"The Alpha’s Nanny, His Lost Mate" Chapter 14
The Wolf That Knew Him
Mara set my bottle of scentroot on her desk between us.
“How long?”
“Most of four years. Less during pregnancy.”
She did not scold me. She asked what dose I used, when I last took it, and whether my senses sharpened when I missed one.
“Sometimes I hear too much,” I admitted. “Sometimes I feel something trying to wake up.”
“And you take another dose.”
I looked down.
“Being noticed used to be dangerous.”
Her expression softened. “Your body has learned that very thoroughly.”
We agreed on a gradual reduction, with check-ins rather than a dramatic abandonment of the only defense I had trusted for years. My relief at that small kindness embarrassed me.
Ronan waited outside the treatment room. He stood when I emerged, then sat again when he realized I was not about to fall over.
“You can ask me,” I said.
“How was it?”
“Much less frightening than you looked.”
He glanced toward Mara’s door. “She once made me remain in bed for six days.”
“Did you deserve it?”
“Probably.”
We walked home through the herb garden behind the infirmary. With the morning dose reduced, smells arrived separately: crushed thyme, damp wool, woodsmoke from a distant cottage.
Ronan’s scent moved through them all.
I had known it without knowing what to call it. Pine bark after rain. Cold air over stone. Something warm beneath both that belonged only to him.
My wolf pressed forward.
I stumbled.
His hand caught my elbow, and the contact sent a rush of warmth along my arm.
For a moment I saw the garden with impossible clarity. The silver veins of a leaf. A beetle beneath the bench. Ronan’s pulse beating at the base of his throat.
His eyes turned gold.
“You feel it,” I said.
“Yes.”
“What is it?”
He let go of my elbow slowly, making certain I was steady.
“I think you know.”
I did. Every wolf child learned the stories: the scent you recognized without being taught, the answering pull beneath the breastbone, the rare companionship that could settle two wolves before their human selves understood why.
My mother had warned me that a bond was an invitation, not a guarantee of wisdom.
At twenty-one, I had thought she was trying to make me less disappointed that Julian inspired nothing of the sort.
“Mates,” I whispered.
Ronan nodded.
I sat on the bench because standing felt too public for the size of the moment.
He sat at the far end.
“Is that why you helped me at the hotel?”
“I helped before I understood what I felt.”
“But you felt it.”
“Something. Faintly. You were suppressed, frightened, ill. I would not have named it for you that night.”
I picked at a loose thread on my sleeve.
“And now?”
“Now I know the difference between wanting you safe and wanting you beside me. I want both.”

The words warmed me and frightened me. I had a daughter, a room, and people who knew my real name. I had barely begun to trust that those things could remain.
“What if I’m only easy to love because I belong here?” I asked. “Because I’m Maisie’s mother. Because your wolf recognizes mine.”
He looked at the path before answering.
“You’re not especially easy.”
I turned toward him, startled.
“You hide being tired until you can barely stand. You apologize to furniture when you bump into it. You insist on carrying every tray even when you’re already carrying our daughter.”
“That’s quite a list.”
“I’ve been paying attention.”
I smiled despite myself.
He leaned forward, forearms on his knees.
“I like that you wait for Maisie to finish her sentences. I like that you argue with the radio when the weather forecast is wrong. I like your laugh when you forget someone might hear it. I want to learn the things I don’t know yet.”
I looked down at my hands before he could see how much that hurt in a good way.
“You don’t have to decide anything on this bench,” he added.
We walked home without touching. Somehow that restraint made me more aware of him.
At lunch, Maisie demanded to know why we smelled like the same garden.
“We walked through it,” I said.
She narrowed her eyes. “Together?”
“Yes.”
“Without me?”
Ronan immediately found himself negotiating an afternoon excursion to compensate for this betrayal.
That evening I discovered my trial employment contract on the desk in my room. A note from Ruth asked me to review the closure of the position and the return of the agency’s placement fee. Ronan had included a separate household agreement: my private room, access to funds of my own, and acknowledgment of my place as Maisie’s mother.
I took it downstairs.
“You’re ending the job.”
“You’re her mother. You shouldn’t need my permission or a wage to spend time with her.”
“I still want to work.”
“Then we’ll find work you want. Or you can take time first.”
“And if I wanted a house nearby?”
His face tightened before he controlled it.
“Then we would find one close enough that Maisie could visit easily.”
I believed him. The answer had cost him something, and he had given it anyway.
“I don’t want to move,” I said.
He let out a breath I had not realized he was holding.
“Good.”
I sat across from him. “I would like to stop feeling as though every meal is part of an employment arrangement.”
“In that case, would you have dinner with me on Friday?”
I looked toward the hallway. “Maisie has dinner with us every night.”
“Ruth has agreed to give her supper and supervise a deeply controversial late bedtime. I was hoping to take you somewhere.”
“Are you asking me on a date?”
His mouth curved.
“I’m trying to. I appear to be out of practice.”
I thought of the bench, the open agreement, the way he had allowed me to choose distance without punishing me for it.
“Friday,” I said. “Yes.”
Before leaving, I looked again at the household agreement.
“There’s something else.”
He waited.
“I don’t want to keep asking for money when Maisie needs shoes, or when I want to buy something that has nothing to do with her. I know the estate should eventually be mine, but I don’t know how much of it is left.”
“Then tomorrow we meet with someone who can help you establish accounts in your own name. An advance against what is yours, with independent advice if you want it.”
“And until then?”
“We arrange access now. No permission needed for each purchase.”
I exhaled slowly. “I hate that I had to ask.”
“I should have asked what arrangement you wanted.”
I traced the edge of the paper.
“I want to take her somewhere and buy her an ice cream without feeling as though I should save the receipt to prove I’m useful.”
He looked at me for a long moment.
“Then we start there.”
The next afternoon I took Maisie to the village square with Ruth. I bought two ice creams and a notebook for myself. Maisie chose strawberry, changed her mind, and discovered she liked the lemon I had ordered better.
I let her trade.
At home Ronan asked whether we had enjoyed ourselves. He did not ask what anything cost.
