"She Polished My Shoes So I Wouldn’t Fire Her Mother" Chapter 10
The Door I Closed
At five fifty-eight on Sunday, Claire opened the apartment door and looked me over.
“You’re taller than I expected.”
“Hannah has been giving inaccurate descriptions.”
“She said you were a pain in the ass. The height was unspecified.”
From the kitchen, Hannah said, “Claire.”
Her sister stepped aside.
“I’m deciding whether I like you.”
“Take your time.”
Zoe ran toward me, stopped to retrieve the bear she had dropped, then resumed at full speed.
I caught her under the arms.
“Did you bring the duck?”
“In my coat pocket.”
She patted both pockets until she found the book.
Hannah stood at the stove, looking at us. She wore an apron over a simple dress. There was flour near her elbow and something cautious in her smile.
I put Zoe down.
“Where do you want me?”
Hannah handed me a bowl.
“Washing lettuce.”
Claire sat at the table to watch. Apparently the trial had entered a practical phase.
Dinner was loud and ordinary. Zoe wanted her food separate. Claire disagreed with Hannah about whether their mother’s curtains had been yellow or cream. I washed dishes afterward while Hannah dried them beside me.
“You’re quiet,” she said.
“I’m trying to remember how this works.”
“Washing dishes?”
“Being invited somewhere.”
Her hand paused on a plate.
Then she bumped my shoulder lightly with hers.
“You can come again.”
I did.
Over the next three weeks, I learned that Zoe woke from naps angry if her socks had come off, that Hannah listened to old music while she cooked, and that Claire’s approval could be identified by the increasingly insulting nicknames she used for me.
Hannah took a temporary inventory position with a small hotel through a former colleague. When the arrangement was offered, she told me before accepting.
“I want to work somewhere that isn’t yours.”
“I understand.”
“I’d like us to have dinner after I’ve had a bad day without wondering whether I’m criticizing the boss.”
“You can criticize me independently.”
“I intend to.”
She signed the contract. We agreed that her housing support would continue on the terms already written down, separate from whether she dated me or worked for me. Eventually she wanted a lease of her own.
I wanted her in my house. I helped her review apartment listings anyway.
Meanwhile, Victor lost room to maneuver.
The man who had entered the office gave an account through his attorney. He had been hired to remove particular files during a planned security outage. Dante Romano, he had been told, would still be in New York.
The threat to Hannah was traced to another intermediary. Her statement, preserved messages, access records, and the financial trail were passed to investigators. Rachel handled the submissions and kept me informed without promising an outcome she couldn’t guarantee.
Victor requested a meeting.
I agreed to see him at Rachel’s office, with her present. Julian waited outside.

Victor looked older than he had in Hannah’s corridor. Still immaculate. Still carrying the briefcase I had seen beside my father’s desk for most of my life.
He placed it on the conference table.
“You’re dismantling your own family.”
I sat opposite him.
“You paid someone to break into my house.”
“That allegation will be contested.”
“By your lawyer. I’m talking to you.”
He glanced at Rachel. She did not help him.
For a moment, the only sound was the air-conditioning.
“Your father understood that those accounts served several purposes,” Victor said at last. “He approved the arrangements.”
“I’ve seen what he approved.”
“Then you know this is more complicated than a housekeeper’s grievances.”
“Her mother asked why people were being refused money they’d been promised. You answered by threatening her daughter twenty years later.”
His mouth tightened.
“You’ve become emotionally involved.”
“Yes.”
The admission seemed to disconcert him more than anger would have.
He opened the briefcase and removed a proposed settlement. Rachel did not touch it.
“There are reputations involved. Names you don’t want dragged into this. We can restore a substantial amount quietly, bring in fresh administrators, and put an end to unnecessary distress.”
“Whose distress?” I asked.
Victor leaned back.
“I stood beside you at your father’s funeral.”
“I remember.”
“I’ve protected you.”
“You protected your access to me.”
His eyes hardened.
“You think she’ll stay when she understands what you are?”
For the first time since the meeting began, I wanted to hurt him.
I kept my hands flat on the table.
“Whether Hannah stays is her decision.”
“Your father would be ashamed.”
Rachel shifted slightly, but I raised a hand.
“My father isn’t the person I’m trying to become.”
Victor stared at me.
I stood.
“Your proposal goes through counsel. You will not contact Hannah, her sister, or my household. Anything else you have to say can be said here.”
I left him at the table.
In the corridor, Julian fell into step beside me.
“You all right?”
“No.”
He nodded. “Fair enough.”
We drove back to the city in silence. I called Hannah before I went to the apartment.
“The meeting is over. Nothing has changed about your security arrangements. Rachel will update you directly.”
“How are you?”
I looked out at the darkening street.
“I’d rather see you than talk about him.”
“You can do both.”
“Are you sure?”
“Yes. Come upstairs.”
After Zoe went to bed, I told Hannah what Victor had said. Not every word. Enough.
She sat beside me and took my hand.
“He wanted to hurt you.”
“He knows where to press.”
“So do you.”
I turned toward her.
“You could have made him afraid of something worse than a lawyer,” she said. “You chose to leave.”
“He doesn’t get to decide what happens to the rest of my evening.”
Her mouth curved.
“What does?”
“This.”
I kissed her. Slowly, because I had somewhere to be that required no hurry.
When she drew back, she kept her hand against my neck.
“I want to keep seeing you,” she said. “I want my work, and time with Claire, and a home where Zoe doesn’t have to guess what happens next.”
“I want those things for you.”
“And what do you want?”
I looked at the three mugs drying beside the sink. At the duck book on the table. At the woman who had asked me a question and waited for an honest answer.
“I want you to call when something funny happens. I want to know when you’ve had a terrible day. I want to take Zoe to see a snail and know you’ll be there making fun of me.”
Hannah’s eyes shone.
“That sounds manageable.”
“I’m in love with you,” I said. “That part is less manageable.”
She laughed once, unsteadily, and pulled me back to her.
From the bedroom, Zoe called, “Mama?”
Hannah rested her forehead against mine.
“Hold that thought.”
She came back five minutes later, smiling.
“What did she need?”
“To know whether you’re coming tomorrow.”
“Am I invited?”
“Yes.”
“Tell her I can come at five. After her snack.”
Hannah sat beside me again.
“You can tell her yourself tomorrow,” she said. “I think she’ll like that.”
