"She Polished My Shoes So I Wouldn’t Fire Her Mother" Chapter 1
The Shoe in Her Arms
“Who gave you permission to touch my shoes?”
The little girl went still on the polishing stool.
One bare foot curled around its lowest rung. The other hung in the air. She had a black brush in one hand and my Oxford in the other, and there was more polish on her face than on the leather.
I had meant to ask a question. From the way her mouth trembled, I might as well have pulled a gun.
“I’m helping Mama.”
She pressed the shoe against her pink pajamas. A broad black smear spread across the little rabbits printed on her chest.
“Where is your mother?”
“I can do it.” She pushed the brush across the toe with both fists. “I watched her.”
The shoe slid toward the edge of the stool. I caught it before it hit the floor.
She sucked in a breath and climbed down too quickly. Her foot missed the rung. My free hand caught her under the arm, and for one uncomfortable second she hung against my palm, scarcely heavier than the coat over my shoulder.
Then she was on her knees.
“I’ll clean that, too.”
She snatched a cloth from the floor and rubbed at a dark mark. The cloth was already covered in polish. Each frantic stroke made the stain wider.
“Stop.”
She dropped it.
At thirty-five, I had acquired a reputation that made armed men reconsider their choices. Apparently it also made a barefoot child forget how to breathe.
I set my shoe down and crouched, leaving space between us.
“You’re not in trouble.”
Her eyes moved to the spreading black mark.
“Neither is the floor,” I added.
She didn’t smile.
I had come home three days ahead of schedule after a miserable negotiation in New York, taken the side entrance to avoid a household reception, and followed the scrape of a brush into the old boot room. I had expected an empty house at this hour.
Instead, there was a child looking at me as though I held her entire life in one hand.
“What’s your name?”
“Zoe.”
“How old are you, Zoe?”
She held up three fingers. One slowly folded. She frowned and straightened it with her other hand.
“Three.”
“All right. Where’s your mama?”
“She’s in bed.” Zoe touched her forehead with a dirty finger. “She’s hot.”
“Does she know you’re here?”
Her eyes dropped.
There was my answer.
Beside the stool, a teddy bear leaned against a tin of wax. Its left ear had been repaired with blue thread. Someone had tucked a small washcloth around its shoulders.
“Were you supposed to be asleep?”
“Mama said the shoes had to be ready.”
“So you came to help.”
Zoe nodded hard enough to bounce her curls.
“She said she can’t lose her job.” Her voice thinned. “Please don’t make Mama leave.”
I glanced at the shoe, at the tiny brush marks running across its toe. Half the leather was dull, the other half buried under cream.

“Did somebody say she had to leave?”
Zoe rubbed her nose with her wrist. “Mama cried.”
That was all she knew. Mama had cried. The shoes needed cleaning. Therefore she had climbed out of bed and gone to work.
I took a clean cloth from the shelf.
“Can I wipe your hands?”
She considered me before offering one.
Her fingers were cold. Polish filled the creases of her palm. I wiped carefully, conscious that my knuckles were scarred and my grip could crush the little tin beside us.
“Your mother won’t lose her room because she’s sick.”
“Me, too?”
“You, too.”
“And Teddy?”
I looked at the bear.
“He can stay.”
She reached for him immediately.
When I stood, she took a step backward. I made myself slow down.
“Show me where your mother is.”
Zoe pointed toward the corridor, then looked at my shoe again.
“But it isn’t ready.”
“I have other shoes.”
She studied my stocking feet as though this was an extravagant claim.
I put on the pair beside the door. She waited with the bear tucked under her chin, then led me upstairs, one careful step at a time. Halfway up, she stopped and raised her arms.
I stared at her.
“My legs are tired.”
“Right.”
I lifted her. She held herself stiffly at first, then rested one small hand on my shoulder to keep her balance.
The staff apartment was at the end of the east corridor. Its door stood open. A woman lay on the bed under a thin blanket, still wearing her work shirt. A plastic cup of water sat beside her. The room smelled of laundry soap and overheated air.
“Hannah?” I recognized her now. Quiet. Dark hair pinned back. Always stepping aside before I entered a room.
Her eyes opened.
“Mr. Romano.”
She tried to sit so fast she swayed.
I put Zoe on the bed and caught the cup before her mother knocked it over.
“Stay where you are.”
“Zoe, what have you done?”
The child shrank against her bear.
“She came to get help,” I said.
Zoe looked up at me.
Hannah’s face was flushed, her lips dry. She held out her arms, and Zoe scrambled into them.
“I’m sorry. I meant to finish downstairs. I just needed an hour.”
“You need a doctor.”
“I can work in the morning.”
“That wasn’t what I said.”
She looked toward the door. I recognized the calculation: a strange man in her room, a child in her arms, a job she apparently couldn’t afford to lose.
I stepped back.
“I’ll call someone. May I?”
After a moment, she nodded.
I had my phone halfway out when Zoe pointed past my shoulder.
“The man came back.”
Through the window I could see a figure crossing the courtyard. Something long and black hung from his hand.
“What man?”
“He told Mama to go.” Zoe tightened her arms around Hannah. “I don’t want to go.”
The courtyard lights went out.
A second later, the bedroom went dark.
