"The Maid Who Made the Mafia Boss Stay" Chapter 3
The Name She Carried
The following afternoon, Bennett came home carrying a paper bag from a bakery in Highland Park.
His mother had once liked their lemon cake. He remembered that much.
He found Clara in the kitchen cutting a slice of plain toast into quarters.
"She hasn't wanted anything rich today," she said when she saw the bag.
"I can put it away."
Clara looked at him as if she had expected an argument.
He set the cake beside the refrigerator. "How is she?"
"She wants to sit outside. The nurse said a short visit would be fine."
"It's cold."
"She knows. She's been complaining about the weather for the last twenty minutes."
He pictured his mother supervising the seasons and almost smiled.
They took Eleanor onto the sheltered terrace. Bennett found a blanket, and Clara quietly exchanged it for another before he could unfold it.
"What's wrong with that one?"
"The edge scratches her."
He ran his thumb along the blue stitching.
For years, he had remembered details about men he distrusted. Their habits, their debts, what frightened them. He had somehow failed to learn which blanket hurt his mother's skin.
Eleanor ate one quarter of the toast and declared the garden disgraceful.
"You told the gardener not to touch the roses," Bennett reminded her.
"Then he should have argued."
Clara laughed. "I'll let him know you've changed his job description."
A gust lifted the corner of the blanket. Bennett caught it before it slipped, and his mother tucked her fingers beneath his hand.
They stayed until she grew sleepy.
Afterward, while the nurse helped Eleanor settle, Bennett found Clara folding the terrace blanket in the hall.
"Do you ever take a day off?"
"Friday. Usually."
"Usually?"
"Mrs. Hale had a bad night last week. I swapped a shift."
"Make sure those hours are recorded."
Her hands stopped.
"They are."
"I wasn't suggesting otherwise."
"Then you can ask Mrs. Alvarez. She handles the schedule."
He had offered what he considered practical help. She looked as if he had inspected the price tag on something precious.
"You don't like me very much," he said.
Clara folded the blanket once more, though it was already neat.
"You don't know me well enough to care."
He should have let her go. Instead, he stepped aside so she could pass and said, "I'd like that to change."
She met his eyes.
For a second, he saw something beneath her composure that he couldn't name.
Marcus appeared at the end of the corridor, carrying a folder. "Croft is downstairs. He wants your signature before he leaves."
Clara's gaze moved to the folder.
"Tell Richard to wait," Bennett said.
"He says the harbor contracts need to go through tonight."
"Then he can wait tonight."
Marcus nodded and left.
Clara was still looking down the corridor.
"You know Richard?" Bennett asked.
"I've seen him here."
"You looked as if you recognized his name."
"I recognize a lot of names in this house."
He waited. People generally filled his silences. Clara did not.
From the bedroom, Eleanor called for her.
Clara went immediately.
Bennett stood alone with the uncomfortable certainty that she had chosen every word.
That evening, Richard Croft mentioned the staff payroll while Bennett signed the contracts.
"Your mother has become rather attached to one of the girls."
Bennett put down his pen.
"Her name is Clara."
Richard smiled. "Of course. Just make sure the boundaries remain clear. Vulnerable people can be very generous."
Bennett looked at the older man until the smile disappeared.
"If you have an accusation, make it."
"Merely a concern."
"Then consider it addressed."
He sent Richard away.
Upstairs, Clara was buttoning her coat outside Eleanor's room. A bus timetable showed on her cracked phone screen.
"I'll have someone drive you," Bennett said.
"I've got a ride home."
"The bus?"
"It works surprisingly well when you catch it."
"Clara."
She looked exhausted. He wanted to help her and was beginning to understand that wanting did not make him welcome.
"Have I done something to you?"
The question stopped her.
Behind him, his mother's door opened. Eleanor sat in her wheelchair with a shawl around her shoulders.
"Tell him," she said softly.
Clara's face went still.
"Not like this."
"Then let him ask you properly."
Bennett turned back to Clara.
She gripped the strap of her bag.
"Eight years ago, you promised my mother half a million dollars after my father died," she said. "She never received a cent."
