"The Little Girl Who Called a Billionaire’s Bluff" Chapter 1
A Million Dollars
"Make me walk, little girl, and I'll give you a million dollars."
Someone laughed behind Ethan Cole. A phone rose above a champagne glass.
The girl standing beside his wheelchair looked at the phone, then at her mother, who was stranded near the catering table with a tray in her hands.
"Mr. Cole, I'm sorry," the woman said. "She shouldn't have interrupted you."
"She said she could help. I'm giving her an opportunity."
It sounded uglier aloud than it had inside his head. Ethan kept smiling anyway.
The girl wore a blue dress with a carefully repaired pocket. One of her shoes had separated at the toe. She pressed it against the gravel as though she could hide the gap.
"I didn't say I could fix your legs," she said. "I said I saw you standing last night."
Ethan's smile stopped.
Beside him, Charles Whitmore lowered his glass.
"Standing?"
"In the room with the big windows," the girl continued. "You were holding the bars. Your knees shook, but you stayed up until the woman told you to sit down."
Ethan looked toward the eastern wing of the house. The rehabilitation room was screened from the garden by cypress trees. People attending his fundraising reception had no reason to go anywhere near it.
Neither did a child.
"Lily," her mother said. "Come here, please."
The girl took half a step back.
Ethan noticed the phone again. Its owner, a young man whose name he had already forgotten, adjusted the angle.
He knew that movement. Four months earlier, someone had filmed him failing to rise between parallel bars. The clip had escaped a private family chat and become an evening's entertainment for strangers.
Apparently the entertainment was continuing.
"How did you get into that part of my house?" he asked.
"She didn't go inside," her mother said quickly. "We were here for the setup last night. The staff restroom was closed, and someone directed us along the east walkway. She stopped at the window while I was asking where to go."
"You watched me."
Lily's fingers closed around her pocket.
"Only for a minute. I wasn't laughing."
The words found their way beneath his irritation.
He had assumed she wanted an audience because there was already one around him. He had not asked what she meant. He had offered an impossible sum in the same voice he used to dismiss an absurd proposal in a meeting.
Now fifty guests were watching a child try not to cry.
Charles gave an awkward chuckle. "Well, you can't blame her for trying. A million dollars would encourage anybody."
"I wasn't asking him for money," Lily said.
"Do you even know how much that is?" the man with the phone asked.
Ethan turned toward him.
Before he could speak, Lily answered.
"Enough for my mom to stop working after dinner."
Her mother looked down at the tray.

No one laughed this time.
Ethan could have ended it there. Nathan, his assistant, was waiting a few yards away with the practiced expression of someone prepared to remove an inconvenience.
Instead Ethan said, "Put the phone away."
The young man blinked. "I was only recording the bet."
"Then you have enough."
The phone disappeared into a jacket pocket.
Ethan turned back to the girl. His collar felt too tight. He had spent the past eighteen months becoming quick at anger because it was easier to manage than anything underneath it.
"What were you going to say before I interrupted?"
Lily looked at her mother.
The woman set the tray down. "You don't have to answer any more questions, sweetheart."
"I know."
Lily faced him again.
"You looked happy when you stood up. Then you saw the window and sat down. I thought maybe you didn't want anybody to know you could do it."
That was almost right. Worse, it was close enough that he had no ready defense.
He had seen his own reflection in the glass. The figure pulling itself upright, elbows shaking, had looked nothing like the man he still expected to see.
"Standing for a few seconds isn't the same as walking," he said.
"I know. My dad helped people who got hurt. Sometimes they needed chairs and crutches too."
He glanced at her mother. She stood beside Lily now, one hand resting lightly between the girl's shoulders.
"Your father is a therapist?"
"He was a paramedic."
Was. Ethan knew the small, permanent damage contained in that word.
"I'm sorry."
Lily nodded with the solemn efficiency of a child who had heard it often.
Nathan approached. "Would you like me to take our guests through to the terrace?"
"Yes."
Charles hesitated. "Ethan, the auction hasn't started."
"It will survive ten minutes without me."
The guests moved reluctantly. Conversation resumed in careful little bursts. Ethan waited until the nearest voices had receded before looking at Lily's mother.
"What is your name?"
"Claire Bennett."
"Mrs. Bennett, I behaved badly. Your daughter made an observation, and I turned it into a spectacle. I'm sorry."
Claire watched him without making it easier.
"She was trying to be kind," she said.
"I understand that now."
"You frightened her."
He looked at Lily. "I shouldn't have."
Her grip on the pocket loosened a little.
"Are you taking back the million dollars?"
For the first time that afternoon, Ethan almost smiled without intending to hurt someone.
"You said you weren't asking for money."
"I wasn't. Then you offered it."
"Lily," Claire said, but there was less alarm in her voice.
Ethan shifted forward. The silver chain beneath his collar slipped free, and the small oval medal at its end caught the light.
Lily stopped looking at his face.
Her expression changed so suddenly that he glanced down at his shirt.
"What is it?"
She lifted one finger but did not touch the medal.
"Where did you get that?"
Ethan closed his hand around it. "Someone gave it to me after my accident."
Claire's hand tightened on her daughter's shoulder.
"Mom," Lily whispered. "It's the one from Dad's picture."
Ethan looked from the child to her mother.
"What picture?"
Claire had gone very still.
"I think," she said, "we need somewhere private to talk."
