"Collared by the Enemy Alpha King" Chapter 11 — The Collar He Chose
Ian left Nightfall the next morning.
Eric did not try to stop him.
That was why Ian returned.
Three weeks later, the throne hall looked nothing like the chamber where he had been sentenced. The betting balconies were closed. The claw blade had been melted. Representatives from Nightfall and Ironfang stood together beneath two banners instead of one.
At the center waited an empty double throne.
Ian entered wearing silver-gray battle armor over a black formal shirt. No collar covered his throat. The temporary bite had faded to a pale scar he had chosen not to hide.
The hall fell silent.
Eric waited at the dais in a black suit, silver hair brushed back, his face unreadable to everyone except Ian.
Through the unrestrained mate bond came shock, relief, and a love so intense Ian nearly stopped walking.
Leo sat on one throne’s arm wearing a small black suit, silver sneakers, and dark glasses he had found in Maya’s vehicle.
He lifted his milk bottle in greeting.
Ian reached the foot of the dais.
“You’re late,” Eric said.
“I crossed two mountain ranges to get here.”
“The ceremony began at noon.”
“Then you should have scheduled it for one.”
Leo leaned toward Maya. “They missed each other.”
Maya nodded. “Clearly.”
Ironfang’s new commander, Ian’s sister Mara, stepped forward with the treaty. It abolished captive-mate law, transferred border control to a joint council, and recognized Leo as heir to both bloodlines without placing him under either pack’s ownership.
Ian read the final clause.
“This names me royal consort.”
The old council shifted uneasily.
Eric looked at the document. “Silas’s title remained in the draft.”
“Then change it.”
“To what?”
Ian climbed the first step. “Equal sovereign.”
Whispers spread through the chamber.
An elder rose. “Nightfall has never had two kings.”
Ian looked at him. “Nightfall has never had me.”
Mara hid a smile.
The elder appealed to Eric. “Your Majesty, tradition—”
“Failed,” Eric said. “Publicly and repeatedly.”
He took the treaty from Ian and struck out the old title. In its place, he wrote CO-KING OF NORTHREACH.
Then he signed beneath it.
Mara signed for Ironfang.
Ian added his name last.
The two banners lowered together.
Eric lifted a black metal case from the altar. Inside lay two rings forged from the Sovereign Collar. Each held half of the moonstone, set into black silver without chain or lock.
Ian touched one. “You destroyed it.”
“I changed its purpose.”
“Still dramatic.”
“You came dressed for war to a coronation.”
“I contain multitudes.”
Eric stepped down.
Then, before both packs and every surviving council member, the wolf king went to one knee.
The hall stopped breathing.
Ian’s heart struck hard against his ribs.
Eric held up the ring.
“Four years ago, the Moonwell chose before either of us understood the choice. Two years ago, I kept you in my territory and called it protection. I will not make that mistake again.”

His pale eyes held Ian’s.
“My throne, my pack, and my life are yours. But you were never my prisoner.”
Ian glanced toward the assembled wolves. “You know I don’t kneel beside a king.”
“I know.”
“I stand beside one.”
Eric’s expression softened.
Ian held out his left hand.
Eric slid the ring onto it.
The moonstone warmed, but no chain appeared. The bond opened like a door, waiting rather than demanding.
Ian pulled Eric to his feet.
“My turn,” he said.
He took the second ring and placed it on Eric’s hand. Then he caught the back of Eric’s neck and kissed him in front of the entire court.
The kiss was not surrender.
It was challenge, promise, and choice.
Eric’s arms closed around his waist, careful despite the roar from both packs.
Ian broke the kiss and turned his head, exposing the place Eric had once bitten without permission.
“Now,” he said.
Eric went still. “Ian.”
“I know what I’m choosing.”
“There will be no easy way to break it.”
“Then give me a reason not to.”
Eric’s eyes turned red.
He bent slowly, giving Ian every chance to move. Ian tightened his hand in Eric’s hair and held him there.
The bite came with pain, heat, and a surge of shared power that shook the chandeliers. Ian’s own teeth found Eric’s shoulder. Their marks ignited together, equal and complete.
No one knelt from fear.
Both packs bowed by choice.
Leo applauded from the throne arm. “Good. Now stop fighting and build me a bigger room.”
Laughter broke through the formal hall.
Eric lifted his head. “You already have the largest room in the eastern wing.”
“It only has one door.”
“The renovations start tomorrow,” Ian said.
“And a slide.”
“No slide,” Eric replied.
The official celebration moved to the great dining room. Nightfall chefs served Ironfang dishes beside northern game, an act that would once have started a war over seasoning alone.
Ian sat at Eric’s right, not below him. Leo occupied the space between their chairs and stole food from both plates.
An elder approached Ian with the old consort’s cup. Ian examined the small silver vessel, then exchanged it for Eric’s larger black one.
“Tradition,” the elder protested.
“Failed,” Eric and Ian said together.
Leo laughed so hard milk came out his nose.
Later, Mara handed Ian the complete prison correspondence. Eric had written twenty-six requests for Ian’s release, each more threatening than the last. The final letter promised to dissolve the council by force.
“He was three days away from attacking his own government,” Mara said.
Ian watched Eric patiently clean milk from Leo’s formal jacket. “He moves slowly.”
“You love him.”
“I tolerate him with unusual commitment.”
Mara smiled. “That sounds hereditary.”
Across the room, Eric looked up as the bond carried Ian’s amusement. He did not demand an explanation. He simply held Ian’s gaze, secure enough now to let the moment remain private.
“And a slide.”
“No slide,” Eric replied.
Leo removed his dark glasses and looked at Ian.
“Daddy?”
Ian saw the calculation immediately.
“Fine. One slide.”
Eric stared at him. “We have been co-kings for less than two minutes, and you are already undermining me.”
Ian smiled. “You knew what you were choosing.”
That evening, they stood on the northern balcony while snow covered the mountains. Below them, Nightfall and Ironfang shared the same fires for the first time in generations.
Leo slept between his fathers beneath Eric’s coat, one hand still wrapped around his empty bottle.
Ian leaned against the stone rail.
“Do you regret opening the gate?”
Eric stood behind him, close but not trapping him. “No.”
“You thought I wouldn’t return.”
“I prepared for that possibility.”
“How?”
“Poorly.”
Ian laughed.
Eric pressed his mouth to the new mark, gentle now.
“What made you come back?”
Ian looked across the land that had once divided them.
“You finally stopped trying to keep me.”
Eric’s arms settled around him. Ian let them.
Below, two wolf packs raised their voices beneath the same moon.
The old collar was gone.
The bond remained.
And for the first time, it belonged equally to both of them.
Inside, Leo’s new room waited with two doors, one unnecessary slide, and enough windows to make hiding impossible. Ian had designed the locks so they opened from the child’s side. Eric had approved every change.
Their son would inherit power one day. He would not inherit a cage.
