"His Guard Dog Chose Me" Chapter 11
My Own Key
Three months later, Clara came home with aching feet and a lemon tart listing dangerously inside its box.
On the way, Adrian had texted to ask when she'd finish at the clinic. When she'd explained that a colleague needed to complete an appointment, he'd said he'd keep dinner warm.
It was a small change, until Clara remembered how that conversation would have gone in the beginning.
She parked in the space she'd chosen near the kitchen. She'd begun driving more often after they reviewed the temporary security measures. There were still precautions around the house and their travel. Now she understood the reasons and took part in the decisions.
The case against Victor was moving forward. The threats had been documented, the woman who'd posed as a nurse had been identified, and the investigation had reached the people involved in both attempts. Clara had given her statement with an attorney beside her, then gone back to work the next day.
She no longer had to discover developments through Adrian's closed expression. He told her what mattered, even when the conversation was unpleasant. She'd learned to ask without expecting the worst from every silence.
Inside her bag, between her badge and an almost-finished lipstick, lay her key to the house.
Weeks earlier, she'd found it on the kitchen table in an open envelope. Adrian had placed a simple floor plan of a room she'd said she liked beside it.
“I want you here,” he'd said. “You can think about it. You can try it. You can tell me you'd rather keep your apartment. I'll still want to have dinner with you.”
She'd taken the envelope and left the decision for another day.
Then she'd returned with two suitcases, an unnecessary coffee maker, and a box of her mother's books. She hadn't given up the apartment until she was certain she wanted to.
Now she turned the key, pushed open the door, and heard Titan's paws before she saw him.
He appeared carrying a new blue toy, already missing one end. He stopped in front of her and dropped it on the rug.
“You destroyed another one? I've been gone eight hours.”
Titan looked at the pastry box.
“No. This isn't for you.”
Adrian appeared in the hall with his sleeves rolled up and a dish towel over one shoulder.
The first thing he did was take the box. The second was kiss her.
Clara let her bag slide onto the entry bench and held on to his shirt for another second.
“I brought dessert.”
“I noticed. I'm trying to decide whether that means you don't trust mine.”
She tilted her head.
“Did you make dessert?”
“No. But I could have.”
She laughed and rested her face against his chest. He placed his chin over her hair without immediately asking how her day had gone.
Sometimes she needed that minute before the words. He'd learned to wait.

Titan pushed the toy against her shoe.
“He hasn't learned,” she murmured.
“He thinks you need exercise.”
“I walked so much today, I may be missing the soles of my feet.”
Adrian drew back just far enough to look at her.
“Then come sit down. I'll finish setting the table.”
In the kitchen, she found two glasses, cold water, and a dish of pasta ready to go in the oven. There was a spot of sauce near the stove and a book open on the counter.
She recognized the cover before she reached it.
It was her mother's recipe notebook, packed with the books because she'd never known quite where to put it. A folded piece of paper marked a simple cake recipe.
“Were you looking through the box?” she asked.
Adrian glanced at the notebook.
“You asked me to find that novel for you to take to the clinic. This was beside it. I left the box in your office.”
Clara traced the note in the margin. The slanted handwriting was so familiar it could have belonged to a message she'd received yesterday.
“More lemon. Don't be stingy.”
She smiled, her eyes beginning to sting.
“She always wrote things like that.”
“I thought we could try it Saturday. If you'd like.”
Clara nodded. He didn't add anything while she slowly turned the page.
She found a place for the notebook there and then, on a shelf away from the stove's steam. She set it beside his cookbooks and looked at it for a moment.
Then she took off her shoes.
Over dinner, she told him about a patient who'd spent the week swearing he hated his new cane and now accused everyone of hiding it. Adrian told her Marcus had declined a meeting after discovering Titan's appointment was at the same time.
“He said the dog follows recommendations better,” Adrian added.
“Marcus is right.”
“You could pretend to be on my side.”
Clara stretched a foot beneath the table and touched his leg.
“I am. That makes my criticism more useful.”
After they ate, she helped put away the leftovers. Not out of obligation, or to prove she'd earned her place there. Adrian washed the baking dish while she debated starting a series neither of them would have the patience to finish.
There was work in the morning. An appointment for her the following week. A meeting for him that would run late on Thursday. They made plans around those things, leaving room for each other without letting either life fill every available space.
When they reached the living room, Titan was already asleep with half his body outside the expensive bed Adrian had insisted on buying.
Clara sat on the couch and made room. Adrian turned off the overhead light, came over, and lifted her feet so he could sit beneath them.
He began rubbing one heel.
“Are you trying to get another piece of tart?” she asked.
“I own the refrigerator. I don't need to negotiate.”
“We own the refrigerator. And the last piece has my name on it.”
He looked so pleased she forgot the joke.
“What?”
“You said we.”
She felt a smile spread before she could answer.
“I brought my coffee maker too. I thought you'd understood.”
He leaned down to kiss her. Clara held his face, taking her time with the short stubble against her palm.
That first night, she'd strained to detect a breath she could barely see. Now she knew the sound of him falling asleep, the way he reached for her hand in the car, the low voice in which he asked whether she wanted company.
“I understood,” he said, still close to her mouth. “I just like hearing it.”
She drew him closer.
In the entryway, her key lay on the console beside his. The door was closed. She knew she could open it whenever she wanted.
Titan sighed on the rug, deeply asleep.
Clara settled against Adrian and chose to stay.
