"The Maid Who Made the Mafia Boss Stay" Chapter 10
The Chair Beside Her
Dinner became Saturday mornings and borrowed books, arguments over the temperature of Clara's apartment, and a toothbrush Bennett forgot to bring home.
Grief came with them.
Sometimes he went quiet in the middle of a good evening. Sometimes Clara cried after making toast. They learned to ask whether the other wanted company, and to believe the answer.
One night, Bennett arrived forty minutes late without calling.
Clara ate her dinner while he stood in the doorway explaining a meeting.
"Your phone works," she said.
He took it out, set an alarm for his next appointment, and apologized.
She made him reheat his own food.
He fell in love with her somewhere among those unremarkable evenings, though by the time he admitted it, the discovery felt overdue.
He told her in her kitchen while she was trying to open a jar.
She stopped struggling with the lid.
"You could have picked a moment when I looked less helpless."
"I've seen you break a man's composure over a laundry schedule. I wasn't confused."
She laughed, then put the jar down.
"I love you, too. I was wondering how long you'd keep looking at me like that without saying it."
He kissed her against the counter until she remembered the stove was on.
The rest of his life changed less easily.
Untangling the Hale businesses took years. Some men left. Others tried to persuade him that a few profitable arrangements could remain untouched. There were losses, threats, and nights when Marcus slept in a chair outside his office.
Bennett kept security. He stopped mistaking every precaution for a reason to shut the gates on everyone he loved.
Clara did not pretend to admire the parts of his history that frightened her. When she asked questions, he answered them. When the answers were difficult, they stayed at the table.
Richard eventually pleaded guilty to financial crimes arising from the stolen payment and other transactions uncovered during the review. Clara chose not to attend the hearing.
They went instead to the cemetery where Rose and Thomas Reed were buried.
Bennett stood a little way back while Clara arranged the flowers. Then she turned and held out her hand.
He came when she asked.
With her restitution secure, Clara began taking classes in nonprofit administration. She worked part-time at a family support organization and came home with stories about broken printers, impossible budgets, and a supervisor she liked enough to complain about.
When Bennett suggested establishing a fund in their parents' names, she made him attend meetings with people who knew how to run one.
The first project was modest: transport, meals, and temporary help for families caring for someone seriously ill. A qualified director managed the work. Clara joined the staff after finishing her program, then earned responsibilities she could explain without mentioning Bennett's name.
He was proud of her in a way that still caught him off guard.

They married two years after that first dinner by the lake.
Clara wore ivory. Marcus looked uncomfortable in formal clothes. Mrs. Alvarez cried before the ceremony began and denied it afterward.
At the reception, Bennett found Clara standing alone beside an open terrace door.
"You all right?"
She nodded, then shook her head.
"I wish they were here."
He stood beside her.
"My mother would have complained about the flowers."
"My mother would have taken some home."
"My father would have tried to give the officiant instructions."
Clara laughed through her tears.
"Mine would have told him to sit down."
Bennett kissed her temple.
They stayed there until the music changed, then went back inside together.
A year later, their daughter arrived with Clara's stubborn chin and a furious objection to being put down.
They named her Eleanor Rose.
On a rainy afternoon the following autumn, Bennett came home early and found the house unusually quiet.
He heard Clara before he saw her.
She was in the small sitting room overlooking the garden, reading aloud while their daughter slept against her shoulder. A mug of tea stood untouched beside the chair.
Bennett stopped in the doorway.
Clara looked up and smiled.
"You're early."
"I wanted to come home."
"Good. Take her before my arm falls off."
He crossed the room and lifted their daughter carefully. She stirred, pushed a small hand against his collar, and settled against his chest.
Clara flexed her fingers with a sigh.
On the table lay the poetry book from his mother's room. Between its pages, the old bookmark still held its place.
He touched it with one finger.
"I heard you reading."
"She likes the sound. She has strong opinions about my singing."
He smiled and lowered himself into the chair beside her.
Clara leaned against his shoulder, warm and comfortably heavy. Outside, rain began to darken the terrace stones.
His phone vibrated in his pocket.
He checked the screen, sent a brief reply, and put it away.
"Do you have to go?" Clara asked.
Bennett shifted the sleeping child higher against his chest and reached for the book.
"No," he said. "Read me the rest."
Clara found the line where she'd stopped.
He listened.
