"His Guard Dog Chose Me" Chapter 5
What He Didn't Say
Clara came back the following Monday.
Before deciding, she'd spoken to her agency, Marcus, and Price. Security procedures had changed. She had a direct emergency contact and confirmation that any schedule change would require verification on both sides.
Adrian hadn't called to influence her decision. He'd sent one message on Friday.
“Titan tried to relocate your armchair. Marcus intervened on structural grounds.”
She'd replied with a photograph of the folding chair in her kitchen.
“If he needs furniture, I can offer something lighter.”
His answer had arrived almost immediately.
“You actually eat dinner sitting on that?”
There was no new chair waiting outside her apartment on Monday. Clara considered its absence an important victory.
Adrian's recovery was progressing. He moved around the house more easily, although he tried to do too much whenever somebody mentioned a meeting.
Titan still needed follow-up care. On Wednesday, his vet came to examine a cut the dog insisted on licking.
Clara held the leash while Adrian sat beside him. He wore a black shirt with the sleeves folded back. A tattoo started at his wrist and disappeared beneath the fabric. She realized she'd been looking too long when the vet asked her for a towel.
“Will he put weight on it normally?” Adrian asked.
“He's healing well. We'll continue his care and keep an eye on it.”
“What about the restlessness? He woke up three times last night.”
The vet asked about routines, his environment, and behavioral follow-up. Adrian answered every question. He knew how often Titan had eaten, which room he'd slept in, and what sound had made him leave his bed.
Clara had never seen him so willing to take instructions.
Afterward, she found him in the enclosed garden with Titan lying between his feet.
“You wrote everything down,” she observed.
Adrian lifted the notepad.
“If I forget something, he'll tell the vet.”
Clara took the chair beside him. It was cold enough that the warmth of the coffee cup felt good between her palms.
“Marcus said you found him after a fire.”
Adrian looked at Titan before answering.
“A warehouse we leased. They discovered the manager had been keeping dogs there. The firefighters were already finished when I arrived.”
He rubbed his thumb over the small scar near his hand.
“Titan was hiding behind a stack of materials. Nobody knew there was still an animal inside.”
“Did he let you come close?”
“He bit me.”
She looked at the scar. Adrian nodded.
“You kept the evidence.”
“It was a memorable introduction.”
The dog released a long sigh without opening his eyes.
“They said he might never adjust to living in a house,” Adrian continued. “For a month, he'd only sleep by the back door. I'd put his bed there, and he'd lie next to it. On the floor.”
“How long did that last?”
“Until I stopped moving him where I thought he ought to be.”

Clara turned toward him. He met her gaze and gave a small smile.
“Go ahead. I heard what I just said.”
She laughed into her coffee.
That afternoon, a storm darkened the house before her shift ended. Thunder made Titan lift his head. A second crash sent him beneath Adrian's desk.
It wasn't the study from the night of the attack. Even so, Clara felt the back of her neck tighten when she found him there.
Adrian crouched too slowly to hide the discomfort. She brought him a low chair and retrieved the dog's blanket.
“You don't have to fold yourself in half to prove you're fine.”
“I'm not proving anything. I'm trying to reach my dog.”
“You're capable of doing both at the same time.”
He accepted the chair.
She stayed on the other side of the desk, close enough for Titan to sense her, while Adrian talked to him. They didn't drag him out of his hiding place. The thunder faded, the rain settled into a steady rhythm, and eventually he emerged on his own.
Clara let out a breath and realized she'd been holding it.
Adrian noticed.
“You don't like storms either?”
She could have chosen an easy answer.
“Some noises have been getting to me since that night. I thought I was over it.”
He went still.
“Have you talked to someone?”
“A colleague. And I've booked an appointment through my insurance. I just don't like feeling this way.”
“What way?”
“Like my body's reacting to something that's already over.”
Adrian looked down at Titan.
“Mine does that too.”
He didn't explain immediately. Clara waited.
“Sometimes I wake up and don't know where he is. Even when he's right beside the bed. I have to look.”
It was a small confession in words and a large one in the effort she heard between them.
“You can tell me when that happens,” she said.
“So you can work off the clock?”
“So you don't have to pretend all the time. I'm not volunteering to be on call.”
He looked at her again.
“You draw those lines pretty easily.”
“No. I usually notice too late when I've blurred them. I'm trying to get better.”
Rain pattered against the windows. Titan lay at their feet, filling the space where their legs almost met.
Clara told him she'd started working too much when her mother got sick. After her mother died, she'd kept the habit of taking every shift available. There was comfort in a full day. The trouble came when she no longer knew what to do with a free afternoon.
Adrian didn't claim to understand exactly. He didn't offer money, a vacation, or an immediate solution. He asked what her mother had liked.
Clara found herself describing a woman who bought used novels and wrote little complaints in the margins when she disliked the ending.
“She would have hated you,” Clara said before thinking.
Adrian raised an eyebrow.
“What a welcoming prospect.”
“At first. Then she'd have asked if you were eating properly. And hated your answer.”
He smiled. Clara missed her mother in a way that, for the first time in a long while, didn't leave her entirely alone.
The power flickered once without going out. Marcus appeared to say the teams were checking the estate. Price texted to clear the end of her shift. Nora arrived before the rain got worse.
Clara agreed to wait a little before leaving.
In the library, she pulled a blanket over her legs on the couch. Titan had abandoned it to sleep by the fireplace. Adrian picked up a book. She asked if it was any good.
“Nobody's written complaints in the margins yet.”
She smiled and closed her eyes for a moment.
When she woke, the rain had eased. A dark jacket lay over her shoulders, warm and carrying Adrian's quiet, clean scent. The blanket had slipped to her feet.
He was still in the armchair, reading under a low lamp.
She moved. He closed the book with a finger between the pages.
“You can sleep a little longer. Marcus is still arranging the car.”
“You stayed here the whole time?”
“I was comfortable.”
Clara looked at the chair, too small for his long legs.
He followed her gaze and sighed.
“Clara, accept a polite lie once in a while.”
She drew the jacket closer and smiled at him through the last of her sleepiness.
