"The Little Girl Who Called a Billionaire’s Bluff" Chapter 6
The Wrong Kind of Help
Ethan bought the car on a Thursday because the solution seemed obvious.
Claire's old sedan had failed twice more. He had watched her turn down a late shift because she couldn't guarantee the journey home. The cost of a reliable replacement was less than he spent on several things he could no longer name without embarrassment.
He instructed Nathan to have a modest used hatchback delivered to her building.
"Have you asked her?" Nathan said.
"She's not going to ask me for a car."
"That wasn't my question."
Ethan signed the authorization.
By Friday morning, he understood why Nathan had hesitated.
Claire arrived at his office carrying a set of keys in a bakery bag. She set them on his desk.
"You need to take it back."
"Good morning to you too."
"I didn't want to have this conversation in front of Lily."
He motioned toward a chair. She remained standing.
Through the glass wall, an employee glanced in, then found a reason to walk faster.
"It isn't a sports car," Ethan said. "It's safe. It has a warranty. You need transportation."
"I know what I need. I've been arranging repairs."
"On a car that has already cost you more than it's worth."
"You don't know what it has cost me."
He stopped.
That was true. He had asked Nathan to solve a problem and received a number. He had not asked Claire anything at all.
She sat down at last.
"My landlord saw it arrive. So did three neighbors. The delivery man asked where I wanted the paperwork, and Lily came down thinking we'd won something."
"You have won something, if I ever reach that fountain."
"Don't make a joke of it."
He leaned back.
Claire looked exhausted. There was flour near the cuff of her jacket and a small burn on one wrist. He had intended to remove a burden. Instead he had given her a public event to explain.
"People will say whatever they like," he said.
"You have gates and lawyers between you and what people say. I have to collect my daughter from school."
He looked toward the windows. Twenty floors below, traffic moved through the city without his permission.
"I didn't think about that."
"I know you meant to help. But you made a decision about our life without including me."
He turned back.
"Then tell me how to help."
"Ask first. And accept it if the answer is no."
The silence stretched. Ethan was good at negotiating when he could offer a better number. Here the number was the problem.
"All right," he said. "I'll arrange the return."
Claire's shoulders lowered slightly.
"Thank you."
"You could still accept it."
She looked at him.
"I'm stopping now," he said.
A reluctant smile touched her mouth.
He called Nathan while she was there. The return would be handled without further contact at her building. Claire listened, then stood.

At the door, she paused.
"Actually, there is something you could help with."
He made himself wait.
"Lily has an application for a Saturday science program at the library. They need a form printed, scanned, and emailed. Our printer died last month, and the place near us charges by the page. Could Nathan help me send it?"
Ethan glanced at the car keys in the paper bag.
"Yes."
"It's six pages."
"I believe we have the resources."
She smiled properly this time.
Nathan helped her with the application. Ethan kept working, but he heard her thank him through the open door. It was an ordinary exchange, unburdened by gratitude too large to carry.
The next day, Claire arrived at the house with Lily and a container of soup.
"Aunt Jess made it," Lily explained. "Mom said you have enough people cooking for you, but Aunt Jess said rich people can still eat soup."
"Your aunt sounds sensible."
"She put her name on the container. You have to give it back."
"Strict terms."
The visit felt normal again, which he had not realized he feared losing.
Over the next few weeks, he practiced asking.
Would Claire like him to arrange a ride when her car was at the garage? She accepted one Saturday and declined the next, when Jess was available.
Would Lily like an older laptop from his office for the library program? Claire asked about the condition and whether it would be a loan. They agreed on a loan, and Lily signed a receipt with unnecessary ceremony.
Would they stay for dinner after a late appointment? Sometimes.
He discovered that a refusal did not necessarily mean rejection. Frequently it meant there was a casserole at home that needed eating.
By the seventh week, Maya had introduced forearm crutches for brief practice when appropriate. Ethan managed a few feet with her close beside him, then sat down shaking with effort.
Claire handed him water.
"May I?" she asked, pointing to the towel that had slipped beneath his chair.
He looked at her.
"You're making fun of me."
"A little."
"You may retrieve the towel."
She did, smiling.
Lily was at the desk, typing the title of her science project with two fingers. The laptop had become covered in removable stickers. One corner featured a frog wearing a crown.
"That's company equipment," he told her.
"It needed a manager."
Claire laughed, and Ethan found he was no longer irritated by how much of his house had begun to contain evidence of them.
After lunch, while Lily packed her bag, Claire asked about the counselor he'd mentioned.
"I went back," he said.
"Was it useful?"
"Unpleasantly."
"That sounds promising."
He looked at her hands folded around the empty soup container.
"Thank you for bringing the car back."
Her eyebrows rose. "I didn't expect you to thank me for that."
"Neither did I."
From the doorway, Lily called that they were going to miss their bus if adults kept talking.
Claire stood, but Ethan stopped her with one more question.
"Would you like to come next week?"
She looked toward her daughter, then back at him.
"Yes," she said. "We would."
