"She Polished My Shoes So I Wouldn’t Fire Her Mother" Chapter 4
What I Had Promised
“No, sweetheart. I haven’t changed my mind.”
I took the notice from Victor and tore it in half.
“You’re staying,” I told Zoe. “Your mama needs to rest.”
She looked at the pieces in my hand, then up at Hannah, waiting for confirmation.
Hannah set down the suitcase.
Victor lowered his voice. “Dante, we should discuss this privately.”
“You were told not to come here.”
“A frightened employee has made allegations against a senior adviser. I assumed you would prefer—”
“You assumed incorrectly.”
Julian appeared at the top of the stairs.
“He used his old administrative access at the side entrance,” he said. “The gate detail never saw him.”
One look at my face stopped him from saying more.
“Take his house credentials,” I said. “His access to personnel files and security systems ends now. Have the office preserve everything associated with his accounts.”
Victor’s expression barely changed, but his thumb pressed hard against his briefcase clasp.
“You’re making a public scene.”
“You brought a dismissal notice to a sick woman’s bedroom.”
Two maids stood at the far end of the corridor. I turned toward them.
“Mrs. Bell, would you take Zoe to choose some breakfast? Ask her mother first.”
Hannah crouched, one hand braced on the suitcase.
“You can go with Mrs. Bell. I’ll be right here when you come back.”
“Pancakes?” Zoe asked.
“If there are pancakes.”
Zoe looked at me.
“I don’t run the kitchen,” I said.
Mrs. Bell, who had run it for nineteen years, made a small approving sound.
“There are pancakes.”
Only after the child disappeared around the corner did I face Victor again.
“You’re no longer authorized to act for this household.”
“Consider what you’re doing.”
“I am.”
“Your father understood the value of discretion.”
“My father is dead.”
The words came out colder than I intended. Victor heard the finality beneath them.
He looked at Hannah.
“You should be careful about the company you keep, Ms. Williams.”
She had been pale since I arrived. Now color rose in her cheeks.
“I was,” she said. “That’s why I kept quiet when you told me my daughter might lose her room. I won’t do it again.”
“You’ve misunderstood—”
“No. I remember what you said.”
Her voice shook on the last word. She didn’t take it back.
Julian stepped beside Victor.
“I’ll walk you out.”
I waited until they were gone before touching the suitcase handle.
“May I put this back?”
Hannah nodded. I carried it into her apartment and set it beside the wardrobe.
There were two shelves of folded clothes, three children’s books, and a plastic basket of toiletries. Four months of living in my house had fitted into one small case.
Hannah followed me inside and sat down before her knees gave out.
“You should have sent for me,” I said.
“He said you were in the meeting agreeing to it.”

“Next time, ask me.”
She looked at the doorway.
“You aren’t always available.”
I took a card from my wallet and wrote my personal number on the back.
“Now I am.”
She accepted it without speaking.
I should have left then. The matter was settled, the instructions given. Instead I noticed the way her hands remained pressed flat against her thighs.
“What else?”
Hannah gave a tired laugh. “You ask that like you expect a list.”
“I’d prefer one to guessing.”
“All right.” She lifted her eyes. “Please don’t make her work for your kindness.”
I stared at her.
“I haven’t asked her to do anything.”
“I know. But she thinks she fixed this by cleaning your shoes. She’s three. She’ll keep trying to be useful if she believes that’s why we’re allowed to stay.”
The hallway seemed unusually quiet.
“I’ll tell her.”
“You’ll have to show her, too.”
I nodded once.
“And I want to know what I owe you.”
“Nothing.”
“No extra hours later? No favors because you called a doctor?”
“No.”
She held my gaze until I felt the weight of how often she must have heard reassurance followed by an unspoken condition.
“I’ll put that in writing, too,” I said.
Her shoulders lowered a fraction.
We went through the arrangement together. Paid recovery time. Her job available when she was well. The room guaranteed for thirty days even if she chose to leave employment. More time by agreement, with an option to move somewhere away from the property if she preferred.
When I suggested an advance, she shook her head.
“Let me get better before we decide anything else.”
For once, I let an unfinished matter remain unfinished.
Downstairs, I gathered Mrs. Bell and the small household staff. I kept it brief. Illness was to be reported, not concealed. Nobody could threaten eviction on my behalf. Anyone claiming otherwise could be checked with me or Julian directly.
Mrs. Bell listened without expression.
Then she said, “Some of us have been trying to tell you that for years.”
“I’m listening now.”
“I hope so, sir.”
By the time I returned upstairs, Zoe had syrup on her chin and a pancake folded around nothing in her hand.
“For Mama,” she announced.
“She’ll appreciate it.”
She looked behind me, checking the corridor.
“The man went?”
“Yes.”
“Was Mama bad?”
“No. Your mama asked a question. She’s allowed to do that.”
Zoe thought about this while Mrs. Bell wiped her chin.
“And you didn’t have to clean my shoes,” I added. “You can stay even when you don’t help.”
“Even Teddy?”
“Especially Teddy. His work has been disappointing.”
She hugged him defensively. “He’s tired.”
“So am I.”
Zoe reached for my hand.
“Come see Mama.”
I let her lead me down the corridor. Through the open door, Hannah watched us approach. When her eyes met mine, she smiled for the first time without an apology attached.
