"The Alpha’s Nanny, His Lost Mate" Chapter 21
The Door Only I Could Open
Julian had chosen the place where I used to sit after lessons.
The old stone bench faced the chapel garden. As a girl I had hidden there with books I did not want to return to the library. Now Celeste stood beside it in a dark coat, watching our vehicles arrive.
There was no tenderness in seeing familiar faces at a familiar place. Only the discovery of how thoroughly a memory could be spoiled.
Gareth checked the chapel with two guards while Ronan and I remained outside. Neutral observers waited near the road, close enough to witness the transfer and far enough to avoid the old wards.
Julian held a leather packet.
“You brought an army.”
“I brought witnesses,” I said.
“You never used to be so suspicious.”
“You had more time to work on me then.”
His mouth tightened.
Celeste looked at the faint mark near my collar and immediately understood it.
“You move quickly.”
Ronan did not answer for me.
“You have my father’s compass,” I said to Julian. “Put it where I can see it.”
He laid it on the bench.
The bent hinge was real. So was the worn patch beneath my father’s thumb.
For a moment I could not hear anything except the old sound of him snapping it shut.
“Where did you get it?”
“Among things recovered after Blackthorn.”
“You told me nothing had been recovered.”
“You were grieving. There were matters you couldn’t manage.”
I looked at him until he glanced away.
Gareth returned and nodded. The lower passage was clear, though old damage had weakened the east wall. Our scouts remained outside watching the approaches.
We descended with lamps.
The door stood beneath an arch cut with roots and crescent moons. Someone had scored the stone around the lock with metal tools. Dark stains marked the floor.
I stopped.
“Whose blood?”
Julian looked irritated. “None of it worked.”
Ronan’s hand closed briefly around mine.
I forced myself to study the inscriptions Agnes had taught me to recognize. A keeper’s hand. A willing heart. The first phrase lay outside; the second repeated farther in, too faint for someone unfamiliar with the pattern to notice.
“The packet,” I said.
Julian held it out. Gareth received it and checked the contents before passing it to me.
There were letters authorizing a changed patrol route, correspondence between Mercer’s steward and Varrick’s quartermaster, and one page from my father’s field journal.
The handwriting made my vision blur.
Evelyn suspects the northern signal has been compromised. We cannot abandon the families at the pass. We ride before dawn.
“You knew,” I said.
Julian lifted one shoulder. “I knew the route would be open. I was not in command of the attack.”
Celeste hissed his name.
Too late.
I stared at her. “You helped him.”
“Your parents controlled everything,” she said, anger cracking through the careful surface. “Every appointment, every border agreement. You would have inherited a kingdom and spent it planting gardens.”

“So they deserved to die?”
She looked away.
Julian stepped toward the door. “We can spend all day discussing decisions nobody can undo, or you can open this and settle the estate.”
Grief moved through me, raw enough to weaken my knees.
Ronan leaned close.
“We can stop.”
I looked at the damaged threshold. At the compass in my hand. At the old door my mother had trusted me, somehow, to reach.
“No. We’ve come this far.”
I gave Gareth the documents. He withdrew to send copies to the observers above, as agreed. Julian protested. Ronan’s eyes turned gold, and the protest ended.
Then I stepped forward.
Using the small blade Agnes had given me, I made a shallow cut across my thumb and pressed it to the crescent in the stone.
The pendant warmed against my chest.
Silver light ran through the carved roots. Beneath my feet, something vast and old answered.
The door opened inward.
Julian pushed past before anyone could stop him.
Inside, light bloomed over shelves, chests, sealed records, and a circle of pale stone set in the floor. At its center stood a low basin and a carved seat.
My mother’s voice filled the room.
“If you have reached this place, Nora, I hope I am standing beside you and complaining that you forgot your gloves.”
I made a sound I could not control.
The voice came from the pendant, answering the sanctuary. A stored echo, Agnes had suggested might exist. I had not understood how much it would sound like her.
“If I am not, then listen carefully, my darling. You have never disappointed me by taking your time.”
Ronan’s hand settled at my back.
“The strength in this family has always been asked to arrive before the person carrying it is ready. I wanted you to have more time than I did. That is why the pendant guards the door within you until your wolf can bear its opening.”
I touched the stone at my throat.
All those years I had mistaken protection for failure.
“The sanctuary holds what our people entrusted to us. Food reserves, medicine stores, the means to restore the northern wards, and wealth enough to rebuild when rebuilding is needed. You may choose to keep it. You may choose another worthy keeper. Your life is not a debt you owe the dead.”
My knees gave way beside the basin.
“Whatever you choose,” my mother said, “you are my daughter. I am proud of you already.”
The echo ended.
For several breaths, no one moved.
Then Julian said, “Where is the control seal?”
I looked up.
He was staring past the shelves toward the inner circle, his face hungry in the silver light.
