"The Maid Who Made the Mafia Boss Stay" Chapter 6
A Debt Has a Name
Richard Croft asked to see Bennett alone.
Bennett received him in the downtown office on a Tuesday afternoon, with the outside attorney seated beside him.
Richard stopped in the doorway.
"I thought this was a private matter."
"Sit down," Bennett said.
The file between them was thinner than Richard seemed to expect.
There was no need for a mountain of paper. A payment authorization, a copy of a receipt, records of the destination account, and Rose Reed's letters were enough to begin the conversation.
Richard adjusted his glasses.
"You have to understand how chaotic those weeks were. Your father had just died."
"I remember."
"We were trying to preserve the organization."
Bennett slid the receipt toward him.
"Did Rose Reed sign that?"
Richard did not look down.
"She was compensated in other ways."
"Name one."
The attorney let the silence continue.
At last, Richard leaned back.
"Her husband knew what kind of men he worked for. Nobody forced him to be at that harbor."
Bennett felt the familiar, cold clarity that used to precede decisions other men regretted.
He could have frightened Richard into saying anything.
Instead, he kept his hands flat on the desk.
"His daughter has been washing the sheets in my house while you ate at my table. You will not sit here and blame him."
Richard's eyes shifted toward the door.
"I've been loyal to this family for thirty years."
"And you used that to make sure no one checked."
Bennett stood. The meeting was over.
Richard's access had already been suspended. The review would continue, and the attorney would handle the records and referrals. There would be no private bargain to make the matter disappear.
As Richard left, he paused beside Bennett.
"You're doing all this over a maid?"
Bennett stepped close enough that Richard finally looked afraid.
"Her name is Clara Reed. Don't contact her again."
That evening, Bennett found Clara in the small sitting room off the kitchen. Her attorney had called ahead. The folder on the table was hers, not a surprise he had arranged.
"They explained the payment," she said.
He nodded.
The original benefit, the years it had been withheld, and additional compensation had been set out separately. She would not have to stay employed by the Hales to receive any of it.
Clara turned a page.
"I keep thinking about our old kitchen. There was a drawer that wouldn't close because the wood had swollen. My mother used to hit it with her hip."
Bennett remained standing.
"I'm sorry."
She nodded without looking up.
"I know you are. But I keep wondering whether she'd still be here. And there's no answer you can give me."
"No. There isn't."
Clara closed the folder.
For a while, the only sound was the refrigerator starting in the next room.
"You were twenty-four when your father died," she said.
"Old enough to ask whether the money had arrived."
"You trusted him."
"I did."
"I believe you didn't know."
The relief hurt almost as much as the accusation had.
"You don't have to decide anything else tonight," he said.
"I'm not leaving your mother."
He looked at her then.
"I wasn't asking you to stay."
"I know. I'm telling you."
He sat opposite her, leaving the folder untouched between them.
After a moment, she asked, "Did he apologize?"
"No."
Clara exhaled. "I thought it might matter if he did."
"Would it?"
She considered that.
"Probably not tonight."
When her eyes filled, he moved the tissue box within reach. He did not touch her until she held out her hand.
He took it carefully.
Her fingers tightened around his, and he stayed until she was ready to let go.
