"My Cold CEO Can Feel Everything I Do to His Pen" Chapter 15 — I Choose You, Not the Company
The emergency board meeting began at eight thirty on a Monday morning.
Alexander Sterling arrived with three folders, a legal adviser, and the calm expression that usually meant somebody was about to have a very bad day.
Richard Vale was already seated.
“Are we really doing this?” Richard asked. “Over a junior employee?”
Alexander stopped beside his chair. “We're doing this because our systems were compromised and a witness was threatened. You should know the difference.”
The board chair, Evelyn Ward, called the meeting to order. Nadia Brooks presented the findings from her independent investigation, carefully distinguishing verified facts from unresolved questions.
A malicious login page had captured Jamie’s credentials. A privileged administrative token had then been used to access restricted contract materials. The token was assigned to a system controlled by Richard’s office.
Richard interrupted repeatedly.
“Circumstantial.”
“Then you will appreciate the chance to respond,” Nadia said. “Please allow me to finish.”
She displayed the preserved request to delete archived access records, the altered contract approvals, and Ethan’s signed witness statement.
Richard’s lawyer whispered urgently to him.
Alexander sat still, hands folded, resisting the impulse to look triumphant. Jamie deserved a proper process, not a theatrical revenge scene.
When Nadia finished, Evelyn announced that Richard would be placed on administrative leave pending external review and potential referral to authorities.
The decision passed with only one abstention.
Richard pushed back his chair. “You'll regret choosing that boy over this company.”
Alexander met his eyes. “I chose an investigation over a cover-up. If that threatens the company, our problem is bigger than one employee.”
Richard left without another word.
Afterward, Evelyn asked Alexander to remain.
“Your relationship with Jamie Parker creates governance concerns,” she said.
“I agree.”
She blinked. “You do?”
“I should have disclosed it sooner. I should also have ensured he was informed of the process before the meeting. I accept an independent review of my conduct.”
“And if the board decides you should step back from certain decisions?”
“Then I'll step back.”
Evelyn studied him. “You're different lately.”
Alexander considered the comment. “Someone told me that being in charge doesn't make me right.”
“Sounds like someone worth listening to.”
Across town, Jamie was making coffee when Nadia called with an update. She explained that the investigation had cleared him of responsibility for the unauthorized transfer.
A formal letter would follow. He would be offered reinstatement with back pay for any affected period and an opportunity to discuss remedies with an independent representative.
Jamie gripped the counter. “So I can stop being the office criminal?”
“You were never convicted of anything, Mr. Parker.”
“I'm aware. My anxiety missed the memo.”
Nadia’s voice softened. “You were right to preserve the evidence.”
Jamie thanked her and ended the call. Then he sat on the kitchen floor and cried, quietly and without elegance.
Oliver found him there five minutes later.
“Is it bad?” Oliver asked.

Jamie shook his head. “I'm cleared.”
Oliver sat beside him and pulled him into a hug.
“You idiot,” he said affectionately. “You could have told me before making me think somebody died.”
“I was busy having an emotional breakdown.”
“Schedule the next one.”
Jamie laughed through his tears.
At noon, Alexander requested permission to call. Jamie agreed to meet at a small restaurant away from the office.
Alexander arrived first, wearing a gray sweater instead of a suit. Jamie nearly walked past him.
“Wow,” Jamie said. “The corporate robot has casual mode.”
“Apparently.”
“Does it cost extra?”
“Only for you.”
They sat by the window. For a while they talked about the investigation and what came next. Alexander explained the board review, the compliance changes, and the fact that Jamie’s position would no longer report through his office.
“I don't want you thinking this is a reward for dating me,” Alexander said.
“Good. Because I earned my job before I ever kissed you.”
“I know.”
Jamie stirred his coffee. “I don't know if I want to return.”
Alexander's face tightened, but he didn't interrupt.
“The company used to feel like a place where I could build something,” Jamie continued. “Now I walk past that building and remember being accused in front of people who barely knew me.”
“You don't owe the company your return.”
Jamie glanced up. “You're really saying that?”
“Yes.”
“Who are you, and what have you done with Alexander Sterling?”
“I've been asking myself something similar.”
They laughed, and the sound made Jamie's chest ache in a better way.
Alexander leaned forward. “I want to apologize for something beyond the meeting.”
“That's a long list.”
“I know. I used my position as an excuse to control situations that frightened me. I expected you to trust me without giving you the information you needed to choose.”
Jamie was quiet.
“I don't want that kind of relationship,” Alexander said. “Not with you.”
“Neither do I.”
“Then tell me what you need.”
“Time. Honesty. The freedom to disagree with you without wondering if it will affect my job.”
“You have all three.”
Jamie raised an eyebrow. “You can't grant me freedom like it's a parking permit.”
Alexander winced. “Fair point.”
“See? Progress.”
After lunch they walked along the river. Jamie told Alexander about the weeks of fear, the endless timeline spreadsheets, and the humiliation of needing Oliver to remind him to eat.
Alexander listened. He did not offer solutions until Jamie asked for one.
At the pedestrian bridge, Jamie stopped.
“I still love you,” he said. “Which is inconvenient, considering how often I want to throw you into traffic.”
Alexander’s breath caught. “You love me?”
“Don't make me repeat it. I have a reputation.”
Alexander reached for his hand, then waited. Jamie threaded their fingers together.
“I love you, too,” Alexander said.
Jamie looked at their joined hands. “That sounded suspiciously easy.”

“Nothing about loving you has been easy.”
“Rude.”
“But it has been worth it.”
Jamie pulled him into a kiss, brief and warm, with passing cyclists and afternoon traffic around them.
Later, Alexander made a public statement confirming the independent findings, the governance review, and his personal relationship with Jamie. He avoided discussing Jamie’s private feelings or suggesting that the relationship had influenced the investigation.
He expected criticism. Some came. But the company also began repairing the procedures that had allowed the breach to happen.
That evening, Jamie visited Alexander’s apartment for dinner. They cooked badly, argued about pasta, and burned the garlic bread.
“This is the worst Italian restaurant in Manhattan,” Jamie declared.
“The chef has a difficult customer.”
“The chef has a smoke detector.”
They ate anyway.
When Alexander asked whether Jamie would return to Sterling Group, Jamie set down his fork.
“There's something I haven't told you.”
Alexander waited.
“I interviewed for a creative director position at another company,” Jamie said. “They offered it to me this morning.”
The room went very still.
Before bed, Jamie opened the formal clearance letter on his laptop. The language was dry, full of procedural conclusions and dates, but he read every line. His name appeared beside the words no evidence of misconduct.
Alexander sat beside him without looking over his shoulder.
“Would you like me to read it?” he asked.
“No. I think I needed to read it myself.”
“Of course.”
Jamie saved a copy to his personal records and closed the screen.
“It's strange,” he said. “I thought the moment they cleared me, everything would feel normal again.”
“Does it?”
“Not yet.”
Alexander nodded. “Then we don't have to pretend.”
Jamie leaned against him. There was no miraculous solution, only someone willing to remain while the difficult feelings passed. For now, that was enough.
“I think I'm going to leave Sterling Group.”
