"The Alpha’s Nanny, His Lost Mate" Chapter 1
The Wrong Door
The man waiting in the bridal suite was not my fiancé, and my best friend was holding the door open for him.
I stopped outside the sitting room with one hand against the wallpaper. A minute earlier I had been able to hear the elevator cables moving behind the wall. Now I could barely hear my own breathing.
Inside me, where my wolf usually stirred like something sleeping beneath snow, there was nothing.
“She drank all of it,” Celeste said.
The stranger laughed. His cuff links caught the light. I recognized the red hawk engraved on them: Lord Varrick’s household, wealthy enough to buy soldiers and cruel enough to need them.
“And Mercer understands what he is offering?”
“Mercer understands perfectly.” Julian emerged from the bedroom, straightening his cuffs. “An introduction to your employer. Protection for my administration of the Ellis properties. That was our agreement.”
Our wedding was in twelve days.
I looked down at the glass in my hand. Celeste had brought it to me herself, smiling as she tucked a loose strand of hair behind my ear. To Evelyn’s daughter, she had said. Your mother would be so proud.
My mother had died with her sword in her hand. My father had died beside her. I had spent seven months trying to survive their absence, and these two had patiently taught me where to put my trust.
“What if she refuses?” the stranger asked.
Julian’s answer came easily. “She has never learned how.”
Something inside me went cold enough to cut through the spreading heat.
I set the glass on the carpet instead of letting it fall. Then I took off my shoes.
Celeste saw me as I turned.
For half a second we simply stared at each other. Her mouth opened. I waited, absurdly, for her to say there had been a mistake.
“Julian,” she called. “She’s outside.”
I ran.
My heel caught the edge of a service trolley. A porcelain cup shattered behind me. I hit the stairwell door shoulder first and stumbled down a flight, clutching the banister when my knees threatened to give.
My wolf did not answer.
At twenty-one, I had never completed a shift. I could smell rain before clouds gathered, hear a lie in the catch of a breath, close a shallow cut before dinner. My mother had called those things a beginning. Julian had called them insufficient.
Tonight even those small gifts were disappearing.
Footsteps struck the stairs above me.
“Nora, stop behaving like this.” Julian sounded annoyed, as though I had embarrassed him at dinner. “You are not safe on your own.”
I shoved through another door into a quiet corridor.
Every suite had a brass number. Every handle I tried stayed locked. The last door stood slightly open, a room-service tray outside it.
I went through without knocking.
A man turned from the window.

He was tall, black-haired, wearing an open white shirt with his sleeves rolled to his forearms. A dark pattern of old pack markings followed one wrist beneath the fabric. I noticed those details because looking at his face was difficult.
His eyes had gone gold.
Power filled the room. An Alpha’s presence was something every wolf recognized before language: the pressure in the lungs, the instinct to lower the head.
Yet the quiet place inside me moved.
One faint, impossible flicker.
“Please,” I said. “Don’t let them take me.”
He came toward me, then stopped when I flinched.
“Who gave you wolfsbane suppressants?”
Behind me, the door slammed back against the wall.
Julian entered first. He looked at the man, and the color left his face so quickly I almost failed to recognize him.
“My apologies, Alpha. My fiancée has been drinking.”
The stranger looked at me. “Do you want to leave with him?”
“No.” My voice shook. “He put something in my drink.”
“She’s distressed,” Julian said. “Her parents died recently. I can explain.”
The Alpha moved between us.
“Then explain from the corridor.”
Julian reached for my arm.
The sound that came from the stranger’s chest was low and unmistakably animal. Julian froze with his hand suspended in the air.
“Leave,” the Alpha said.
Julian obeyed. He had never obeyed anything I said that quickly.
The door closed. The stranger locked it, made a short call, then put his phone down where I could see it.
“A healer is coming. You can sit by the door if you prefer.”
I chose the chair farthest from him. He brought water, a blanket, and the wastebasket I needed a minute later. When I was sick, he held the basket without pretending not to notice.
“I’m sorry,” I whispered.
“You didn’t poison yourself.”
The healer was a silver-haired woman who asked permission before touching my wrist. She checked my pupils, made me drink something bitter, and stayed until my hearing began to return.
I heard the rain first. Then the steady movement of the man across the room.
“The dangerous effects are passing,” she told me. “You will feel bruised tomorrow. Rest, drink water, and do not take anything else tonight.”
When she left, the clock above the fireplace showed almost two.
The Alpha took the armchair. “The bedroom locks from the inside. I’ll stay here.”
“Why are you helping me?”
He considered that as if it deserved an honest answer. “Because you asked. Because you were frightened. Do I need another reason?”
I pressed the glass between my palms. “People usually do.”
“Then tonight can be different.”
For a long time we talked. About small things first: the rain, the terrible hotel tea, the fact that I had left both shoes upstairs and only regretted one of them. He had a dry way of saying things that surprised a laugh out of me.
Later, when I shook again, it was from understanding what I had escaped.
He sat beside me only after I asked.
“You’re safe in this room,” he said.
I looked at his hand resting between us. A thin scar crossed one knuckle. I touched it. He went still.
“I know what I’m doing,” I said when he asked if I was certain. The room was clear now. My thoughts were my own. “I want something tonight to belong to me.”
He did not hurry me.
When I kissed him, he let me choose the distance. When he kissed me back, I felt that small warmth inside my chest lift toward him again.
For a few hours, held against his heartbeat, I stopped listening for footsteps.
Near dawn I woke alone in the bed, with him asleep in the chair beside it. At some point he had risen to bring me water and stayed there, one hand resting on the coverlet where mine had been.
I almost woke him.
Then I heard Celeste’s voice beyond the door, speaking quietly to someone farther down the corridor.
The terror came back whole.
I knew nothing about the man who had sheltered me, except that Julian feared him. In my world, powerful people traded favors. I could not bear to discover what my rescue might cost.
I found hotel slippers, took my coat, and wrote Thank you on a sheet of stationery. My hand trembled over the place where a name should have gone.
At the service stairs, I looked back once.
Then I left before anyone could decide my future for me again.
