"The Little Girl Who Promised the Mafia Boss He Would Walk Again" Chapter 2
The Yellow House
"Mommy gave it to me. I was supposed to give it to you."
Lyla reached toward the watch, then stopped. "I didn't break it, did I?"
"No."
Charles looked at Mrs. Bell.
The older woman's expression softened. "Perhaps you should read the letter."
He opened the envelope Daniel handed him.
Charles, it began.
He recognized the slant of the C. Elena had always leaned too hard on the first letter of his name.
I'm alive. I know that is a terrible way to begin a letter after twenty years. Mrs. Bell is bringing my daughter because I promised her we would stop hiding from this. Please call me before you decide you never want to see me again.
Below it were a number and an address in Queens.
He read the first two words again.
His fingers had begun to shake.
"What's your mother's name?" he asked Lyla.
"Elena. But people at work call her Rose."
For twenty years he had imagined strangers saying that name in hospitals, police stations, and places he paid other men to search because he could not bear to search them himself.
Now it belonged to a little girl's ordinary answer.
"Your mommy is my sister," he said.
"I know. You're Uncle Charles."
His chest tightened so sharply that he shifted in his chair.
"She told you about me?"
"She said you might be cross."
"She was right about that."
Lyla studied him. "Are you cross with me?"
"No." He answered too quickly, then softened his voice. "You haven't done anything wrong."
Daniel offered his phone. Charles entered the number from the letter himself.
The call rang twice.
"Mrs. Bell?"
His sister's voice was older. He knew it anyway.
Charles turned his chair away from the watching room.
"It's me."
Silence met him. Then a breath that broke halfway through.
"Charles."
He closed his eyes.
There were questions he had carried for half his life. None came out properly.
"Are you hurt?"
"No. Is Lyla all right?"
"She's here. What happened?"
Elena hesitated.
Lyla tugged his sleeve. "Ask her about the bad men."
He looked down.
"What men?"
"They came to our house. Mommy cried after."
The room seemed to sharpen around him.
"Elena. Tell me who's there."
"Nobody now. They were lawyers from the family trust. They didn't hurt me."
"Then why did you cry?"
"Because they knew my name. Because I couldn't keep pretending the rest of you didn't exist."
His anger returned, hot and welcome after the shock.
"You could have called me."
"I know."
"You sent a child instead."
"I sent Mrs. Bell with a letter, and my daughter asked to come. I thought you might refuse to read anything from me. It was unfair to put that on either of them."
Charles looked toward the small white shoes in Mrs. Bell's hand.
"We're coming to you."
"You don't have to decide tonight."

"I've had twenty years to wait. I'm finished."
He ended the call before she could apologize again.
Daniel had already arranged an appropriate child seat in the waiting car. Mrs. Bell asked to ride with them; Charles told her he would be grateful.
He had not used that word to a stranger in a long time.
At the hotel entrance, the cool April air reached his damp shirt. Standing had exhausted him. Daniel noticed and positioned the chair carefully beside the open car door.
"Let's do the usual transfer," he said quietly.
Charles wanted to argue. Then his right leg trembled before he even moved.
He accepted Daniel's help.
Lyla climbed into her seat on the other side. Mrs. Bell sat between them and checked the straps while Charles arranged the watch in his palm.
"You don't have to stand again," Lyla told him.
He glanced across at her.
"You already showed me."
He looked out the window until he trusted his expression.
The car moved east through Manhattan. Daniel made a brief call from the front seat, canceling the rest of Charles's evening without explanation.
"Mommy says you like blackberry jam," Lyla announced.
Charles turned back.
"I used to."
"Don't you like it now?"
"I haven't thought about it."
"You should have some."
Mrs. Bell smiled at the windshield.
Lyla continued. "She said a goose chased you into a pond."
Daniel coughed.
Charles leaned forward. "You have a cold, Mercer?"
"Apparently, sir."
"It was an unusually aggressive goose," Charles told Lyla.
"Did you say sorry to it?"
"It was the goose that owed me an apology."
Her laugh was sudden and delighted. Elena had laughed like that, with her whole body, before she learned how to be careful around their father.
Charles rolled the watch between his fingers.
"Has she told you lots of stories?"
Lyla nodded. "You carried her when her ankle hurt. And you hid toast in your coat when she didn't want dinner."
Charles remembered the crumbs in the lining. His father had caught him and called the gesture ridiculous. Elena had eaten every bite behind her bedroom door.
"She remembers that?"
"It was cheese toast."
He pressed his lips together.
The city thinned into streets of small houses and parked cars. Lyla grew quiet, her head nodding against the side of her seat.
"Does your mother have anyone at home with her?" he asked Mrs. Bell softly.
"I live next door. I checked on her before we left."
"And her husband?"
Mrs. Bell looked toward the child.
"She'll tell you herself."
He nodded. He had no right to demand twenty years from a neighbor in the back of a car.
They turned onto Bellweather Lane.
"That's ours!" Lyla sat upright. "The yellow one. See the flowers?"
Charles saw a narrow porch, chipped white rails, and blue pots crowded with plants. A child's windmill turned beside the steps.
Nothing about the house looked hidden.
That hurt more than he expected.
He had paid men to follow rumors across oceans. All this time, his sister had eventually made a life close enough to visit on a Sunday.
The porch light came on before the car stopped.
A woman stepped outside in a gray cardigan, one hand braced against the doorframe.
Charles saw the years first. The shorter hair, the tiredness around her eyes. Then she lifted her chin, and he saw the seventeen-year-old who had once insisted she could cut her own bangs.
Daniel opened his door.
Across the car, Lyla called, "Mommy!"
Elena hurried down the steps. She caught her daughter as Mrs. Bell helped her onto the sidewalk, then looked over the child's curls at Charles.
His sister was alive.
And for the first time that night, Charles had no idea what to say.
