"She Polished My Shoes So I Wouldn’t Fire Her Mother" Chapter 6
Her Mother’s Letters
Hannah came to my study four days later carrying a blue folder.
She knocked despite the open door.
“Mrs. Bell has Zoe in the garden. I thought this might be a good time.”
I put down my phone.
“It is.”
Her color had returned. She wore jeans and a white blouse, and she had put on small gold earrings. I noticed all of it before I noticed the folder.
She sat across from me and opened it.
“My sister brought the letters. These are copies. I kept the originals with her.”
“That was sensible.”
“Mr. Hale called it suspicious.”
“Victor and I have developed different opinions.”
That earned a small smile.
The first letter was dated nineteen years earlier. Evelyn had asked about money promised to a groundskeeper’s widow. The next concerned a cook who had suffered an injury. There were polite follow-ups, then increasingly desperate ones.
The replies grew shorter.
I recognized Victor’s signature. I had seen it on documents since I was a child.
“My mother could be stubborn,” Hannah said. “If you told her something wasn’t her business, she generally took that as an invitation.”
“You sound proud of her.”
“I am. I also used to wish she’d stop arguing with people who could make things worse.”
She ran a finger over a photocopied crease.
“When she got sick, she wouldn’t tell me how frightened she was about the bills. She knew I was already struggling. She died still worrying about other people’s rent.”
I reached for the next page and stopped.
“Would you rather leave this with the attorney?”
“No. I want you to see it.”
So I did.
Among the letters was a photograph: my mother on the back terrace, laughing at something Evelyn had said. I was thirteen in the corner of the frame, scowling at the camera in a school blazer.
Hannah leaned forward.
“That’s you?”
“Unfortunately.”
“You look furious.”
“My father had made me cut my hair.”
She smiled properly this time.
“Was it very long?”
“Long enough to irritate him.”
“Then I’m surprised you cut it.”
“So was I.”
I looked at my mother’s face. I had forgotten that laugh. Not the sound, exactly, but the way it drew her whole body forward, as though she couldn’t bear to keep happiness to herself.
“She wanted people to have somewhere to go,” I said. “I remember her arguing about a cottage on the property. My father wanted it empty for guests.”
“Mine said she used to leave the kitchen door unlocked when someone needed help.”
“My father hated that.”
“What did you think?”
“I was thirteen. I thought about getting out.”
Hannah didn’t rush to reassure me.
After a while, she asked, “Did you?”
I looked around the study. His desk was gone. His portrait wasn’t. It hung opposite the door because I had never bothered to move it.

“Not as far as I thought.”
She followed my glance but said nothing.
I told her what the outside attorney, Rachel Mercer, had established. The fund had existed. It had held real money. Records held outside Victor’s office showed payments, then transfers that needed explaining.
“Your mother wasn’t inventing it.”
Hannah’s eyes closed.
For a moment she simply breathed.
Then she pressed her fingers against her mouth, and I left my chair without thinking. I stopped beside her, uncertain whether touching her would help.
She reached for my hand.
I let her hold it until her grip eased.
“I wish I could tell her,” she said.
“So do I.”
She looked up. We were too close for the room to feel like an office anymore.
I could have leaned down.
Instead I returned to my chair, because she had come to give me something difficult and I would not make her regret being vulnerable in front of me.
“There’s something you should know,” she said.
I waited.
“When I saw this position advertised, I recognized the address. The room and the pay were why I applied. But I thought about the letters, too.”
“You came looking for answers.”
“I hoped there might be one. I didn’t know about the danger. If I’d known, I would never have brought Zoe.”
I stared at the folder.
A familiar instinct rose: concealment meant threat. Every withheld detail was a reason to close a door.
“You should have told me.”
“Yes.” She swallowed. “But I didn’t know you. What I knew was that you could dismiss me without looking up from your phone.”
I remembered the corridor again. Her waiting face. My raised finger.
She wasn’t wrong.
“I don’t like surprises, Hannah.”
“Neither do I. I woke up to find my daughter covered in polish because she thought my job depended on it.”
The room went quiet.
I rubbed my hand across my mouth.
“All right.”
“All right?”
“You’ve told me now. I’m listening.”
Her shoulders eased, though not completely.
From the garden came a burst of laughter. Zoe was chasing Mrs. Bell with a watering can. Most of the water appeared to be landing on Zoe.
Hannah turned toward the window, smiling before she seemed to realize it.
I wanted to see that expression again. Somewhere that had nothing to do with my desk, her job, or the man threatening them.
Then she looked back.
“What if your father knew?”
The question stripped the warmth from the room.
I could see my own reflection in the glass behind her. Same dark eyes. Same square shoulders. A face strangers had been comparing to his for twenty years.
“Then I’ll find that out, too.”
“And afterward?”
“I won’t ask you to pretend he didn’t.”
Hannah held my gaze. Whatever she found there made her close the folder and leave it on my desk.
