired an accounting firm four years ago," he said. "Daniel Mercer led the review. I saw his name on the engagement documents."
"Your father's company?"
"One of the construction subsidiaries."
My father's voice came back to me: Never confuse an expensive office with an honest business.
"Sit down," I told Alessandro.
He did.
I remained standing. It was easier to breathe that way.
"My father found payments going through companies connected to Victor Sloane. He said he was going to take what he'd found to federal investigators. Three days later, he and my mother died on the highway."
Alessandro's expression changed at Sloane's name.
"The crash outside Joliet?"
"Yes."
"I remember the report. I didn't know who they were."
I studied him, searching for the delayed response, the calculation, anything that might give him away. His gaze stayed on mine.
"Were you working with your father then?"
"I handled the family's restaurants and hospitality properties. I joined the construction oversight meetings later."
"And now?"
"Now I know enough to understand why my father preferred those subjects separate."
I sat down because my knees had begun to shake.
He pushed the water toward me without comment.
I told him about the four years afterward. The unanswered questions. The old news reports. The way I had legally become Emma Hayes, moved neighborhoods, and stopped posting photographs of myself anywhere. It wasn't a perfect disappearance. It was the best one I could afford.
"Then Sloane announced the sale of the Mariner project," I said. "That name was in my father's notes. I thought if the records were being moved, this might be my last chance to find out where."
"So you took the catering shift."
"I wanted to get close enough to hear him talk about the sale. I wasn't planning to confront him."
"Did you?"
"No. I saw him laughing with someone who had sent flowers to my parents' funeral. I dropped an entire tray of champagne."
Alessandro's mouth tightened. "That's when I found you outside the service corridor."
I nodded.
He had offered me a clean napkin. Not money, not a lecture about clumsiness. A napkin, and enough space to stop shaking.
"I didn't know your last name until later," I said. "By then I should have walked away."
"But you didn't."
"Neither did you."
The silence changed between us. For a moment, the dining room held the memory of a different room, a different night, my hands unfastening the buttons of his shirt.
I broke eye contact first.
"I didn't invent the parts that mattered," I said. "But I understand if you don't believe that."
"I believe you."
The speed of his answer frightened me almost as much as disbelief would have.

"You shouldn't decide that so easily."
"It hasn't been easy. I've had six weeks to remember you, and one evening to understand why you left."
He looked tired. I hadn't noticed before.
He asked permission to call Rafe. I listened while he requested the old records and made it explicit that nothing about me or the pregnancy was to go through his father's staff.
When the call ended, he said, "You can stay in the guest room. You can ask Liam to collect you. Either way, I'll keep looking."
"Why?"
"Because someone used you to send me a message. And because if my family helped hurt yours, you deserve an answer."
He didn't mention the baby. I was grateful enough for that to hurt.
At the bedroom door, I stopped him.
"I don't want to be alone yet."
He sat in the chair beside the window while I lay down, fully dressed, beneath the comforter. The bedside lamp made a warm circle on his hands.
"Did you want children?" I asked.
He took his time.
"Not with the life my father expects me to lead."
My stomach tightened.
"That's not the same as not wanting this child," he said. "I'm trying to work out how to deserve it."
I turned toward him.
For once, I had no clever answer.
He stayed until I slept.
The next afternoon, Rafe arrived with a laptop and a woman Alessandro introduced as Nora Bennett, an attorney who had never worked for Matteo Vitali.
"I called her because I don't want my family's lawyer telling you what your options are," Alessandro said.
Nora asked whether I wanted him in the room. I said yes.
Rafe had obtained the access history for the old accounting archive through Alessandro's own company administrator. Someone had used my father's dormant credentials the previous evening.
"Not your father," Rafe said before I could ask. "An old account. It should have been disabled."
"What did they open?"
"The Mariner folder. We're tracing the access."
Alessandro sat beside me, close enough that his sleeve brushed mine.
Then Rafe placed a second file on the screen.
"The old security office kept dictated incident notes," he said. "Your father recorded this after Mercer's crash. The archive included an attachment."
Alessandro read the date. His face emptied.
"Have you listened?" I asked him.
"No. Rafe called me as soon as he found it."
"Play it."
He pressed the key himself.
A chair creaked through the laptop speaker. Then an older man's voice, low and irritated, filled the room.
"Sloane called me the night before the accident. He said Mercer had become a problem."
I stopped breathing.
The recording continued, but I reached across Alessandro and paused it.
"How much did your father know?"
His hand was rigid beside the keyboard.
"I don't know," he said.
"Then we're going to find out together."
