"The Little Girl Who Promised the Mafia Boss He Would Walk Again" Chapter 3
Twenty Years at the Door
Elena put Lyla down and came to the car.
"You look like Dad," she said.
Charles felt his face close.
"That's a poor opening."
"I know. I had a better one before you got here."
Her attempt at a smile failed. He watched her hands knot in the edges of her cardigan.
Daniel brought the chair around. Charles transferred into it, aware of Elena watching and refusing to meet her eyes until he was settled.
She stepped aside as he approached the gate.
"There's a step at the porch. We can go through the kitchen. It's level at the back."
He looked at the narrow path she indicated.
"You've thought about this."
"Every time I saw your photograph."
"But you didn't call."
"No."
That single word left him with nowhere to put his anger. He had imagined excuses he could tear apart. He was less prepared for a woman who stood before him and admitted what she had done.
Lyla slipped between them.
"Aren't you going to hug?"
Elena wiped her cheek quickly.
"Only if he wants to, sweetheart."
Charles looked at his sister. Twenty years had taken their father's funeral, his accident, her wedding, the birth of this child. They stood between them as plainly as the little gate.
He held out one hand.
Elena took it. Then she bent, and he pulled her against him.
For a moment she stayed rigid, as though she didn't quite believe she had permission. Then her arms closed around his shoulders.
"I thought you were dead," he said into her hair.
"I'm so sorry."
His grip tightened. He let it, even though part of him wanted her to feel the force of what she had done.
Lyla pressed herself against his knee.
"I want in too."
Charles lifted his arm, and she tucked herself into the space beside her mother.
Mrs. Bell made an unnecessary announcement about fetching the backpack. Daniel studied the gate latch with professional attention.
Inside, Elena put the kettle on with unsteady hands.
The kitchen smelled of toast and dish soap. A small sweater hung from a chair. There was a crayon mark beside the refrigerator handle and a photograph of Lyla with a missing front curl, evidently the result of a haircut she had administered herself.
Charles could have bought the entire street. He felt like an intruder at its smallest kitchen table.
Mrs. Bell took Lyla next door to find pajamas and something to eat. Daniel remained in the living room, within hearing distance but out of sight.
Elena sat opposite Charles.
"Start at the beginning," he said.
She looked at the watch he had placed between them.
"There was a man named Thomas Everly. He came to see me outside school when I was seventeen. He said Dad was his father."
Charles stared at her.
"We have a brother?"
"Yes."

He waited for her to correct herself. She didn't.
"Does Mother know?"
"I never told her. I don't know what Dad told her."
Elena wrapped her hands around her untouched mug.
"Thomas had photographs. Letters. I took them to Dad because I thought there had to be an explanation."
"And?"
"He told me I was too young to understand. Then he said I would ruin Mother's life if I repeated it."
Charles could hear their father's voice in the sentence. Richard Whitmore had always preferred to make an order sound like somebody else's responsibility.
"Why didn't you come to me?"
"You were working beside him every day. You defended him whenever I argued with him. I thought you'd tell him everything I said."
Charles opened his mouth, then remembered lecturing her about gratitude after their father canceled her summer plans.
At twenty-three he had mistaken obedience for maturity.
"I might have," he admitted.
Elena looked down.
"Thomas stopped answering my calls. Dad said he'd gone abroad. I thought something had happened to him, so I went to Boston, to an address on one of his letters."
"You found him?"
"Yes. Dad had paid him a settlement. I thought Thomas had sold us out. I was cruel about it."
"What was the money for?"
"His mother's treatment. She was very ill. I learned that after I said things I couldn't take back."
Elena rubbed a thumb over the mug's chipped rim.
"Marianne let me stay a few nights. I stayed longer. I couldn't face Dad, and after a while I couldn't face you either."
"That explains weeks. It doesn't explain twenty years."
"No," she said. "It doesn't."
He was grateful she hadn't tried to make it.
She described rented rooms, school, work. She had begun using Rose, her middle name, and later changed her surname to Everly with Marianne's blessing. Thomas's mother had given her shelter when she was frightened and stubborn enough to confuse shelter with a whole new life.
Their father's search had followed an early theory that she had gone overseas. Years later, Charles had kept paying for updates that mostly repeated old failures.
He remembered signing the invoices without opening the reports.
"We were looking for a girl somebody had taken," he said. "You were becoming somebody else."
"I should have told you. After Dad died, especially. I nearly came to the funeral."
His hand tightened around his mug.
"Nearly doesn't give Mother her daughter back."
Elena flinched. "I know."
From next door came Lyla's distant laugh. Charles let the sound settle before he spoke again.
"Her father?"
"Adam Bennett. We met at a friend's dinner. He taught middle school." Her expression changed, becoming private and tender. "He died after an illness when she was a baby."
"Elena."
"That was another time I should have called."
He reached across the table, stopped, and finally covered her hand.
She cried without making a sound.
After a while she brought him a folder. The trust lawyers had come because an old packet from their father's attorney had surfaced during an archive review. Elena had received copies three weeks earlier. The visit had made avoiding them impossible.
"I packed a bag," she admitted. "Then Lyla asked whether we were leaving Mrs. Bell. I heard myself making the same mistake again."
Charles looked toward the hallway, where a little suitcase stood beside a framed photograph.
"So you sent her to me."
"With someone I trust. But I should have come myself."
He picked up the folder. "Where is Thomas now?"
Elena's eyes moved toward the photograph.
Charles followed her gaze.
A younger Elena stood beside a dark-haired man outside a bakery. Charles knew the man. He had spoken to him that morning about a hotel lease.
He turned back slowly.
"Why do you have a photograph with Thomas Hale?"
Elena's face crumpled.
"Because Hale was Marianne's maiden name. He changed it when he started his career."
Charles looked again at the man who had advised him for fifteen years.
"My lawyer?"
"Yes," Elena whispered. "Your brother."
