"The Alpha’s Nanny, His Lost Mate" Chapter 22
My Mother’s Daughter
“Step away from the circle,” I said.
Julian ignored me.
He crossed the first ring, reached for the basin, and struck an invisible barrier hard enough to stagger backward. Blue-white light snapped between the carved stones.
Celeste caught his arm.
“Let her do it.”
The way she said it brought back a hundred small arrangements. Let Nora host the dinner. Let Nora apologize to the council clerk. Let Nora give something up so everyone else could be comfortable.
I rose slowly.
“You’ve received access to nothing,” I told them. “The estate will be examined. The documents you gave us will be investigated.”
Julian’s eyes moved toward the passage.
Ronan had already placed himself between them and the outer door.
“You gave your account before witnesses,” he said. “You can answer further questions upstairs.”
Julian laughed once, without humor.
“You think I came here without insurance?”
From above came the crash of stone against stone.
Dust fell from the arch. A shout carried down the passage, followed by the unmistakable snarl of wolves meeting in anger.
Ronan looked at Gareth.
“The east approach,” Gareth said, listening to his earpiece. “They’ve moved earlier than expected. Our people have them at the ridge.”
We had planned for hired wolves. Knowing they were there did not stop my body from reacting to the sound.
My wolf surged toward the door.
Ronan’s hand brushed mine. Through the bond I felt his nearness, the steady fact of him. No words. Enough to help me breathe.
“Stay behind the inner threshold,” he said. “I’ll hold the passage.”
It was an agreed position, not a command invented in fear. I nodded.
Gareth moved to secure Celeste. She dropped as if fainting, and something small flashed in her hand.
A capsule broke against the floor.
The smell reached me first: bitter metal and bruised leaves.
Suppressant dust.
I covered my mouth and pulled back. Gareth dragged his sleeve over his face. Julian threw himself toward me through the widening haze.
Ronan caught him before he reached the basin.
The force of the collision sent a lamp crashing. Shadows leaped up the walls.
Celeste slipped past Gareth and grabbed my wrist.
“It always has to be difficult with you.”
I twisted, but she drove her nails into the healing cut on my thumb. Pain flashed up my arm.
She forced my hand toward a carved groove outside the circle.
The sanctuary responded to the blood.
Light rushed through the floor, stronger now, pulling at the warmth beneath my ribs. I gasped as my wolf struggled against the remnants of the dust.
“There,” Celeste said. “You see? You can be useful.”
For one terrible second I was twenty-one again, standing outside a hotel room while people decided what I was worth.
Then I felt the cloth wolf tucked inside my coat.
Maisie had pressed it into my hands. He knows the way home.

I planted my feet.
Agnes had taught me to notice where I held my breath.
I let it out.
Celeste pulled harder. “Open it.”
“No.”
The word did not need shouting.
I stopped fighting the movement of the power and felt its direction instead. The outer door recognized blood. The circle was waiting for a choice.
My mother’s writing returned to me with perfect clarity.
A willing keeper.
I turned my palm upward, breaking Celeste’s grip at the angle Gareth had made me practice. She stumbled. I stepped inside the circle on my own.
The light changed.
It no longer pulled.
It waited.
I pressed my hand to the basin.
“I accept the keeping,” I said, using the words from the notebook. “For those who live here now. For those who come after.”
Warmth entered me like a second heartbeat.
For an instant I saw the northern woods as a web of roots and old paths. Broken boundary stones. Empty storehouses. Families whose names had been written into the sanctuary records generations before I was born.
The scale of it frightened me.
I almost pulled away.
Then I remembered my mother making bread with rolled sleeves, scolding my father for missing supper, laughing over broken fence posts she had apparently never told me about.
She had been a person carrying strength. I could be one, too.
I chose the smallest task I understood.
Close the sanctuary to those who would force its keeper.
The outer roots blazed silver.
Celeste struck the threshold as it rose between us. Not stone, not quite light: a boundary as certain as a wall. She stared at me through it, astonishment turning to fury.
Beyond her, Ronan forced Julian to his knees. Gareth had recovered enough to secure his hands. Shouting continued above, then began to recede.
“What have you done?” Julian demanded.
I could barely stand.
“Closed my door.”
He lunged against Ronan’s hold. The sanctuary rejected him with a sharp flare, driving him back onto the floor. Ronan stepped aside from the light and kept his grip, his face pale beneath the dust.
Celeste turned to me again.
“You don’t understand what you’re throwing away. With the vault and his pack, you could—”
“I understand exactly what I’m keeping.”
My voice shook. I did not mind.
Gareth took her into custody beside Julian. Their raised voices followed them up the passage until the distance swallowed the words.
The light inside me began to hurt.
I had opened more than I knew how to carry. My hands trembled, silver shining through the veins. I tried to lift them from the basin and could not.
Ronan came to the edge of the circle.
“Nora. Look at me.”
I did.
There was blood on his sleeve. I reached toward it in alarm, and the bond flared.
“A scrape,” he said. “I’m here. You need to stop holding all of it.”
“I don’t know how.”
He looked at the notebook lying beyond the threshold. Gareth had left it open beside my bag.
Ronan read the visible lines, then lifted his eyes.
“The keeper carries the key. The land carries the strength.”
I repeated it under my breath.
I had been holding the whole river when I needed only to open a gate.
Slowly, painfully, I let the warmth move outward. Through the basin. Into the roots. Back beneath the ground.
The blazing lines softened.
My knees failed.
Ronan caught me when the circle released me. I clung to him while the sanctuary settled into a low silver glow.
“I’ve got you,” he said.
I laughed weakly. “I think I need to sit down.”
“An excellent plan.”
Outside, Gareth’s voice reported that the attackers had been contained and the witnesses were safe. Ronan answered, then focused on me again.
“Can you tell me where it hurts?”
“Everywhere.”
“That is unhelpfully comprehensive.”
I pressed my face into his shoulder.
He carried me up the passage while I held my father’s compass and our daughter’s toy against my chest.
At the top, wind moved through the ruined chapel. The sky had cleared.
I looked back once at the place that had frightened me for years.
For the first time, I could imagine returning without fear.
